Compare headphones against the sounds you need to block, the audio you enjoy, how they fit over time, and how long they last under the same settings you’ll use. No single specification or overall score can settle all four: fit can affect both comfort and noise cancellation, and battery life depends on whether active noise cancellation (ANC) is enabled.

How to compare headphones fairly

Start with your main use—such as commuting, travel, work, or everyday listening—and decide which trade-offs matter most. Then compare the same kinds of evidence for each candidate: ANC performance for relevant sounds, sound-profile information plus listening, sustained fit, and runtime under matching conditions. Avoid treating a general “best” score as decisive unless its weighting matches your priorities.

  • For noisy travel, pay particular attention to the noise you encounter and how well each model seals around your ears.
  • For music or speech, combine your own listening with sound-profile evidence rather than relying on a single specification.
  • For long sessions, prioritize an actual fit check over a comfort claim.
  • For fewer charging interruptions, compare runtimes using the same ANC setting and test conditions.

How to compare noise cancellation

ANC uses microphones and electronics to produce sound intended to counter external noise. Its effectiveness can differ by sound type: Sennheiser notes that higher-frequency sounds, including voices, are harder to cancel than some other noise. So, consider steady travel or room noise separately from conversations and other higher-pitched sounds. A generic ANC label does not show how well a headphone will handle the particular sounds around you.

Fit matters as well as the cancellation technology. A poor seal can undermine the result, and a headphone that does not fit you well may not perform as expected. Check that the earcups sit securely and comfortably during wear. See Sennheiser’s guidance on factors affecting ANC performance.

How to compare sound quality

Sound quality is not captured by one specification. Frequency range, for example, is not by itself a verdict on how music or speech will sound. Consider the headphone’s sound profile and how consistently it reproduces different frequencies, then listen for yourself if possible.

Use familiar music or speech when comparing models, since known material makes differences easier to notice. Independent measurements can help describe a sound profile, but your preferences still matter: a profile one listener enjoys may not suit another. How to compare comfort and fit

Comfort is individual, so do not assume that a model described as comfortable will suit your head and ears. Try each candidate for a realistic wearing period and notice pressure, contact with your ears, and whether the fit stays stable. Design also matters; Sony and Focal both advise considering fit and design when choosing headphones.

For a practical checklist, see Sony’s pre-purchase headphone checks and Focal’s headphone selection criteria. A brief try-on can reveal obvious pressure points, but sustained wear is a more useful check for longer listening sessions.

How to compare battery life

Match the settings before comparing runtimes: compare ANC-on claims with ANC-on claims, and ANC-off with ANC-off. Also check whether a figure is a manufacturer rating or an independently measured result. Those are different kinds of evidence, and test methods may vary; an independent test is most helpful when it compares candidates consistently.

Which? describes its headphone testing methods. When reading any runtime figure, check the conditions attached to it rather than treating it as a universal duration for every listening setup.

Make the trade-off that fits your use

Once you have comparable information, rank the four dimensions by your needs instead of collapsing them into an unexplained total. A frequent traveler might give more weight to cancellation of steady environmental noise and ANC-on runtime; someone who listens for hours at a desk may put fit first. If two headphones are close, your listening preference or the more dependable fit can be the deciding factor.
