For a fair trend comparison, use the latest six-month results against the corresponding six months of the immediately preceding financial year. That year-on-year pairing controls for seasonality. You can also compare the latest half-year with the immediately preceding half, but label that as a sequential comparison because it covers a different season. Match accounting basis, dates, currency and metric definitions first; then compare profit, margins, cash flow, earnings per share, debt and liquidity while reading the notes for one-off items, estimate changes and policy changes.
What “previous period” should mean
Half-year reports are easy to misread because “previous period” can describe two different benchmarks. The default for judging whether a business improved is the same six-month period in the prior financial year. For example, compare January–June 2026 with January–June 2025, not automatically with July–December 2025. Matching months usually places weather, holidays, school terms and other recurring demand patterns on the same footing.
A sequential comparison with the immediately preceding half-year can still reveal acceleration, deceleration or a change in momentum. It should appear beside, not instead of, the year-on-year comparison and must be identified clearly. A company whose first half is seasonally weak may look dramatically better against the second half of the prior year even when its underlying annual trend is unchanged.
Start by confirming the reporting framework and dates
Read the cover page and accounting-policy note
Record the financial year-end, the exact start and end dates of the current interim period, and whether the report covers six months or another interval. Note the accounting framework named by the company, such as IFRS or a jurisdiction-specific equivalent. IAS 34 Interim Financial Reporting applies when an entity that uses IFRS in its annual financial statements publishes an interim report asserting compliance with IFRS. IAS 34 itself does not decide which entities must issue interim reports; listing rules, securities law or other local requirements generally do that.

Check whether the periods really match
- Write down the current half-year dates and the corresponding prior-year dates.
- Check for a 52/53-week calendar, a changed year-end or an acquisition that changes the group being reported.
- Confirm that both figures use the same presentation currency and units, such as millions of euros.
- Identify restatements or reclassifications that make the prior period differ from the originally published version.
If the company changed its financial year, a six-month total may not represent the same months as the prior-year column. Explain the mismatch rather than calling it a clean year-on-year comparison.
Use the correct comparator for each financial statement
Not every line in an interim report is a six-month flow. The comparison date depends on the statement.
| Statement or measure | Primary comparator | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Income statement measures such as revenue, operating profit and profit for the period | Corresponding interim period of the prior financial year; also current year-to-date versus prior year-to-date | Both columns cover comparable activity over time. IAS 34 paragraph 20 calls for current-interim and year-to-date performance comparisons. |
| Earnings per share | Same interim period and matching year-to-date period, using the company’s stated basic or diluted definition | Per-share results are affected by profit and the weighted-average share count. |
| Statement of financial position (balance sheet) | Position at the current half-year-end versus the preceding financial year-end | A balance sheet is a snapshot at a date, not a six-month flow. |
| Cash-flow statement | Cumulative year-to-date cash flows versus the matching prior-year year-to-date period | Cash-flow totals accumulate from the start of each financial year. |
| Statement of changes in equity | Cumulative year-to-date movements versus the matching prior-year period | Equity changes are presented as movements over the period. |
Do not compare a June balance-sheet figure with a December balance-sheet figure as though one represented six months of activity. The dates are different, so explain changes in working capital, debt or cash as point-in-time movements.

Build a like-for-like comparison table
Before interpreting performance, copy the current and comparator values into a worksheet with their units, dates and definitions. Keep reported figures separate from adjusted or alternative-performance measures.
| Metric | Current half-year | Prior-year half-year | Absolute change | Percentage change | Definition or warning |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | Company value | Matching six-month value | Current minus prior | (Current minus prior) ÷ absolute prior × 100 | Check whether continuing operations and acquisitions are included. |
| Operating profit | Company value | Matching six-month value | Current minus prior | Same formula | Use the same reported or adjusted basis in both periods. |
| Operating margin | Operating profit ÷ revenue | Prior operating profit ÷ prior revenue | Current margin minus prior margin | Prefer percentage-point change for margins | A margin can rise while profit falls if revenue contracts. |
| Profit for the period | Company value | Matching six-month value | Current minus prior | Same formula | Inspect tax, finance costs and unusual items. |
| Basic and diluted EPS | Company value | Matching six-month value | Current minus prior | Same formula, if meaningful | Check share-count changes and whether figures are restated. |
| Operating cash flow | Year-to-date value | Matching prior-year year-to-date value | Current minus prior | Same formula | Working-capital timing can cause large interim swings. |
| Cash, borrowings and net debt | Current half-year-end snapshot | Preceding year-end snapshot | Current minus prior date | Use cautiously for negative or zero bases | Include maturity, covenant and liquidity context from the notes. |
Use the company’s own definition for an adjusted metric and state what it excludes. If a definition changed, do not place the two figures in one trend line without reconciliation.

