Compare AI stocks by first defining what counts as AI exposure, then lining up revenue growth over matching periods, checking the cash and investment required to produce it, and evaluating valuation and company-specific risks. No single metric identifies a universally best stock: total-company growth is not the same as AI-specific growth, and companies may not report AI revenue in comparable ways.

Start by defining what “AI stock” means

“AI stock” is not a standardized accounting category. It can describe a company that sells AI infrastructure directly, a cloud or software provider whose services include AI, or a diversified business with some AI-related activity. Those business models have different drivers, and their reported results do not measure AI exposure in the same way.

Classify the exposure before comparing performance

  • Direct suppliers: companies selling products or services used to build or operate AI systems.
  • Cloud and platform companies: providers that incorporate AI into cloud, software, or other platforms.
  • Diversified companies: businesses with AI-related offerings alongside substantial non-AI operations.

Check whether a company separately reports AI-specific revenue. If it does not, do not treat total sales, adoption commentary, or promotional claims as an AI revenue figure. Microsoft’s fiscal 2026 filing discusses AI product adoption and its OpenAI relationship; Alphabet’s 2025 filing warns that AI monetization could differ from historical offerings and affect growth or margins. Those disclosures help explain why exposure and accounting visibility are separate questions. Microsoft fiscal 2026 Form 10-K; Alphabet 2025 Form 10-K.

Compare revenue growth over matching periods

For each company, record total-company revenue and, where reported, relevant segment revenue. Keep fiscal year-ends and the number of years aligned. A year-over-year rate for one period is not directly comparable with a multi-year growth rate or a different fiscal period.

Separate company growth from AI-specific growth

Label each figure clearly as total-company, segment, or AI-specific revenue. If a company does not publish a comparable AI-specific figure, mark it as not separately disclosed rather than estimating it from total sales or outside claims. The cited filings provide company and segment reporting, but no cross-company set of comparable AI-only revenue statistics is established here.

One useful scale-and-growth example is NVIDIA: its fiscal 2026 Form 10-K reports $215.9 billion in total revenue, up 65% year over year. That is company-wide revenue, not a standalone AI revenue figure. The result is specific to NVIDIA’s fiscal 2026 reporting period and should not be presented as directly comparable to another company’s growth rate without aligning the periods and revenue categories. NVIDIA fiscal 2026 Form 10-K.

Use a consistent comparison sheet

Comparison item What to record How to read it
Business model and AI exposure Direct supplier, cloud/platform provider, or diversified company; identify the relevant product or segment. Different models have different growth drivers and risks.
AI revenue visibility AI-specific revenue only if separately reported; otherwise note “not separately disclosed.” Do not substitute total-company or segment sales for an unreported AI figure.
Revenue growth Total-company and relevant segment revenue over the same number of fiscal years, with fiscal year-ends identified. Compare like periods and like revenue categories.
Margins and cash generation Margins, operating cash flow, capital expenditures, and free cash flow for matching reporting periods. Growth has different implications depending on the resources it consumes and cash it produces.
Valuation Metric, share-price date, and earnings or cash-flow period used. Ratios are meaningful only when definitions and dates are clear.
Risks Company-specific risks from filings, including material dependencies or constraints. A common “AI risk” label can conceal important differences.

Check what growth costs and generates

Revenue growth alone does not show how much a company must invest to support it or how much cash it retains. Read the income statement, balance sheet, cash-flow statement, and relevant footnotes together. FINRA’s guide to using financial statements to evaluate investment opportunities also directs investors to these statements and their footnotes.

Look beyond the sales line

  • Margins: compare gross and operating margins over aligned periods. Check whether growth is accompanied by improving, stable, or declining profitability.
  • Operating cash flow: examine cash generated by operations, not only reported earnings.
  • Capital expenditures: assess the investment needed to build or expand capacity.
  • Free cash flow: compare cash remaining after capital expenditures, using the same definition and period across companies.

A fast-growing business that requires heavy investment can have a different financial profile from one that converts more of its sales into cash. The statements and notes help put the growth rate in context.

Evaluate valuation with dated, consistent measures

There is no current, common-date share-price and valuation dataset here for ranking AI-exposed companies. A price-based comparison should refresh share prices, share counts, earnings periods, and calculations together, and show the as-of date. Annual filings are snapshots; subsequent quarterly filings may change the picture.

Use P/E only when earnings make it informative

Investor.gov defines the price-to-earnings ratio as the current share price divided by earnings per share and describes its use in comparing price with past results or other companies. Investor.gov’s P/E ratio explanation. When comparing P/E ratios, state the share-price date and whether earnings are trailing or forward; do not mix those bases without labeling them.

If earnings are negative or unusually volatile, P/E may not offer a useful comparison. Clearly defined alternatives can include enterprise value to sales or free-cash-flow yield, but specify the numerator, denominator, and period used so the ratios are interpretable. A lower multiple by itself does not prove a stock is undervalued: growth expectations, margins, and risks may differ.

Read each company’s risks, not just the AI narrative

Review the risk factors and management discussion in each company’s filings. Risks that can matter to AI-related businesses include demand and customer concentration, competition, supply constraints, data-center capacity and energy availability, capital spending, regulation, export controls, and dependence on partners. Their importance varies by company, so a single generic “AI risk” score can obscure the actual exposure.

Look for bottlenecks and dependencies

NVIDIA’s fiscal 2026 filing identifies data-center, energy, and capital availability as important to customer infrastructure buildout. That is a company-specific disclosure, not a universal risk assessment for every AI-exposed business. NVIDIA fiscal 2026 Form 10-K. For other companies, use their own filings: Microsoft fiscal 2026 Form 10-K, Amazon 2025 Form 10-K, and Alphabet 2025 Form 10-K. Fiscal years differ, so identify the reporting period when you compare disclosures.

Put an individual stock comparison in portfolio context

Comparing companies does not establish whether any one stock suits a particular investor. Time horizon, risk tolerance, and the rest of a portfolio matter. Investor.gov’s 2026 investor bulletin defines diversification as investing in a variety of assets to lower overall portfolio risk; an individual-stock comparison is not a substitute for that broader view.
