To tell whether a sale is genuinely attractive, compare today’s total price with the recent history for the exact same product and variant—not just the crossed-out “was” price or the advertised discount. Check the model and condition, review a price-history chart, include shipping, and treat past prices as context rather than a forecast.
1. Confirm you are comparing the same product
Before opening a chart or comparing stores, identify the exact item. Use its manufacturer or model number, then match details that change the product or its value: size, color, storage capacity, configuration, and condition. A chart for a similar model or a different variant can make an ordinary price look unusually low.
The Federal Trade Commission recommends checking product identifiers and details such as size and color when comparison shopping. Its online shopping guidance is a useful checklist for making sure offers are comparable.
2. Check a history for the exact listing or variant
Use a price-history source that covers the product you intend to buy, and check whether it tracks the same listing or variant. Coverage differs by tool, and an available chart is not necessarily a complete record of every seller or configuration.

Amazon price history
Amazon says its price-history feature provides up to 365 days of history on eligible product detail pages. That is Amazon’s stated feature scope, not a guarantee that every listing has a chart or a full year of data. See Amazon’s price-history explanation.
Google Chrome Shopping Insights
Google Chrome’s Shopping Insights can show price history and price ranges across the web for products, including some variants such as colors and storage capacities. Check the current Chrome interface: feature availability and coverage may vary. Google documents the feature in its Shopping Insights and price tracking help.
Keepa for Amazon listings
Keepa documents Amazon marketplace price histories and notifications for selected tracked products. Its documentation establishes those capabilities, but it does not establish that every product has complete history or that the service is free. See the Keepa API documentation.

3. Read the price pattern, not just the advertised discount
A discount percentage compares the current price with a displayed reference price; it does not show whether today’s offer is good against the product’s own past prices. Look at the visible highs and lows and the recent pattern for the matching listing. A price that is near the product’s repeated ordinary levels is less compelling than one notably below its recent range.
Do not treat a chart’s lowest point as a promise that the product will return to that price, or the current low as proof that it cannot fall further. History describes past prices; it does not predict the next change.
4. Compare the offer you will actually pay
When comparing sellers or listings, use the final checkout cost and confirm the offer still matches the product you want. The FTC’s online shopping advice highlights shipping fees as well as checking seller policies.

- Match the model, variant, and condition.
- Check who sells the item and whether the listing is the intended one.
- Add shipping fees to the item price.
- Review the seller’s price-match policy and any post-purchase price-adjustment policy.
If two price-history sources disagree, or one has little data, compare another source or retailer listing. Differences may reflect different listings, variants, or coverage; do not treat one chart as definitive without checking what it represents.
5. Decide whether to buy now or track the price
If you need the item now and the current total price is acceptable compared with its recent history and other matching offers, you can buy with a clearer sense of the trade-off. If the purchase is not urgent, use a tracking feature to watch for a change, then recheck the live listing and total cost before buying.
Amazon describes asking Alexa for Shopping whether an item has been on sale in the past 30 days or is at a recent low. Keepa documents notifications for selected tracked products. An alert is a prompt to reassess the live offer—not proof that the price is the lowest possible or that a better one will not appear.
Why a sale price can change
Prices may move over time. The FTC says businesses may use dynamic pricing—for example, adjusting prices based on demand or inventory—provided the pricing information is not misleading. A changing price alone does not establish that a promotion is misleading; evaluate the displayed offer and the total you will pay.
