Use a shovel enchanted with Silk Touch to collect a grass block intact. Grass blocks cannot be crafted; if you only need grass on a patch of dirt, let it spread from a nearby grass block instead.
Collect a grass block with Silk Touch
- Find a naturally generated grass block in the Overworld. Grass blocks appear in most Overworld biomes, according to Mojang’s Block of the Week: Grass.
- Use a shovel enchanted with Silk Touch to mine it. The block drops as a grass block, which you can carry and place elsewhere.
Silk Touch is the direct, controlled method when you have the enchantment. Mining grass with an ordinary tool does not give you the grass block itself. Mojang’s article, published October 6, 2017, identifies a Silk Touch shovel as the way to pick one up.

Can you craft a grass block?
No. Mojang says grass blocks cannot be crafted. There is no crafting recipe to make one from dirt, seeds, or other materials. If you do not have Silk Touch, use an existing grass block as a source and allow the block to spread to dirt.

A less predictable possibility is an Enderman that is already carrying a grass block. The Minecraft Wiki’s grass block entry says the Enderman drops the block it holds when killed. This depends on finding an Enderman holding one, so it is not a dependable substitute for Silk Touch.

Make grass spread onto dirt
Place ordinary dirt next to an existing grass block and give the grass time to spread. Mojang describes spreading as the alternative to crafting more grass blocks. The Minecraft Wiki notes that the source grass needs sufficient light above it and that spread occurs only within a limited nearby range. Its details may vary by edition or version, so treat them as general guidance rather than a guarantee for every Minecraft release.

- Keep the source grass block intact and nearby while you wait.
- If the dirt does not change, check the light above the source block and whether the target is ordinary dirt.
Which method should you use?
| Method | What you get | Reliability and effort |
|---|---|---|
| Silk Touch shovel | The mined grass block itself | Direct and controlled if you have a Silk Touch shovel. |
| Grass spreading | Grass converts nearby ordinary dirt; it does not require crafting a new block | Useful when you have an existing grass block and can wait. |
| Enderman holding grass | The block the Enderman is carrying, if it is a grass block | Unpredictable; depends on finding the right Enderman. |
