AI code-review scores are meaningful only when you know what was tested and how findings were judged. Precision measures the share of a tool’s reported issues that are valid; recall measures the share of known valid issues it finds. A tool can score well on one while doing poorly on the other, so no single number establishes which reviewer will work best for your team.

What do precision, recall, and F1 actually tell you?

GitHub defines precision as the proportion of surfaced issues that are valid, and recall as the proportion of known valid issues a reviewer finds. In practical terms, precision indicates how much of the tool’s feedback is worth investigating; recall indicates how much of the benchmark’s known problem set it catches.

  • High precision, lower recall: fewer reported findings may be noise, but the tool can still miss many known issues.
  • Higher recall, lower precision: the tool may catch more known issues while asking reviewers to sift through more invalid findings.

F1 combines precision and recall into one score. That can help summarize a result, but it can conceal the trade-off: a team that prioritizes low-noise reviews may value precision differently from one seeking broader issue coverage. “Accuracy” is therefore too vague unless the speaker specifies the metric and its scoring rules.

Why benchmark design changes the meaning of a score

Benchmarks do not all test the same sample or define the answer key in the same way. A set built from defects injected into real pull requests differs from one based on historical fixes or a multi-source collection of findings. The result also depends on which issue categories are counted, how reviewers label findings, how much repository context tools receive, and whether tools use default or tuned settings.

GitHub ReviewBench: a multi-source golden set

In its October 5, 2026 announcement, GitHub describes ReviewBench as a corpus of 219 public pull requests across 19 languages. The company says it analyzed 103.9 million GitHub pull requests to characterize language and repository-size distributions, and weighted the benchmark toward more substantial changes. Findings draw on human reviewers, author follow-up commits, deterministic tools, and frontier language models, then receive severity and category labels under a common validation rubric. These design choices describe the benchmark’s scope; they do not mean every real-world pull request or issue type is represented.

GitHub reports 96.6% agreement among senior engineers independently labeling golden true positives before release. That is agreement on the labeling task—not a claim that any code-review product is 96.6% accurate.

Grounded and augmented scoring

ReviewBench separates grounded metrics, which score against findings already in its golden set, from augmented metrics, which also assess unmatched findings as potentially valid or false positives. This matters because a tool could identify a genuine problem missing from the original answer key. GitHub uses grounded recall for its headline cross-system comparison; augmented recall has a larger denominator as a system surfaces additional findings, making direct comparisons less straightforward.

Qodo’s injection-based evaluation

Qodo’s February 4, 2026 account describes a benchmark using 100 genuine merged pull requests and 580 issues. The company says it injected compliance violations and functional or logical defects, evaluated the substance and file-and-line localization of comments, and scored hits, false positives, false negatives, precision, recall, and F1. It says seven tools were tested using default settings. Qodo reports a 60.1% F1 for its system in this evaluation. These are vendor-reported results from Qodo’s stated setup, not an independent universal ranking or a directly interchangeable score with ReviewBench’s.

How to compare published results fairly

Before comparing two scores, check whether the evaluations align on the factors that can change the result:

  • Metric and answer key: Is the figure precision, recall, F1, or another measure? Are findings judged only against a fixed set, or can a valid unmatched finding earn credit?
  • Issue severity and category: Does the benchmark emphasize critical correctness or security defects, or also count lower-severity testing, maintainability, and style findings?
  • Sample and context: What languages, project types, repository context, and pull-request sizes are included? Does the evaluation resemble full pull-request review?
  • Tool configuration: Are model and version disclosed? Were tools run on the same changes with the same context access? Were defaults used, or were settings tuned?
  • Workflow fit: Where does review happen, how do findings reach developers, and how much human validation does the process require?

If these details differ or are missing, treat the figures as results within their own stated methods rather than as a league table. ReviewBench and Qodo describe different datasets and methods; the cited evidence does not establish one matched, independent test covering every current product.

What a score cannot tell you about day-to-day use

A benchmark can measure findings against a defined set, but it cannot by itself establish how useful the feedback will be in a particular team’s repositories and review process. Operational fit matters: a team needs to know where reviews run, what context a tool can use, how findings are presented, and whether developers can validate them efficiently. A published aggregate score does not answer those workflow questions.

Human review remains necessary. GitHub’s Copilot code-review documentation says, “Copilot is not guaranteed to spot all problems or issues in a pull request,” and advises validating its feedback and supplementing it with human review. That warning is a useful boundary for AI review claims generally: treat automated comments as assistance, not proof that a change is safe or complete.
