A big “% off” badge does not prove an item is a bargain. To compare holiday sale prices, match the exact product, check what it costs elsewhere and over time, add every unavoidable charge, and weigh the seller’s reliability and return terms. Buy only when the product and its full cost work for you.
Start with the exact item you want
Before browsing sale pages, write down the product’s manufacturer and model number, plus the details that matter to you: size, color, storage capacity, configuration, or condition. Two products that look alike may differ in features or specifications, so a lower price on a different model is not a direct comparison. The FTC’s online-shopping guidance recommends noting item details when comparison shopping.
Include your must-have features and rule out extras you would not otherwise buy. A bundle or add-on can make a displayed price look attractive while increasing your actual cost.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCompare current prices and the price history
Check the exact item at a few reputable sellers. If a price-history record is available, use it to see whether today’s price is low relative to the item’s own observed prices. Price alerts can help you notice changes, but they do not establish that a product is worth buying or that every seller is trustworthy.

Be cautious with comparison-shopping sites: some may promote their own products or rank sellers when payment is involved. The FTC advises consumers to assess how such sites work rather than treating their results as an impartial verdict. See the FTC’s advice on online comparison shopping.
Do not take the crossed-out price at face value
A “regular,” “was,” or suggested retail price is a reference claim, not proof that the sale price is unusually good. The FTC says the same truthfulness standards apply to price comparisons and sale-price claims. Its guidance on advertising and price comparisons explains that principle; its advice on going-out-of-business sales notes that suggested retail prices may exceed what stores typically charge.

Recent findings illustrate why a markdown alone can mislead, but their scope matters. Consumers’ Checkbook tracked selected products at 25 U.S. national chains weekly for 24 weeks beginning in February 2025. In that study, 21 chains advertised sale prices more than half the time; the other 19 retailers’ tracked items were labeled “on sale” about 76% of the tracking period on average. Those results apply to the chains and items the organization selected, not to every retailer or product. In its November 13, 2025 press release, executive editor Kevin Brasler said: “Seeing 50 percent or 60 percent off a regular price doesn’t mean anything. The only way to make sure you’re getting the best deal is to shop around.” Consumers’ Checkbook’s release describes the study and its findings.

A separate, geographically limited example comes from the European Commission: its March 26, 2026 summary of an EU consumer-protection sweep of Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales reported that 34% of traders displayed price comparisons, and 60% of those did not clearly explain the reference price. These figures describe that EU sweep, not all retailers worldwide. See the Commission’s summary.

Calculate the full delivered cost
Compare the amount you will actually pay, not just the product’s headline price. Add shipping, handling, delivery, taxes, and other unavoidable fees. Check whether a coupon requires a minimum spend, a bundle, a subscription, or another condition, and include any required extras in the comparison. The FTC’s online-shopping guidance advises checking total costs and reading the full product description and deal conditions.
For each offer, make a quick side-by-side check:
- Exact model, configuration, size, and condition
- Current price at other sellers and, when available, the item’s price history
- Shipping, taxes, mandatory fees, and required add-ons
- Seller reliability and the possibility of counterfeit or misrepresented goods
- Return, refund, return-shipping, and price-match terms
Check the seller and the terms before paying
A low price is not a good deal if the seller does not deliver, the item is not as described, or you cannot return it on workable terms. Review the seller’s return and refund policy, the deadline, who pays return shipping, and whether sale or clearance items have different conditions. Also check any price-match or post-purchase adjustment policy; terms and availability can change, so confirm the current rules at checkout.

For an unfamiliar seller, search its name with terms such as “review,” “complaint,” or “scam.” Be especially cautious when an expensive product is offered at an implausibly low price. The FTC’s holiday-shopping scam guidance warns about scam sites, counterfeit-looking goods, non-delivery, extra charges, and return costs. Do not pay an online seller that insists on gift cards, wire transfer, payment apps, or cryptocurrency.
Use a simple buy-or-wait decision
- Write down your target. Record the exact product and model, required features, and acceptable condition before sale browsing.
- Check comparable offers. Compare a few reputable sellers for that exact item. Treat comparison-site rankings as leads, not endorsements.
- Check the reference price. Look at current competing prices and price history where available; do not use the percentage markdown as your evidence of value.
- Work out the total. Include mandatory charges and any conditions attached to coupons, bundles, or rebates.
- Read the seller’s terms. Confirm return and refund rules, including return shipping and any exceptions for sale items.
- Pause if anything is suspicious. Investigate an unfamiliar seller or unusually low price, and walk away if the seller demands an unsafe payment method.
- Keep a record if you buy. Save the listing, price, date, seller terms, and receipt in case the order or advertised terms are disputed.
A discount is useful only when the item’s features and condition suit your needs, the seller is credible, and the total cost and terms are acceptable. If one of those checks fails, the advertised saving is not enough reason to buy.
