Use an AI shopping recommendation to build a shortlist—not to make the final buying decision. Verify the exact product and seller, compare the total delivered cost and any offer conditions, check independent evidence, and confirm price and availability on the retailer’s site before paying.
What to verify before comparing prices
AI shopping results can be useful starting points, but they may omit products, simplify listings, or misread a request. ChatGPT says its product selection reflects its interpretation of your intent and may make mistakes. A label such as “budget-friendly” is a lead, not proof that an item is objectively the cheapest or best match. OpenAI also notes that ChatGPT’s initial response price typically reflects the first merchant shown and may not be the lowest available price. OpenAI’s shopping guidance describes these limits.
Google says its shopping research draws on product information aggregated from brands, stores, and other providers. Its “Top recommendations” are selected using relevance, ratings, price, and product features, and Google says it is not compensated for clicks into those results. Those criteria describe Google’s stated process; they do not establish that a result is best for every buyer. Google cautions that “Generative AI is experimental and info quality may vary.” Google Shopping Help explains how results are generated.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore searching for the lowest price, write down the exact product you need: manufacturer, model number or generation, size or capacity, color or variant, condition, and any essential features or included accessories. This gives you a reliable basis for checking whether two listings are actually the same item.

How to compare an AI recommendation with retailer offers
- Identify the exact product. Open the retailer listing and match the manufacturer and model number, generation, size, color or variant, package quantity, condition, and included components. A similar image or shortened product title is not enough. The FTC advises consumers to note details such as manufacturer, model number, size, color, and shipping fees when using comparison sites. It also warns that unusually low prices for expensive branded goods can be a sign of counterfeit or stolen merchandise. See the FTC’s guidance on avoiding scams.
- Check who is selling and fulfilling it. A product appearing on a retailer’s site may be sold by that retailer or by a third-party marketplace merchant. Check the seller name, fulfillment details, stock status, and delivery promise on the listing. A platform’s product page may contain offers from merchants other than the one named in an AI result.
- Compare the amount you would actually pay. Start with the item price, then account for shipping, handling, taxes, mandatory fees, and required extras such as a membership, minimum spend, bundle, or subscription. Confirm that any coupon or discount is available to you and note conditions such as account status. Check return shipping, deadlines, and restocking fees as part of the offer, not as an afterthought. FTC guidance recommends comparing total cost and deal terms, including the seller’s return rules. FTC consumer guidance outlines these checks.
- Compare package sizes using a consistent unit. For products sold in different quantities, calculate or check price per ounce, pound, liter, count, or length. Make sure the products are otherwise comparable: a unit price does not account for differences in concentration, formulation, quality, useful life, or bundle contents. NIST’s SP 1181 Unit Pricing Guide (2025 edition) recommends consistent units within a product category and conspicuous unit-price presentation online. It is a best-practice guide, not a claim that every retailer is legally required to display unit prices.
- Check the final checkout total. Add the item to your cart and review the amount due before placing the order. For offers covered by the FTC’s Rule on Unfair or Deceptive Fees, mandatory fees generally belong in the upfront total price; shipping and certain other categories may be excluded initially but must be disclosed before payment and included in the final amount. The rule’s requirements depend on the offer’s scope, so do not assume they apply to every product or transaction. FTC FAQs explain the fee rule.
How to check reviews and product claims
Use the manufacturer’s page to confirm specifications and included features, the retailer’s page to check the current offer and seller terms, and credible independent reviews or expert testing to evaluate performance and durability. Look across more than one review source. Compare evidence for the same model generation, use case, test conditions, and approximate date; a review of an earlier version may not apply to the item in your cart.
When assessing customer reviews, consider who published them, when they were posted, and whether the reviewer disclosed an incentive. A sudden burst of reviews or a single-purpose reviewer account may warrant closer scrutiny, but appearance alone does not prove a review is fake. The FTC advises consumers to consult varied sources, including trustworthy, impartial expert reviews, and notes that fake, deceptive, or manipulated reviews exist. Read the FTC’s advice on spotting fake reviews.

An AI-generated review summary or a retailer’s star average can help you locate themes, but neither replaces evidence about your own requirements. OpenAI says ChatGPT review summaries are generated from public websites and are not verified by OpenAI. OpenAI’s shopping guidance describes how to interpret them.
What to recheck just before buying
Prices, discounts, stock, and delivery options can change, and an AI answer may not reflect the offer currently available to you. Reopen the retailer’s page and confirm the selected variant, seller, availability, delivery date, return policy, and warranty terms. Then review the final amount at checkout, including applicable taxes, fees, and shipping. OpenAI’s shopping-research guidance puts it plainly: “You should still rely on the retailer’s site for the final word on price and availability.” Read OpenAI’s guidance on using shopping research in ChatGPT.
