To find out whether ALDI or Walmart costs less for your groceries, compare the same planned basket at the nearby locations you can actually shop. Match products and package sizes where possible, compare unit prices for different sizes, and total the basket using the same shopping method at both stores. Include pickup or delivery charges and account for weighted items before deciding.
Why there is no universal cheaper-store answer
Prices depend on where you shop, which products are available, and whether you buy in-store, pick up, or have groceries delivered. ALDI says prices may fluctuate by location and fulfillment method in its pickup FAQ. Walmart says local operating costs, supply, shipping logistics, competition, and clearance can contribute to differences between store prices in its price-match information.
Online listings are not guaranteed shelf prices. ALDI’s terms of use allow online and physical-store prices to vary. Instacart also says retailers set marketplace item prices, which can differ from in-store prices; some in-store promotions may not apply there. See Instacart’s pricing information. Check local prices close to your shopping date.
Build a basket you can compare
Write down what you actually plan to buy
Make one list for both stores. For each item, note the product or brand you want, package size, and number of packages. That prevents a comparison from changing simply because one cart contains more food or a different product.

Separate exact matches from alternatives
Match the same item when it is available at both stores. If you compare a store brand at one retailer with a national brand at the other, label that as an alternative rather than an identical product. The comparison can still help with a shopping decision, but it does not establish which retailer charges less for the same item.
Compare package sizes using unit prices
When package quantities differ, convert prices to a shared unit before comparing. Divide the package price by its net ounces, pounds, or count; use the same unit for both products. For example, a 16-ounce package priced at $4.00 costs $0.25 per ounce. Compare that rate with the other package’s price per ounce, not just its shelf price.

Use a unit that makes sense for the product, and keep it consistent across the two options. A lower unit price does not by itself mean the basket will cost less if you need different quantities or buy a different number of packages.

Record local prices and keep the shopping basis consistent
Check the ALDI and Walmart locations that serve you, and note the date and price for each item. Record whether the price is an in-store shelf price, pickup listing, or delivery listing. Compare in-store with in-store, pickup with pickup, or delivery with delivery where possible. If you use different methods, label the difference rather than presenting the totals as a like-for-like comparison.

For an online comparison, use the selected location and fulfillment method at each retailer. Listings may change, and a price shown online may not be the price on a store shelf. Availability, substitutions, promotions, and fees can also affect the final order.
Add up the basket and the real fulfillment cost
Calculate the product subtotal for the quantities on your list, then show additional costs separately. For pickup or delivery, compare the checkout totals for the same fulfillment type and include applicable fees, bag charges, and discounts. ALDI’s online shopping FAQ says delivery fees vary, service fees apply, pickup fees start at $1.99, and online orders have minimums; bag charges may also apply. Check checkout for the selected location and time because charges and eligibility can vary.

Produce, meat, and other items priced by weight may not have a final cost until the order is fulfilled. ALDI’s terms note that pound-priced cart amounts may be estimates, and Instacart says actual weights and final prices can vary for weighed items. Keep those amounts provisional when comparing online carts, and use the final checkout or fulfillment amount when available. Note any substitutions that change the product or quantity.

Use a simple comparison table
A paper list or spreadsheet is enough. Record the same details for both stores so you can see whether a difference comes from the item, package size, shopping method, or fees.

Decide whether the difference is worth another stop
If the totals are close, consider travel cost, convenience, whether everything is available, and the value of making a second stop. These are household decision factors, not measured savings. A comparison is most useful when it reflects the items you will buy and the way you will actually get them.
What ALDI’s reported savings figure does—and does not—show
In a 2025 press release summarizing its Price Leadership Report, ALDI claimed $8.3 billion in shopper savings. That is ALDI’s company-reported aggregate claim, not an independent comparison of your local basket against Walmart’s prices. It cannot determine which store will cost less for your list.

Can Walmart match an ALDI price?
Walmart’s published U.S. price-match policy does not match competitor prices. It describes a conditional match for an identical item advertised on Walmart.com at a U.S. store, subject to exclusions. It therefore cannot be used to have Walmart match an ALDI shelf price. Check Walmart’s policy for its conditions.
