If you’re looking for an RPG with good exploration, combat, and story, compare those qualities separately before choosing a game. The best fit depends on which matters most to you—and what trade-offs you’ll accept in the others.
Start by ranking what matters to you
Put combat, exploration, and story in priority order. Then look for descriptions and reviews that explain how each game delivers those qualities, rather than relying on a broad “best RPG” label or a single review score. A game can excel at one dimension while asking you to accept a different style in another.
- Combat: What actions and decisions do encounters require? Consider timing, positioning, abilities, build planning, experimentation, and how costly mistakes feel.
- Exploration: Does the game reward wandering and observation, or mainly guide you between marked objectives? What kinds of discoveries matter, and how much direction do you want?
- Story: Is the narrative presented through scenes and quests, or assembled from optional conversations and clues? Do you prefer a guided plot or one you interpret as you play?
Compare combat by the decisions it asks you to make
“Action RPG combat” does not describe one universal feel. Look for concrete descriptions of what you do during a fight, how abilities shape your options, and how enemies respond to mistakes or repeated tactics.
Elden Ring: measured fights and costly carelessness
GameSpot’s review describes Elden Ring combat as measured, with enemies that punish careless play. That points to a style where patience and attention to danger matter; it is not a promise that every encounter will suit every player.

Dragon’s Dogma 2: vocation-specific play and enemy reactions
PlayStation describes Dragon’s Dogma 2 as a single-player, narrative-driven action RPG with vocation-specific combat and a customizable main Pawn. Its official page says, “Dragon’s Dogma 2 features cutting-edge combat where enemies will learn your tricks and react to them.” That is promotional feature language, not an independent comparative verdict on combat quality.
Judge exploration by how discovery works
A large map is not, by itself, evidence of satisfying exploration. Ask whether the game makes discovery central, how much it guides you, and whether you enjoy finding things without being led directly to them.
Rank #2
GameSpot’s Elden Ring review emphasizes freedom to explore and places discovery at the center of the experience. If you want direction toward every next objective, find out how much guidance the game actually gives before buying; the cited review does not establish a universal measure of guidance.

Compare how each game tells its story
Story delivery can matter as much as the premise. A clearly presented, quest-led plot and a narrative assembled from fragments can both appeal, but they ask for different kinds of attention.
Rank #3
Elden Ring: a story pieced together
GameSpot describes Elden Ring’s story as delivered in fragments for the player to piece together. Consider whether interpreting scattered information sounds rewarding or frustrating to you.
The Witcher 3: a narrative-driven approach
PC Gamer characterizes The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt as narrative-driven. Its review also describes real-time combat using attacks, effects and buffs, evasion, and sign abilities. This is an editorial review of the 2015 release, not a current technical assessment of every later edition.

Use evidence without forcing a winner
Bandai Namco’s catalogue identifies Elden Ring and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt as action RPGs and connects the genre experience with skills, exploration, and story. These classifications help establish what the games are; they do not rank them against one another.

The available descriptions come from different kinds of sources: an official feature page, a publisher catalogue, and editorial reviews. They offer useful qualitative clues, but no common comparative scoring method or controlled head-to-head test establishes which game has the “best” combat, exploration, or story. Avoid turning those descriptions into a composite score or a numerical ranking.
Check platform and edition before you buy
Once a game appears to fit your priorities, confirm that the exact version is right for you. Named games can have platform-specific editions; check your platform, region, edition, and the current retailer listing. Feature descriptions alone do not establish current stock, price, or which edition a listing sells.
