AI can speed up the first correction pass by helping normalize exposure, white balance, and contrast. It does not reliably replace shot matching or creative grading: confirm your footage and delivery color space, use automation as an editable baseline, then review continuity and the exported result.
What AI can—and cannot—do in a color workflow
Color correction establishes a technically sound baseline; creative grading shapes the final look. Adobe describes Auto Color as a correction step that typically comes before creative grading. Its Auto Color feature uses machine learning to adjust exposure, white balance, and contrast, and leaves those adjustments available in Lumetri’s Basic Correction controls for individual fine-tuning and overall intensity changes. Adobe’s Auto Color instructions were last updated August 18, 2026.
That makes automation useful for getting started, not a guaranteed finished grade. The cited software documentation does not establish a universal time-saving figure or show that automated correction can finish every project without human review.

1. Identify the footage and delivery target
Determine whether your camera footage is log/raw or already display-referred, and decide whether the export is for SDR or HDR. Those choices affect how the footage should be interpreted and transformed. In Premiere, color management can automatically transform most supported log and raw camera formats to SDR or HDR. Some formats, proxies, or purchased log footage may need their color space tagged. See Adobe’s color-management overview.

2. Normalize the footage before applying a look
Make sure the camera input and output color spaces are appropriate before judging color. If an automatic color transform is already active, do not add an unrelated LUT on top without checking the result. A LUT is not a universal substitute for correctly interpreting every camera’s footage.
3. Apply Auto Color as an editable first pass
- In Premiere, choose Window > Lumetri Color.
- In the Lumetri Color panel, open Basic Correction and select Auto.
- Review the exposure, white balance, and contrast adjustments. Fine-tune the individual sliders and adjust the overall intensity to suit the shot.
Adobe says Auto Color can be used on source footage, including log footage and footage with LUTs applied. That does not remove the need to check that the footage is being interpreted and transformed as intended.

4. Match neighboring shots before styling
Compare adjacent shots, especially when they come from different cameras or lighting conditions. Check whether brightness, neutral areas, and skin tones feel consistent across a cut. Correct obvious shot-to-shot differences before adding a strong look; otherwise, the look may emphasize rather than solve them.

5. Add the creative grade after the baseline is sound
Use curves, selective adjustments, or a creative look once exposure and continuity are acceptable. Keep adjustments editable where possible so you can revise the look without undoing the technical correction.

6. Review representative shots and the export
Check a range of shots on a reliable display, including difficult highlights and skin tones. Verify that the export’s SDR or HDR settings match the intended delivery. Software features alone cannot guarantee that every monitor or export will reproduce color identically.

To decide between these options, weigh footage and format support, correction versus creative controls, multi-shot matching needs, SDR/HDR delivery, integration with your existing edit, and the amount of manual control you want. Resolve’s broader grading feature set is not evidence that it will be faster for every editor.
