Search a fuel-price app or website using your current location or ZIP code, then compare the same fuel grade your vehicle requires. Before choosing a station, check whether the displayed price depends on cash, membership, or rewards eligibility—and weigh any savings against the extra distance and route. Treat a listing as a lead, not a guarantee: confirm the price at the station before making a special detour.
Compare the price you can actually pay
- Choose the correct fuel grade. Compare like with like, such as regular with regular. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says regular octane is recommended for most cars and advises checking the owner’s manual for the right octane: FTC guidance on saving money on gas.
- Check the conditions behind the listing. A station may show a cash price, while another price may require a membership or a particular reward. GasBuddy documents a cash-price display for some U.S. stations, and AAA lists member discounts. Count only a discount you qualify for and can use.
- Compare price per unit and account for the trip. Sort nearby stations by price, then consider distance, route inconvenience, station access, and the time needed to reach the pump. A small per-gallon saving can be outweighed by a longer drive; the lowest displayed number is not automatically the cheapest practical stop.
For a fuel-rewards card or program, check fees, eligibility, and other conditions before counting the advertised benefit as savings. The FTC cautions consumers to read the fine print.
Ways to find prices near you
These services cover different markets and rely on different price systems. Their published features do not establish a universal best app or a reliable accuracy ranking.

Check whether a low price is still current
Price listings can lag behind a pump change or contain an error. GasBuddy accepts user reports, while Waze explicitly warns that third-party data is unverified and may be outdated. Even where a reporting deadline applies, such as the UK Fuel Finder’s 30-minute update rule, confirm the station’s sign or pump price before driving farther for a deal.

In the UK, consumers can report inaccurate Fuel Finder information, including a difference between the advertised and charged price. The report process asks for the station or location, the date and time observed, and a description of the problem.
Use the right comparison for your fuel
Price per gallon or litre is not the whole cost if the fuel grades differ. Check the owner’s manual before selecting a grade, and do not compare a price for fuel your vehicle does not require with one it can use. AAA’s explanation of E85 notes that it has approximately 25 percent fewer BTUs per volume than conventional gasoline, citing the U.S. Energy Information Administration. That is an energy-content comparison—not a retail-price comparison or a guaranteed fuel-economy result. See AAA’s fuel-price information.
