Compare each company first with businesses in the same sector, using the same reporting periods; only then compare valuation and risk. HDFC Bank, HCL Technologies and Max Healthcare have different operating economics, so a single cross-sector ratio cannot tell you which is the better business or investment. Also verify the index membership and share-price date you are using: a company’s index weight, or an index-level valuation, is not its company valuation.

Start with the index snapshot and the comparison date

The Nifty 50 is a 50-stock, free-float market-capitalization-weighted index, according to NSE Indices. It is useful as a benchmark and context for the Indian equity market, but it is not a ready-made list of direct peers. NSE Indices said the index represented about 53.73% of NSE-listed free-float market capitalization as of March 30, 2026. Constituents and weights can change; the index is reviewed semi-annually, with ad-hoc reconstitution possible in specified circumstances under its methodology.

Keep the date attached to any constituent or weight you cite. For example, the NSE Indices constituent snapshot dated February 27, 2026, showed HDFC Bank at 11.83% and HCL Technologies at 1.28% of the Nifty 50. Those are historical weights for that snapshot, not current weights. Max Healthcare’s 6.14% weight in the NSE Indices Nifty500 Healthcare factsheet dated April 30, 2026, is a weight in that healthcare sector index—not evidence of a Nifty 50 weight.

Compare each company with the right peers

Sector is the first filter because a bank, a technology-services company and a hospital operator earn revenue, use capital and manage risk differently. The metrics below are questions to take to company filings, not a claim that every company reports each measure in the same way. Check each issuer’s definitions before comparing figures.

Company Business context Useful operating comparisons
HDFC Bank Financial services Loan and deposit growth; funding mix; asset quality; credit costs; profitability; capital strength.
HCL Technologies (HCLTech) Information technology Constant-currency revenue growth; margins; services and products mix; client demand; cash generation; management outlook.
Max Healthcare Healthcare Operating and planned capacity; occupancy and utilization where reported; revenue and profitability trends; expansion commitments; leverage; cash generation.

Choose a peer group with comparable business models, not just a similar company name or a shared index. For example, a bank’s asset quality and funding mix do not have direct equivalents in an IT company’s service mix or a hospital operator’s capacity and utilization. A cross-sector table can organize the questions, but it should not make unlike measures look interchangeable.

Read results on matched periods and definitions

Before comparing growth or margins, record the fiscal period, whether the figures are consolidated or standalone, the currency, and the company’s definition of the measure. Do not line up one company’s latest quarter against another’s full year and call the difference a performance ranking. If a measure is not disclosed or definitions differ materially, mark that limitation rather than filling the gap with an estimate.

Use the latest issuer documents

  • HDFC Bank’s investor-relations materials list Q1 FY2027 results, earnings-call materials and a presentation dated July 2026; its annual-reports page lists the FY2025-26 integrated report.
  • HCLTech’s investor materials link to the FY2025-26 annual report. Its investor-relations page reports consolidated revenue of $14.8 billion for the 12 months ending June 2026; retain that stated currency and period if using the figure.
  • Max Healthcare’s investor page lists FY2025-26 integrated annual reports, while its stock-exchange submissions include FY2025-26 results, earnings presentations and related disclosures.

Use the latest results for near-term performance, then read the annual report’s management discussion, risk factors, accounting notes, capital-allocation disclosures and governance information for context. Treat management guidance as an expectation, not a realized result.

Assess resilience and company-specific risks

Do not reduce resilience to a single ratio across these sectors. For a bank, examine credit quality, funding and capital alongside growth. For an IT company, consider client demand, margins and cash generation as well as revenue. For a hospital operator, look at existing and planned capacity, utilization where reported, expansion commitments and leverage. In each case, read the issuer’s stated risks and assumptions and consider whether recent performance depends on conditions management describes as temporary or uncertain.

Accounting choices and company-specific definitions can also affect reported comparisons. Check notes to the accounts and the basis of presentation before treating a difference in a headline metric as an economic difference. Use the company’s disclosures to identify what is comparable and what is not.

Compare valuation only after aligning price and financial data

A valuation multiple needs a dated share price and a clearly identified financial period. Use the same price observation date across the companies being compared, and state whether the earnings or book-value measure is trailing, reported for a fiscal year, or another specified period. Compare companies with relevant sector peers and, where useful, their own history; a ratio alone does not establish that a stock is cheap or expensive.

The NSE Indices factsheet dated May 29, 2026, reported Nifty 50 index-level P/E of 20.27, P/B of 3.21 and dividend yield of 1.35%. These figures describe the index at that date. They are not individual-company multiples, do not establish the valuation of HDFC Bank, HCLTech or Max Healthcare, and are not a forecast.

There is no synchronized set of company operating and valuation figures here for all three issuers. Avoid a three-company valuation league table built from mismatched reporting periods, accounting definitions or stale share prices. Calculate company-level multiples only after collecting aligned financial data and a common share-price date, and label the inputs and method.

Distinguish company performance from investment returns

If you compare share performance, specify the start and end dates and whether the result is a price return or a total return that includes distributions. Keep that calculation separate from operating performance: a strong business result and a share-price return answer different questions. Benchmark comparisons should use the same interval and return convention.

NSE Indices describes the Nifty 50 as usable for portfolio benchmarking and as the basis for index funds, ETFs and structured products. That provides context for readers comparing individual-stock research with diversified index exposure; it does not determine which approach suits a particular investor.

A practical comparison sequence

  1. Set the scope: record the date of the Nifty 50 constituent list and decide whether you are comparing current members or a historical group.
  2. Choose sector peers: compare HDFC Bank with banks, HCLTech with relevant IT-services businesses, and Max Healthcare with healthcare operators before drawing cross-sector conclusions.
  3. Collect matched filings: use each issuer’s latest results, investor presentation and annual report; note the period, consolidation basis, currency and definitions for each metric.
  4. Review operations and resilience: assess the business-specific drivers in the sector table, then read risk factors, accounting notes, capital allocation and governance disclosures.
  5. Align valuation inputs: use a common share-price date and comparable financial periods; state the multiple and its inputs rather than relying on an index statistic.
  6. State the limits of the conclusion: separate operating quality, valuation and share returns, and identify any data that is not comparable or not disclosed.
