To compare AI companies’ revenue claims fairly, first identify what each number measures, who reported it, and the period it covers. Then align the scope, currency, and accounting treatment—especially how sales through cloud or other partners are recorded. An annualized run rate is not the same as revenue recognized over a completed year, and a revenue figure alone does not establish profitability.
Start by identifying exactly what the claim says
Capture the figure’s source, publication date, period, currency, business scope, and exact label. Do not silently treat “ARR,” “annualized revenue,” bookings, billings, or a forecast as reported revenue. These measures can answer different questions.
- Recognized revenue: revenue recorded for a defined reporting period under the company’s accounting policies.
- ARR: a company-defined annual recurring revenue measure. Its meaning depends on the issuer’s definition.
- Annualized revenue or run rate: a pace projected from a shorter interval or point in time, rather than revenue necessarily earned during a completed year.
- Bookings, billings, and forecasts: other measures that should retain their own labels and definitions.
For example, a company-specific definition in an SEC filing says its ARR is not defined under GAAP, has no standardized meaning, and is not a forecast. That is a warning to check each issuer’s definition, not a universal definition of ARR. See the company’s SEC-filed ARR definition.

A filing or company earnings release reporting a completed period is different evidence from an investor presentation or a figure reported by journalists based on investor materials and sources. Attribute each number to its source and do not call a private-company figure audited unless an audit or filing supports that description.

- For a public company, locate the relevant quarterly or annual filing and earnings release. Note the fiscal-year end and accounting policies.
- For a private company, identify whether the figure comes from a company statement, investor materials, or secondary reporting. If audited statements and full policy notes are not available, say so.
- Keep the date attached to the claim: later reports or filings may change what can be established.
Align the period, scope, and currency
Before comparing two figures, check that they cover equivalent time periods and business scopes, and use the same currency basis. A fiscal year may not match a calendar year. A point-in-time annualized pace based on a recent month is not directly comparable to recognized revenue over a completed fiscal year.
Microsoft offers a public-company example of why these distinctions matter. Its July 29, 2026 results release reports on the fiscal year ended June 30, 2026, while its 2026 Form 10-K describes its accounting policies and revenue categories. Microsoft says revenue is recognized when control of promised products or services transfers to the customer, for consideration it expects to receive. Its filing also describes cloud-based AI offerings within service and other revenue. Keep the fiscal period and any separately defined non-GAAP measure clear when using these results as a comparison point. Microsoft’s 2026 Form 10-K and July 29, 2026 results release.

Check whether partner sales are reported gross or net
When a company’s product is sold or delivered through a cloud provider or another partner, the company’s role in the transaction can affect whether it records the full customer amount as revenue or only its fee, with the partner’s share treated as an expense. The relevant accounting analysis concerns responsibilities and control for the specified service; a difference in presentation alone does not establish that either treatment is improper.

What recent OpenAI and Anthropic figures do—and do not—show
Axios reported on October 8, 2026 that OpenAI’s annualized revenue was $50 billion, roughly $20 billion below an earlier reported $70 billion figure. Axios described the earlier figure as an attempt to gross up revenue using Anthropic’s methodology to create a closer comparison. These are reported investor-material and journalistic figures, not audited historical revenue established by that article. Keep the figures labeled as annualized and attributed to Axios. Axios’s September 3, 2026 report described Anthropic as recording the full value of Claude sales through cloud partners and the cloud providers’ cuts as expenses, while OpenAI was described as treating partner sales differently. The report also cautioned that accounting did not explain the full reported revenue gap. This raises a valid reconciliation question, but the cited material does not include the companies’ audited statements and full accounting-policy notes needed to verify the analysis or calculate a definitive apples-to-apples result. Put revenue beside costs and cash results
Revenue measures the top line, not profit or cash generation. Where comparable disclosures are available, examine cost of revenue, operating expenses, operating income, and cash flow alongside revenue. A larger revenue claim by itself cannot establish that a company is profitable, burning less cash, or generating more cash.

A practical comparison checklist
- Record the claim: exact figure, label, source, date, currency, period, and scope.
- Find the closest primary record: use the filing and earnings release for public companies; clearly label private-company investor figures and media reports.
- Match the basis: align completed periods, fiscal boundaries, currency, and business scope.
- Read the definition: determine whether the figure is recognized revenue, ARR, annualized revenue, bookings, billings, or a forecast.
- Investigate partner treatment: check whether sales are presented gross or net and what the company’s accounting policy says.
- Add financial context: compare relevant expenses, operating results, and cash-flow figures when available.
- State what remains unresolved: if the evidence does not support a full reconciliation, do not manufacture an adjusted comparison.
