Compare South African data centers at the facility and contract level—not by brand name alone. Identify the metro and exact campus you need, then verify the proposed service’s uptime terms, facility-specific network options, support commitments, and evidence in writing. Provider-published percentages and connectivity counts can help build a shortlist, but they do not establish equivalent contractual protection or measured performance.
Start with the exact location and facility
Choose the metro based on latency, site access, regulatory needs, disaster recovery design, and operational requirements. Then confirm the precise campus and facility in the proposal: a provider’s presence in Johannesburg, Cape Town, or Durban does not establish that every service or network option is available at every site.
Teraco publicly lists data centers in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban. Its Johannesburg facilities include the Isando and Bredell campuses. Teraco describes Isando as a connectivity and interconnection hub serving local and African markets; that is the provider’s characterization, not an independent performance finding. See Teraco’s Johannesburg data centre information.
Teraco’s Cape Town facilities page lists CT1 in Rondebosch and CT2 in Brackenfell. Confirm which facility would host the proposed service and whether it meets your application’s latency, access, and recovery requirements. See Teraco’s Cape Town data centre information.

Compare uptime commitments by contract scope
Do not treat a headline percentage as a complete availability comparison. Ask what the guarantee covers—such as power, cooling, the facility, or a specific service—and how the provider measures availability. Review the measurement interval, planned-maintenance treatment, exclusions, claim deadline, evidence requirements, service-credit calculation, and escalation route in the applicable SLA and service schedule.
| Provider and facility information | Publicly stated uptime figure | Other published information |
|---|---|---|
| Teraco, Isando, Johannesburg | 99.999% uptime, listed on Teraco’s facility page; confirm applicability to the proposed service and contract. Source | More than 285 network service providers, more than 16,000 cross-connects, and direct NAPAfrica access, according to Teraco’s page. These are provider-published figures, not a guarantee of availability for a particular buyer. |
| Teraco, Cape Town facilities | 99.999% uptime, listed on Teraco’s facility page; confirm applicability to the proposed service and contract. Source | More than 100 network service providers, according to Teraco’s page. Verify options at the specific facility. |
| Equinix, Johannesburg data centers | Guaranteed 99.9999%+ uptime, advertised on Equinix’s Johannesburg page; the public page alone does not establish the contract’s covered service, exclusions, or remedies. Source | The page lists ISO 22301, ISO 27001, ISO 9001, PCI DSS, SOC 1 Type II, and SOC 2 Type II. Confirm certification scope and applicability to the contracting entity, site, and service. |
These figures are provider-published commitments or facility claims, not independently measured uptime results. A DBSA-hosted 2025 investment study identifies Teraco, Africa Data Centres, Equinix, OADC, and NTT Data as South Africa’s top five operators. It estimates that they account for 90% of overall IT load capacity, more than 80% of estimated occupancy, and 90% of rack capacity. Those estimates describe market concentration, not service quality or a recommendation for a particular workload. Read the DBSA-hosted 2025 study.

Verify connectivity at the proposed facility
A large carrier count or cross-connect total is a useful screening signal, but it cannot tell you whether your required carrier, cloud connection, or resilient route is available on suitable terms. Request a facility-specific network inventory and confirm availability, lead times, and charges in writing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Named networks and services: Ask which carriers and cloud connections can be ordered in the exact facility, and whether the required port types and capacities are available.
- Route diversity: Ask providers to explain whether diverse circuits use physically distinct routes end to end, including building entry paths and upstream infrastructure. Separate circuit names alone do not demonstrate diversity.
- Interconnection: Confirm cross-connect installation lead time, one-time and recurring charges, available ports, Internet exchange access, and cloud on-ramp terms. Teraco lists direct NAPAfrica access for Isando; verify the service and commercial details for your deployment.
- Application fit: Test the proposed network design against latency, throughput, failover, and geographic recovery requirements rather than relying on an ecosystem count.
Make support commitments measurable
Ask for support terms by incident severity, not only a general statement that support is available around the clock. Teraco’s support information says its team provides round-the-clock service and that response times are governed by the SLA. Request the applicable service schedule and confirm the actual targets for your service. See Teraco’s connectivity and support information.

- What are the acknowledgement and restoration targets for each severity level, and when does the clock start?
- Is support staffed 24/7, including weekends and public holidays, for the specific service being quoted?
- Which remote-hands tasks are included, what is billable, and how are urgent requests handled?
- Who owns escalation, how can incidents be escalated after hours, and when will you receive a root-cause report?
Check evidence, scope, and governance
Request current certifications and audit evidence, plus their scope: the relevant legal entity, site, and service should match what you are buying. Ask for operating procedures and incident history where available. A certification list or provider statement is useful evidence to examine, but does not by itself establish that a particular service meets your availability, security, or recovery requirements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a like-for-like request for proposal
Send each shortlisted provider the same requirements and ask for written answers tied to the proposed facility. Include the workload’s metro and campus needs, capacity and connectivity requirements, target availability, recovery design, support coverage, and access expectations. Require each response to identify the applicable SLA and service schedule, costs and lead times for network connections, support targets, exclusions, and service-credit process.