Calculate movements without misleading percentages
Absolute change
For any metric, calculate current value − comparator value. State the unit, currency and period. An increase of €18 million is an absolute movement; it does not by itself say whether growth was large for that business.
Percentage change
Use (current value − comparator value) ÷ |comparator value| × 100. The absolute value in the denominator keeps the arithmetic sign clear when the comparator is negative, but a percentage based on a loss can still be difficult to interpret. If the prior value is zero, a percentage increase is undefined; report the absolute change and describe the move as from zero to the current amount.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMargins and percentage points
Calculate each period’s margin separately, then subtract the prior margin. If operating margin moves from 12% to 14%, report a 2-percentage-point increase, not simply 2% growth. Keep rounded inputs consistent so the published totals and your calculations do not appear to conflict.
Illustrative calculation
Suppose an illustrative company reports revenue of €620 million in the current half-year and €560 million in the matching prior half-year. The absolute increase is €60 million and the percentage increase is 10.7%: (€620 − €560) ÷ €560 × 100. If operating profit rises from €56 million to €62 million, operating margin changes from 10.0% to 10.0% after rounding, so revenue grew without a meaningful margin change. This is a calculation example, not a reported company result.
Read performance in an analytical sequence
1. Revenue and volume drivers
Start with revenue, then use segment, geography or product disclosures to identify what changed. Separate price, volume, mix, currency translation and acquisitions when management provides that detail. A higher total can conceal declines in a core segment if growth came from an acquired business.

2. Operating profit and margin
Compare operating profit with revenue rather than treating sales growth as proof of better performance. Explain whether margin changed because of pricing, input costs, labour, marketing, research spending, depreciation, foreign exchange or mix. Use the same reported basis in both periods.

Bridge operating profit to profit for the period. Interest expense can rise when debt increases or rates reset; tax can move because of jurisdictional mix, one-time items or changes in recognized tax assets. A stable operating result with a falling net profit requires that bridge.
4. Earnings per share
Check basic and diluted EPS separately when both are disclosed. EPS can diverge from net profit because of buybacks, new shares, options, convertibles or discontinued operations. Confirm whether the prior EPS was restated for a share split or other capital change.
5. Operating cash generation
Compare year-to-date operating cash flow with the prior-year year-to-date figure. Then inspect receivables, inventory, payables, contract assets and liabilities. A profit increase accompanied by weaker cash conversion may reflect billing timing, inventory build-up or collections risk; it is a prompt for investigation, not proof of manipulation.
6. Debt, cash and liquidity
Use the balance-sheet date comparison to assess cash, borrowings and net debt. Read debt maturities, covenant headroom, undrawn facilities and restricted cash in the notes. A lower net-debt figure at the half-year end may be seasonal if the business collects cash before paying suppliers later in the year.

Inspect notes before calling a movement a trend
Seasonality and cyclicality
Find the note describing seasonal or cyclical operations. A retailer, tourism group, agricultural supplier or heating business can earn a disproportionate share of annual profit in one half. The year-on-year half-year comparison remains useful, but it may not show the full annual cycle.
Unusual and non-recurring items
Look for restructuring costs, litigation, impairment, disposal gains, disaster effects, government support, acquisition costs and other items identified as unusual. Present reported results first, then quantify how a disclosed item affected the comparison. Do not silently remove it from one period only.
Accounting-policy changes
Interim statements generally use the same accounting policies as the latest annual statements unless a change is described. Read the policy note and any transition disclosures. A change in revenue recognition, lease treatment, consolidation or presentation can alter comparability even when the business itself did not change.
Changes in estimates
Interim reporting often relies more heavily on estimates than annual reporting. The IFRS Foundation explains that, although both annual and interim measurements use reasonable estimates, interim reports generally require greater use of estimation methods (IFRS Foundation, IAS 34 overview). Revisions to provisions, useful lives, expected credit losses, tax rates or inventory estimates can therefore contribute to a half-year movement.

