Compare broadband deals by the total you will pay over the full minimum term, the speeds available at your address, and the contract terms—not by the opening monthly price alone. Add every scheduled monthly payment and compulsory upfront fee; show vouchers or cashback separately so they do not hide the amount you must commit to pay.
How to compare broadband deals fairly
Use the same checklist and calculation for every offer available at your postcode. Record the provider, package and technology, then compare the contract total, speed, term and inclusions. Offers and availability change, so check current postcode availability and terms before signing. Ofcom recommends consulting accredited comparison sites and reading both the contract summary and detailed contract information.
- Check availability at your address. Note the technology and package offered; a deal or speed shown for another location may not be available on your line.
- Write down the complete price schedule. Record each monthly price, the dates or periods when it applies, when billing starts, and any compulsory setup, activation, delivery or installation charges.
- Calculate the full-term cost before rewards. Multiply each monthly price by the number of months it applies, add the periods together, then add compulsory one-off charges.
- List rewards separately. Record a voucher or cashback and any claim conditions. If you can use and successfully claim it, show an after-reward total as a second figure—not as a replacement for the gross commitment.
- Compare speed and contract exposure. Check expected upload and download speeds, minimum term, early termination charges, and moving-home or switching conditions.
- Check what the price buys. Note equipment, calls or landline, TV, add-ons, usage limits, support and repair arrangements, and any charges for non-standard payment methods.
For a quick scan, you can divide the full-term cost by the number of months to calculate an equivalent monthly cost. Keep the full total and price schedule beside it: an average can conceal when payments rise, a large end-of-term price, or a reward that is conditional.
What is the total cost over the contract?
The total cost is the sum of all payments you are required to make during the minimum term, including scheduled price changes and compulsory upfront charges. Advertising rules call for compulsory upfront and ongoing costs, along with contract length, to be presented clearly together.

For example, if an offer charges one monthly amount for an initial period and a different amount later, calculate each period separately rather than multiplying the introductory price by the entire term. Add required setup charges only once. Keep optional extras separate unless you intend to buy them.

What speed will I actually get at my address?
Ask the provider for the expected speeds for your specific address or line. Compare download and upload speeds, and identify whether each figure is advertised, normally available, maximum, or a minimum commitment. These labels describe different things; a headline advertised speed alone is not a complete comparison.

Ofcom says fixed broadband information should clearly explain minimum, normally available, maximum and advertised speeds for both download and upload. Record the offered figures and compare packages on the same basis. A faster headline figure may not be the most useful option if the expected upload speed, technology, price or contract terms do not suit your household.

How do price rises affect a broadband deal?
For contracts entered into from 17 January 2025, an in-contract price rise written into the contract must be stated clearly in pounds and pence, with the date it applies, before you sign. Do not assume a scheduled rise automatically gives you the right to leave without an exit charge if the rise was made clear when you agreed to the contract.
Contracts made before 17 January 2025 may still include older inflation-linked or percentage-based increases. Read the terms that apply to your own contract rather than assuming the newer rules changed an existing agreement.

The UK Telecoms Consumer Charter records providers’ commitment that April 2026 would be the final inflation-linked increase for legacy consumer core subscriptions, followed by a clearer pounds-and-pence system. For a legacy contract, check the actual provider notice and contract terms that apply to you.
Ofcom reported that announced 2026 in-contract increases for fixed broadband ranged from £2 to £4. It said there was not yet enough evidence to draw firm conclusions about the effect of the new compliant tariffs on overall bills or customer engagement, so this range should not be treated as a forecast for every customer or provider.

How do contract length and exit charges change the comparison?
Record the minimum term and the consequences of leaving early. Residential service contracts should be no longer than 24 months. Ofcom warns that early termination charges may be substantial and says they should not exceed the payments remaining on the contract.
Consider whether you might move or switch before the minimum term ends. Check the applicable moving-home and switching conditions in the contract rather than assuming the service can be transferred or cancelled without cost.
What else should you check before signing?
- Included services and equipment: Confirm whether a router, landline or calls, TV, or other add-ons are included, and whether any item is optional or charged separately.
- Usage and payment conditions: Look for usage limits, non-standard payment fees and any other conditions that could change what you pay.
- Faults, repairs and compensation: Check how to report a fault, what repair arrangements apply and whether compensation provisions are included.
- Contract documents: Read the contract summary and detailed contract information so the price schedule, term, included service and exit conditions match your comparison.
A simple comparison table to fill in
Use one row per offer and the same cost method throughout. Fill it with current, address-specific information from the provider or comparison service.

The better shortlist is the one that fits your address, likely usage and tolerance for commitment—not a universal winner. Compare the gross contract total first, then decide whether the speed and included services justify the price and whether the term works for you.
