Compare three separate signals, not one headline number: GAAP revenue already recognized under the company’s accounting policy, the issuer-defined recurring-revenue measure (usually ARR), and cash generated by operations after considering capital spending. A company can report rapidly rising ARR while recognized revenue lags, or show strong revenue growth while operating cash flow weakens because customers have not paid yet.
Start with the latest 10-K or 10-Q, write down each metric’s definition and date, then test whether operating cash flow and the company’s free-cash-flow calculation support the growth story. ARR is not GAAP revenue annualized, is not standardized between issuers, and is not a guarantee of renewal.
Why revenue, ARR and cash flow tell different stories
Financial statements answer “How much revenue did the company recognize during this reporting period?” A recurring-revenue metric answers a different question: “What annualized amount does management associate with contracts or subscriptions active at a particular date?” The cash-flow statement answers “How much cash did operations actually generate during the period?”

Those questions use different dates and rules. Invoices may be issued before a service is delivered, while accounting rules may require revenue to be recognized over the contract term. Customers may pay late, pay in advance, or sign a multi-year commitment that is recognized gradually. Capitalized software, lease payments and restructuring can also change a company-defined free-cash-flow figure without changing GAAP revenue.

Keep the measures in separate columns in your analysis. Do not add ARR to revenue, replace revenue with ARR, or treat free cash flow as a standardized accounting subtotal.
Step 1: Establish what “revenue” means
Use the income statement for the reported period
Take total revenue from the latest income statement and record the exact period, currency, accounting basis and comparative period. A fiscal year ending January 31, for example, is not directly comparable with a calendar-year company unless you align the periods or clearly disclose the difference. Note whether management presents reported or constant-currency growth.
Then open the revenue-recognition note. It explains when the company considers a performance obligation satisfied and whether revenue is recognized at a point in time or over time. This accounting policy, rather than an investor presentation label, determines GAAP revenue.

AI companies can combine SaaS subscriptions, usage-based inference, implementation, consulting, hardware, licensing and support. Extract the line-item mix when the filing provides it. Revenue associated with an AI product is not automatically recurring subscription revenue. Usage may recur but fluctuate with customer activity; a one-time implementation project is not recurring even if it supports a subscription.
Check billing against recognition timing
UiPath’s fiscal 2025 filing illustrates the issue. Certain term-based on-premises subscription licenses are generally recognized when the customer can use and benefit from the software, while SaaS and maintenance revenue is recognized ratably over the contract. UiPath’s ARR is based on annualized invoiced amounts, so the ARR date and the GAAP-revenue recognition schedule can differ.

When reviewing an AI company, record contract start dates, invoice dates and the stated recognition pattern if management discloses them. A jump in billings can precede recognized revenue; a large deferred-revenue balance can indicate that cash was collected before revenue was recognized, but it does not by itself prove durable demand.
Step 2: Read the ARR or run-rate definition line by line
ARR is an issuer-defined operating metric. Copy the definition from the filing or earnings material and attach it to the number in your notes. The label alone is not enough because companies can include different contracts, products and assumptions.
Questions to answer in the definition
- What contracts count? Determine whether the metric includes only active, binding contracts, signed orders that have not started, usage commitments, term licenses, support, services or hardware.
- What duration is eligible? Check treatment of monthly auto-renewals, short-term agreements and contracts with no fixed end date.
- How is the amount annualized? A company may annualize a monthly invoice, an annual contract value, a per-SKU invoiced amount or another base.
- Are renewals assumed? A point-in-time run rate can omit future cancellations, downgrades and non-renewals unless the definition adjusts for them.
- How are consumption products handled? Find out whether the calculation uses committed minimums, recent usage, a forecast or another convention.
- What is excluded? Look for exclusions of life-of-device contracts, professional services, one-time fees, hardware or contracts not yet in service.
- How are currency and pricing changes handled? Note constant-currency presentation, foreign-exchange translation, price increases and credits.
- Did the methodology change? Identify a new definition, a recast of historical periods or a change in the population of customers included.
What the issuer examples show
UiPath describes ARR as annualized invoiced amounts by solution SKU and states that ARR is not a forecast of future revenue. Samsara defines ARR using annual contract value for subscription contracts in effect at period-end, excludes life-of-device contracts, and says ARR is not GAAP revenue annualized or a forecast. A separate SEC-filed issuer example includes certain short-term contracts and explains that annualizing them can place more into ARR than the contracts’ total value at period-end.
These definitions cannot be merged into a single industry-wide ARR standard. A higher ARR may reflect broader contract inclusion or a different annualization rule rather than stronger economics.
Step 3: Compare companies on a like-for-like basis
Align dates, periods and currency
Use the same period length and a consistent currency basis. Compare fiscal-year revenue with fiscal-year revenue, or quarter with quarter. If one company reports constant-currency growth and the other reports reported growth, keep those series separate. Preserve the measurement date for ARR; an ARR balance at January 31 is a snapshot and should not be compared casually with a June 30 snapshot.