Apply a wider window to highly seasonal businesses
For a highly seasonal entity, add trailing-twelve-month information through the current interim date and compare it with the preceding twelve-month period. IAS 34 paragraph 21 says this information “may be useful” for such entities (IAS 34 paragraphs 20–21, official standard text). A trailing twelve-month view combines the latest half-year with the preceding two halves, reducing the distortion caused by the point in the seasonal cycle. Keep the standard year-on-year half-year figures visible; the wider window supplements them rather than replacing them.
Worked reading example
Assume a fictional manufacturer’s report covers 1 January–30 June 2026 and presents 1 January–30 June 2025 comparatives. Revenue rises from €560 million to €620 million, operating profit from €56 million to €62 million, profit for the period from €31 million to €27 million, and year-to-date operating cash flow from €44 million to €18 million. The balance sheet shows cash of €90 million at 30 June 2026 versus €72 million at 31 December 2025, while borrowings rise from €210 million to €260 million.
- Revenue increased €60 million, or 10.7% year on year.
- Operating profit increased €6 million, while the margin stayed about 10% in both periods, so the operating improvement broadly followed sales.
- Profit fell €4 million despite higher operating profit; inspect finance costs, tax and unusual items before attributing the decline.
- Operating cash flow fell €26 million. Read receivables, inventory and payables notes to identify timing or working-capital causes.
- Net debt at the current date is €170 million (€260 million minus €90 million), compared with €138 million at the prior year-end (€210 million minus €72 million). Because those are different dates, assess seasonality and debt maturities before judging leverage.
The example shows why no single headline measure settles the comparison. Sales, operating profit, net profit, cash generation and leverage can move in different directions.

Common comparison mistakes and fixes
| Mistake | Why it misleads | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Comparing the latest half with the immediately preceding half without labeling it | Seasonality and calendar effects can dominate the result. | Make the matching prior-year half the primary comparator and present sequential figures as a separate view. |
| Treating a balance-sheet snapshot as a six-month flow | The dates and measurement concept differ. | Compare the half-year-end position with the preceding year-end and explain date effects. |
| Using reported figures for one period and adjusted figures for the other | The definitions are not comparable. | Use one basis, disclose the company’s adjustment definition and reconcile it. |
| Quoting a percentage when the prior value is zero or negative | The denominator makes the result undefined or hard to interpret. | Show the absolute movement and explain the limitation. |
| Ignoring currency and unit changes | Millions versus thousands or exchange-rate movements can create false trends. | Normalize units and identify the currency; distinguish constant-currency information when supplied. |
| Calling an estimate-driven movement operational growth | Interim numbers may reflect revised assumptions. | Read estimate and policy notes before assigning a business cause. |
| Removing every unusual item from the headline result | It can hide the actual reported outcome. | Report statutory results first, then explain disclosed one-off effects separately. |
A repeatable half-year comparison workflow
- Define the question. Decide whether you need a year-on-year trend, a sequential momentum view, or both.
- Capture period metadata. Record financial year-end, interim dates, currency, units, accounting framework and whether figures are continuing operations.
- Gather like-for-like columns. Use the matching prior-year interim and year-to-date columns for performance statements; use the preceding year-end for the balance sheet.
- Standardize definitions. Label reported, adjusted, basic, diluted, constant-currency and segment measures exactly as the company does.
- Calculate changes. Produce absolute differences, percentage changes where meaningful and percentage-point changes for margins.
- Read across statements. Move from revenue to operating profit, net profit, EPS, operating cash flow, cash and debt.
- Investigate explanations. Use notes for seasonality, unusual items, accounting policies, estimates, acquisitions, disposals and restatements.
- Test the annual context. For seasonal businesses, calculate or obtain trailing-twelve-month information through the interim date.
- Write a balanced conclusion. State what improved, what weakened, which effects are temporary or uncertain, and what evidence supports each statement.
What IAS 34 does—and does not—tell you
IAS 34 supplies presentation and comparison principles for qualifying IFRS interim reports, including current-interim and year-to-date comparisons and guidance on seasonal information. It does not create a worldwide requirement for every company to publish half-year figures. The company’s jurisdiction, listing rules and regulator determine whether an interim report is mandatory. The Australian equivalent, AASB 134, is available from the Australian Accounting Standards Board; use the framework named in the report and local rules for legal conclusions.
The standard also does not mandate the arithmetic formula for a percentage change or guarantee that a particular adjusted metric is comparable. Those are analytical choices. Your responsibility is to make the basis explicit, preserve the company’s definitions and qualify conclusions where dates, estimates or accounting changes limit comparability.
Quick Recap
Final checklist before publishing or relying on the comparison
- Are the primary periods the same six months in consecutive financial years?
- Are the financial year, interim dates, currency and units stated?
- Are income, EPS and cash-flow figures compared on the right interim or year-to-date basis?
- Is the balance sheet compared with the preceding year-end rather than treated as a six-month flow?
- Are absolute changes, meaningful percentages and margin percentage points calculated correctly?
- Are reported and adjusted measures separated and defined?
- Have seasonality, unusual items, accounting-policy changes, estimate changes and restatements been checked?
- Have debt and liquidity been read together with cash flow and maturity disclosures?
- For a highly seasonal business, has a trailing-twelve-month view been considered?
- Does every conclusion identify whether it reflects operations, financing, tax, timing or an estimate?
