Compare IT services companies by matching their reporting periods and measurement bases—not by sorting headline percentages. Start with revenue growth, separate reported from constant-currency and acquisition-supported growth, treat bookings as a demand signal rather than revenue, compare like-for-like operating margins, and judge guidance against the range originally issued for the same period and currency basis.

Start with periods and definitions that actually match

Before comparing figures, write down each company’s fiscal year, period end date, currency, and metric definition. A calendar-year result and a fiscal-year result may cover different economic periods. Likewise, “growth” may mean reported revenue growth, constant-currency growth, or organic growth that excludes acquisitions and divestitures.

  • Match the period: Compare the same quarter or full-year period where possible, and state the fiscal-year label and period end date.
  • Match the currency basis: Keep reported-currency growth separate from constant-currency or local-currency growth.
  • Separate organic and acquired growth: Identify acquisition contributions when the company discloses them; do not present reported growth as organic growth.
  • Use company filings for performance: Investor overview pages offer context, but detailed results and definitions belong in earnings releases and filings.

For example, Cognizant said its Belcan acquisition contributed approximately 260 basis points to revenue growth in 2025. That contribution is a reason to show reported growth and acquisition impact separately, rather than treating the headline rate as a purely organic comparison. Cognizant’s FY2025 results release.

Compare revenue growth on the same basis

Revenue is the clearest measure of recognized business over a reported period, but the percentage is useful only when its basis is clear. If two firms report different currencies or fiscal periods, their headline rates are not directly interchangeable. Show reported and constant-currency growth separately when both are available, then note disclosed acquisition or divestiture effects.

A useful comparison row includes the period, revenue, reported growth, constant-currency growth, and any disclosed acquisition contribution. If a company does not provide one of these measures, mark it as not stated rather than estimating it from another figure.

Bookings vs. revenue: use bookings as a demand signal

Revenue is recognized over a reporting period; bookings describe new business under a company-specific definition. Bookings can indicate demand, but they do not say how much revenue will be recognized next quarter or next year. Accenture states that bookings are “not comparable to, nor should [they] be substituted for, an analysis of our revenues over time.” Accenture’s FY2025 annual report.

Contract mix affects conversion. Accenture notes that managed-services bookings, typically multi-year contracts, generally convert to revenue over a longer period than consulting bookings. Contract duration, delivery schedule, renewals, delays, and cancellations can all affect timing; do not infer near-term revenue from a bookings figure alone.

What to check in a bookings comparison

  • The company’s definition of bookings and the time window being reported.
  • Whether the figure is quarterly, full-year, or trailing twelve months.
  • Growth against the same prior-year period.
  • Any disclosed large-deal thresholds, cancellations, or contract-mix details.
  • Whether the company explicitly warns against treating bookings as a substitute for revenue.

What does book-to-bill mean?

Book-to-bill compares bookings with revenue over a stated period, according to the company’s calculation. It can help show whether new business is running ahead of recognized revenue, but a ratio alone does not reveal contract length, implementation schedules, or whether booked work will be renewed, delayed, or cancelled. Confirm the reporting window and calculation before comparing ratios across companies.

As a company-reported example, Cognizant reported approximately 1.3x book-to-bill on a trailing-twelve-month basis for 2025, alongside $28.4 billion in trailing-twelve-month bookings, up 5% year over year. The time basis matters: this is not the same as a quarterly ratio. Cognizant’s FY2025 results release.

How to compare operating margins

Compare GAAP operating margin with GAAP operating margin, and adjusted margin with adjusted margin only after reviewing each company’s definition and adjustments. Accenture’s SEC-filed results define GAAP operating margin as operating income divided by revenue; adjusted margins are non-GAAP measures with their own definitions. Business mix and adjustment policies can make two adjusted percentages less comparable than they first appear. Accenture’s FY2026 SEC-filed results.

Keep the margin type visible in every table or chart. If adjustments are not described in the source used, say that the company’s definition applies and avoid implying that adjusted figures are standardized.

How to compare company guidance with results

Guidance is a dated range for a specified future period and measurement basis, not a promise. Record the original range, its issue date, fiscal period, and currency or growth basis. If the company later revises guidance, preserve both ranges and compare the eventual actual result with the relevant original and revised ranges separately.

  1. Capture the range when it is issued, including whether it is reported-currency or constant-currency growth.
  2. Record the fiscal period and date covered by that range.
  3. Track any later revision as a separate range instead of overwriting the original.
  4. When actual results arrive, compare them with the range on the same basis.

For illustration, Cognizant’s initial FY2026 revenue-growth guidance was 4.0% to 6.5% in constant currency. Accenture’s FY2026 results reported $74.18 billion in revenue, up 6% in U.S. dollars and 5% in local currency, above its guided range of 3% to 4% local-currency growth. These are examples of checking an actual against its stated basis, not a direct peer ranking: the companies’ fiscal periods and reported measures differ. Cognizant’s FY2026 guidance; Accenture’s FY2026 SEC-filed results.

A practical comparison checklist

  • Are the fiscal periods and period-end dates aligned?
  • Are currency, reported versus constant-currency growth, and organic versus acquisition-supported growth identified?
  • Are bookings definitions, time windows, and contract-mix caveats visible?
  • Is book-to-bill calculated over the same stated window?
  • Are GAAP and adjusted operating margins kept separate, with definitions checked?
  • Are guidance ranges dated and compared with results using the same basis?

These operating metrics help describe business performance; by themselves, they do not establish valuation, investment suitability, or future returns.