Put definitions beside the numbers
For every company, show the ARR definition, included products, contract population and annualization method next to the value. If a definition is unavailable, mark the comparison as incomplete rather than treating identical labels as equivalent.

Net retention, gross retention, renewal rates and expansion can indicate whether recurring contracts are durable. Verify each company’s definitions: some measures include expansion and price increases, while others exclude customers below a size threshold or use a different cohort date. Retention statistics do not turn ARR into recognized revenue, but they help test whether the active-contract base is likely to persist.
Step 4: Test whether growth converts into cash
Start with operating cash flow
Read “net cash provided by operating activities” in the cash-flow statement and compare it with the prior period. Operating cash flow includes cash collected from customers and cash paid to employees, suppliers and other operating counterparties. It also reflects working-capital movements, so it can diverge from net income and revenue.
Inspect receivables, contract assets, deferred revenue and other working-capital lines before drawing a conclusion. Rising receivables can mean revenue was recognized before customers paid. Rising deferred revenue can mean customers paid before the company delivered the service. Either movement can be legitimate; the question is whether the balance and its cash effect are consistent with the company’s contract terms and growth rate.
Calculate or review free cash flow using the stated definition
There is no universal non-GAAP free-cash-flow formula. Many companies begin with operating cash flow and subtract purchases of property and equipment. Others also adjust for capitalized software, lease payments, restructuring, acquisition-related items or other costs.
Rank #4
Report the company-defined figure together with its reconciliation to operating cash flow. Box’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K is a useful example: it reported $332.3 million of net cash provided by operating activities and $304.6 million of non-GAAP free cash flow for the year ended January 31, 2025. Box identifies operating cash flow as the nearest GAAP equivalent and cautions that non-GAAP free cash flow should not be considered in isolation or as an alternative to operating cash flow as a liquidity measure. These are company-specific figures, not an AI-sector benchmark.
Look for cash-flow quality and persistence
One strong quarter can be caused by annual prepayments, a large collection, or a temporary working-capital release. Compare several periods and reconcile major changes. Consider capital intensity as well: an AI company may need data-center equipment, specialized hardware or capitalized software that makes operating cash flow look stronger than cash flow after investment.
A comparison framework you can reuse
| Axis | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Recognized revenue | GAAP revenue for the same period, currency, growth rate and disclosed line-item mix | Shows revenue recorded under the company’s accounting policy. |
| Recurring-revenue claim | Exact ARR or run-rate definition, date, contract scope and annualization method | Identically named metrics can represent different calculations. |
| Recognition and billing timing | Point-in-time versus over-time recognition, invoice timing, contract starts and deferred revenue | Explains why ARR, billings and recognized revenue diverge. |
| Cash conversion | Operating cash flow, receivables, deferred revenue and other working-capital movements | Tests whether growth is accompanied by cash generated from operations. |
| Free cash flow | Company definition, reconciliation and deductions from operating cash flow | Adjustments vary and may include software, leases, restructuring or other items. |
| Comparability and durability | Definition changes, currency, customer concentration, retention, cancellations and contractions | Shows whether the headline metric is comparable and likely to persist. |
Worked examples from company filings
UiPath: ARR can lead or lag recognized revenue
UiPath reported $1,666.136 million of ARR at January 31, 2025. The filing describes ARR as based on annualized invoiced amounts and says it is not a forecast of future revenue. Because different products are recognized at different times, the ARR figure should be analyzed alongside the revenue-recognition note rather than treated as fiscal-year revenue.
Samsara: keep revenue and ARR in separate columns
For fiscal 2025, Samsara reported $2,537.927 million of total revenue and $2,223.197 million of ARR. The company states that ARR should be viewed independently of revenue, does not represent GAAP revenue on an annualized basis and is not a forecast of GAAP revenue. The figures therefore belong in separate rows with separate definitions, not in a calculation that treats ARR as a second version of revenue.
Box: read the free-cash-flow reconciliation
Box reported $332.3 million of operating cash flow and $304.6 million of non-GAAP free cash flow for fiscal 2025. The $27.7 million difference reflects the company’s stated adjustments. A reader should inspect those adjustments and the reconciliation before comparing Box’s free cash flow with another issuer’s figure.

