Compare an AI-related company stock with a broad-market index fund by looking at what each owns, how concentrated the exposure is, what it costs, and how the risks and performance are measured. A single stock gives you exposure to one company; a fund pools securities from its benchmark, but its name alone does not reveal its holdings or concentration. The comparison is about different kinds of exposure—not a forecast that an AI association will produce higher returns.
First define what “AI stock” and “broad-market fund” mean
There is no definition of “AI stock” established here, so do not treat the label as a formal category or screening standard. If you include a company, state the rule you used—for example, a material AI-related revenue segment, a company-described business line, or a role in the AI supply chain. Verify that description in the company’s dated filings rather than assuming the label predicts future results.
For the fund, identify its exact ticker or share class and the benchmark it tracks. An index fund seeks to track an index, but it may hold every index security or use a sample. Many broad indexes are market-cap weighted, which gives larger companies larger weights; holdings are not necessarily equally represented. Check the fund’s current prospectus and holdings instead of relying on “broad-market” in its name. See the SEC’s guide to index funds.

Compare exposure and concentration
A stock concentrates your investment in one company’s business and prospects. A broad index fund distributes exposure across its benchmark’s securities, which can reduce dependence on any one company’s outcome. That does not guarantee a balanced mix: a market-cap-weighted fund can have meaningful exposure to its largest constituents, and a narrower or custom-index fund may have overlap or unexpected concentration.

Use dated fund holdings to compare the fund’s number of securities, largest positions and weights, sector exposures, and its weight in the company you are considering. The SEC notes that a total stock market index fund may own thousands of companies, but that qualitative description is not a figure for any particular fund. The fund’s own documents establish its actual portfolio. The SEC’s diversification guide explains why holding only a few individual stocks does not provide broad stock diversification.
Separate company risk from market risk
For an individual company, consider business execution, financial condition, competition, and valuation using its latest annual and quarterly filings. An AI-related business line does not remove the company-specific risks of that business or establish that its shares are attractively valued.

For a fund, consider the benchmark’s composition, sector and large-company concentration, and the possibility that the fund will not match the benchmark exactly. Fees, trading costs, sampling, and tracking error can cause performance to differ from the index. Diversification can reduce reliance on a single company, but it cannot eliminate market-wide losses. The SEC’s discussion of non-traditional index funds is also relevant when a fund follows a targeted or custom index.

Read the current prospectus fee table for a fund’s operating expenses. Also account for transaction charges and platform or account costs that apply to you; these vary by provider. Fees reduce the assets left in the portfolio to earn returns over time, even when an individual fee seems small. Do not assume every index fund is cheaper than every actively managed fund. The SEC explains the effect of fees in its investor bulletin on fees and expenses.
When comparing returns, use the same start and end dates and a consistent return basis. Compare a fund with the benchmark it actually tracks, not with a different index selected because it looks more favorable. A single stock’s return over a chosen period is not a like-for-like comparison with a fund’s return over another period. Historical performance does not establish which investment will perform better in the future.

Use the right documents for the comparison
- For a fund: Check its current prospectus and most recent shareholder report. Verify the benchmark, strategy, holdings, risks, fee table, and performance period. A prospectus describes a fund’s objective, strategy, risks, fees, performance, and pricing.
- For a company: Use its latest annual and quarterly filings for its business description, risk factors, and financial statements. Apply a stated rule when calling it AI-related.
- For changing details: Confirm the date on holdings, fee, index-membership, and company data. These details can change, so avoid treating an old snapshot as current.
The SEC’s overview of information available to investment company shareholders describes fund disclosure materials. A useful comparison records the source and date for every figure so the two investments are evaluated on the same basis.
