For a quick, free colorization, upload a digital scan to MyHeritage In Color or Palette.fm. MyHeritage lets you colorize several photos at no charge on the web or in its mobile app, while Palette.fm provides unlimited watermarked previews and one free HD export credit. Both preserve your black-and-white source, but their colors are AI-generated interpretations—not proof of the photograph’s original colors.
Choose the right starting file
If you have a paper print, scan it first. A flatbed photo scanner is appropriate for digitizing prints; it is unnecessary when you already have a sharp, high-resolution digital file. Save the scan as a separate master file before uploading it anywhere.
Free automatic colorizers compared
| Tool | Free access | Workflow | Free-output limits | What happens to the original |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MyHeritage In Color | Several photographs free; unlimited use requires a Complete subscription | Upload on the website, colorize an existing album photo, or use the mobile app | Non-subscribers receive a MyHeritage watermark; processing typically takes 5–30 seconds, depending on image size and detail | The original black-and-white file remains intact; the colors are simulated |
| Palette.fm | Unlimited previews and one free trial HD credit | Upload, select from more than 21 filters, adjust with keywords, then download or edit | Free previews are watermarked and resized to 500 × 500 pixels; paid credits support images up to 5000 × 5000 pixels | AI colors are plausible interpretations, so retain the source scan |
| Adobe Photoshop | Free trial; otherwise paid software | Discover panel > Quick Actions > Colorize old photos, or use the Colorizer neural filter | No permanent free tier is stated on Adobe’s product page | Work on a new layer and keep the source layer unchanged |
Fastest free workflow
- Prepare the image. Scan the paper print or locate the best existing digital file. Crop obvious borders only on a copy.
- Protect the master. Put the untouched scan in a backed-up folder. Never overwrite it with a colorized export.
- Run a first pass. Try MyHeritage In Color for a straightforward result, or Palette.fm if you want to compare filters and make keyword-like adjustments.
- Inspect uncertain areas. Compare the output with the monochrome original, paying particular attention to uniforms, clothing, skies, painted surfaces and skin tones.
- Cross-check when it matters. Run the same image through the other service or try another Palette filter. Agreement between tools still does not establish the historical color.
- Export safely. Save the result as a new file, keep any watermark or resolution limitation in mind, and label it clearly as AI-colorized.
What “free” means in practice
MyHeritage In Color
MyHeritage’s initial allowance is useful for trying the service without a permanent subscription. The service says the colors depicted are “artificially produced,” and its processing normally takes between 5 and 30 seconds. A watermark is applied to non-subscriber results, and unlimited colorization requires the Complete plan.
Palette.fm
Palette’s free plan is suited to experimentation: previews are unlimited, and one free credit can produce an HD result. Free previews are watermarked and limited to 500 × 500 pixels, so they are not archival-quality exports. More than 21 filters and keyword adjustments make it useful when the first interpretation looks wrong.
#1 Best Overall
- The easiest way to scan photos and documents. Supports 3x5, 4x6, 5x7, and 8x10 in sizes photo scanning but also letter and A4 size paper. Optical Resolution is up to 600 dpi ( PS: two setting: 300dpi/ 600dpi).
- Fast and easy, 2 seconds for one 4x6 photo and 5 seconds for one 8x10 size photo@300dpi. You can easily convert about 1000 photos to digitize files in one afternoon and share with your family or friends.
- More efficient than a flatbed scanner. Just insert the photos one by one and then scan. This makes ePhoto much more efficient than a flatbed scanner.
- Powerful Image Enhancement functions included. Quickly enhance and restore old faded images with a click of the mouse.
Photoshop
Photoshop is the upgrade for hands-on control rather than a permanently free option. In the Discover panel, open Quick Actions and choose Colorize old photos, or apply the Colorizer neural filter. Create a new layer before editing so dust removal, masks and local color corrections remain reversible.
Why the colors may be wrong
Colorization models infer likely hues from patterns in the grayscale image. A dark gray jacket could have been navy, black or another shade; a pale sky may have been overcast, blue or affected by the film stock. AI cannot recover information that the monochrome exposure never recorded. Treat every color as an interpretation, especially when identifying historical uniforms, flags, vehicles or family clothing.

Keep originals and document the result
- Keep the untouched scan in its original format and resolution.
- Store a second backup before uploading or editing.
- Export the colorized version separately rather than replacing the source.
- Add “AI-colorized” and the creation date to the filename or metadata.
- Preserve the original alongside any edited, cropped or retouched copies.
Which option should you use?
- Choose MyHeritage for the simplest web or phone workflow and a quick first result.
- Choose Palette.fm when you want to compare many looks, adjust colors with keywords or test previews before using your HD credit.
- Choose Photoshop when you need layers, dust and scratch cleanup, masks, precise local adjustments or an offline, non-browser workflow.
For most people, the best no-cost approach is to preserve the scan, test MyHeritage and Palette.fm, and keep the colorized copy clearly identified. A free preview can show how an image might look, but it should not replace the historical source.
