Compare grocery prices by dividing each package’s price by its quantity, then use the same unit for every item. To spend less overall, also compare usable servings, check only promotions you can redeem, and buy amounts your household can store and use.
How to compare grocery prices fairly
Start with the shelf price and package quantity:
Unit price = total package price ÷ package quantity
Use a shared unit such as dollars per ounce or dollars per pound. Convert units before comparing: a price per pound and a price per ounce are not directly comparable. USDA MyPlate summarizes the calculation as “TOTAL PRICE ÷ SIZE = UNIT PRICE” in its Shop Smart guidance.

Example: different package sizes
If a 12-ounce bag costs $3, its unit price is $0.25 per ounce. If a 20-ounce bag costs $4.40, its unit price is $0.22 per ounce. The larger bag costs less per ounce, but that does not settle whether it is the better purchase: consider whether you can use and store all of it.

Compare like with like
Check package size, ingredients or product form, and the basis used for the shelf label. Fresh, canned, frozen, prepared, and bulk foods may not deliver the same amount of edible food or the same number of servings. A sale price is relevant only if you qualify for its conditions, such as a coupon or loyalty-card offer.
Look beyond the package price
For products with different trimming, draining, preparation, or storage needs, compare the cost of usable food or realistic servings—not just the cost per pound. A low package price can be less useful if much of the purchase is discarded or the item takes more effort or storage than your household can manage.

USDA’s green-bean example
The USDA Food and Nutrition Service’s Food Buying Guide illustrates how purchase quantities can be translated into cost per serving. In its example, estimated raw costs are $0.30 per pound for fresh green beans, $0.24 per pound for canned, and $0.86 per pound for frozen; the guide calculates estimated raw cost per serving as $0.027, $0.034, and $0.074, respectively. These are illustrative figures from the guide, not current market prices or a universal ranking. The guide also notes that its raw-food-cost example excludes labor and storage costs.

Use a practical comparison checklist
- Price basis: Compare per ounce, pound, quart, or another common unit.
- Product form: Check whether items are fresh, frozen, canned, prepared, or bulk, and whether their measures are comparable.
- Usable yield: Account for edible portions, drained weight, trimming, and servings produced.
- Effort and storage: Consider preparation, equipment, available space, and whether you can use the amount before it spoils.
- Final basket price: Apply a sale or coupon only when you can actually redeem it.
Price and nutrition are separate considerations: the lowest unit price does not by itself tell you which item best fits your household’s dietary needs.

Build price comparison into a lower-cost shopping routine
USDA’s Healthy Eating on a Budget guidance recommends taking 15–20 minutes each week to plan meals and make a list of what and how much to buy. It also advises checking sales, coupons, specials, and loyalty cards, comparing unit prices, preparing food ahead, and freezing leftovers. A list can help you avoid impulse purchases, particularly when you are rushed or hungry.
- Check what you already have. Look through the pantry, refrigerator, and freezer before planning so you do not buy duplicates.
- Choose meals and quantities. Plan meals and snacks, favoring ways to use ingredients across more than one dish. Write down amounts, not just item names.
- Compare regular unit prices, then check current offers. For recurring staples, note the usual price per shared unit and compare it with the sale price. Read offer conditions before counting a discount.
- Buy larger amounts only when they fit your household. Consider storage space, usable servings, and whether you can finish the food in time.
- Prepare or freeze what you planned. Portioning food or freezing leftovers can help turn a planned purchase into meals rather than waste.
- Review receipts occasionally. Look for recurring items that account for a noticeable part of your total and compare them on your next trip.
A phone calculator is enough to divide price by package size when a shelf label is missing or uses a different unit; a dedicated calculator is not necessary. Your receipt total will still vary with household size, location, diet, store availability, and the meals you choose.