- Annualizing a short period without checking duration: Multiplying one strong month or a short contract by 12 can overstate the amount that will actually be billed or renewed.
- Calling every AI-related dollar recurring: Implementation, consulting, hardware and one-time licenses may be tied to an AI product but are not recurring subscription revenue.
- Ignoring cancellation and contraction risk: Active contracts at a measurement date may not renew, may be downgraded or may be canceled before the next period.
- Comparing labels instead of formulas: ARR, annual run rate, bookings, backlog and remaining performance obligations are different concepts. Read the definition for each.
- Overlooking methodology changes: A revised customer population or annualization rule can create apparent growth even when the underlying business changed less.
- Treating adjusted free cash flow as standardized: Excluding capitalized software, lease payments or restructuring can materially change the result.
- Using cash flow without working-capital context: A temporary collection or prepayment can boost operating cash flow without changing long-term economics.
- Presenting an issuer example as a sector benchmark: Software-company figures illustrate measurement issues; they do not establish a representative revenue or cash-conversion rate for AI companies.
How to write a defensible comparison
- Collect primary documents: Use the latest 10-K or 10-Q and the contemporaneous earnings release. Record filing date and fiscal period.
- Build a revenue row: Enter GAAP revenue, growth, currency and disclosed product mix. Link the figure to the recognition policy in your notes.
- Build an ARR row: Copy the exact definition, measurement date, included contracts, exclusions and annualization method.
- Build a cash row: Enter operating cash flow, year-over-year change, receivables, deferred revenue and notable working-capital drivers.
- Reconcile free cash flow: Show the issuer’s formula and every material adjustment from operating cash flow.
- Check durability: Review retention, renewal, expansion, customer concentration and disclosed cancellations, using each issuer’s own definitions.
- State the limits: Explain any mismatch in periods, currencies, contract scope or methodology before drawing a conclusion.
- Reach a conditional conclusion: Say whether recognized revenue is growing, whether recurring commitments appear durable and whether cash generation supports the reported growth. Do not collapse those judgments into one number.
Interpreting common combinations of results
ARR rising faster than revenue
This can be normal when new contracts are invoiced upfront while revenue is recognized over time. It can also reflect broader contract inclusion, annualization of short agreements or bookings that have not started. Check deferred revenue, contract starts and the ARR formula before calling it acceleration.
Revenue rising while operating cash flow falls
Investigate receivables, payment terms, collections and other working-capital changes. The company may be selling successfully but extending credit, or it may be recognizing revenue before cash arrives. Persistent divergence deserves more scrutiny than a single period.
Operating cash flow rising while ARR is flat
Collections on earlier invoices, annual prepayments or a working-capital release can lift cash temporarily. Review customer additions, renewal and expansion data, and inspect whether the cash increase is recurring.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFree cash flow close to operating cash flow
A small difference can mean low current capital spending, but confirm whether the company capitalizes software, uses leases or excludes other investment items elsewhere. The definitions still need to be compared line by line.

| ARR or run rate | Value, measurement date and verbatim definition |
| Contract scope | Included products, terms, usage commitments and exclusions |

Bottom line for readers
The sound comparison is a three-part test. First, verify recognized GAAP revenue and how the company records each product. Second, treat ARR as a dated, issuer-defined snapshot whose contract scope and annualization rules must be disclosed. Third, test cash conversion through operating cash flow and a fully reconciled free-cash-flow measure. A credible AI-company growth story is one in which the definitions are transparent, the periods are comparable, renewals and cancellations are addressed, and cash generation is explained rather than implied.
