Yes—Windows 11 can keep a cached preview after you delete a photo, if File Explorer generated a thumbnail for it. To clear the active thumbnail cache without deleting your remaining photos, use Disk Cleanup and select only Thumbnails. That removes cached previews Windows uses; it does not prove every recoverable trace has been securely erased.

Why a deleted photo’s thumbnail may remain

File Explorer displays thumbnail images by default, according to Microsoft’s policy documentation. When Explorer has rendered an image, Windows may store its preview in the current user’s thumbnail cache. Deleting the original photo does not necessarily remove an entry already in that cache, though this does not mean every deleted photo leaves a preview behind.

A commonly used location for the per-user cache is %LOCALAPPDATA%MicrosoftWindowsExplorer, with files named thumbcache_*.db. The location and behavior are described in specialist forensic documentation and recent reporting. Cached entries can persist until the cache is cleared, rebuilt, or overwritten; their presence does not establish that a specific deleted photo is recoverable.

Clear thumbnails with Disk Cleanup

Microsoft lists Thumbnails as a Disk Cleanup category. To remove the active cache while leaving other cleanup categories untouched:

  1. Open Start search, type Disk Cleanup, and open it.
  2. Select the drive to clean, usually the Windows drive, and select OK.
  3. In the list of files to delete, check Thumbnails. If you only want to clear thumbnail previews, uncheck any other categories you do not want removed.
  4. Select OK, then confirm the deletion.

These are the steps in Microsoft’s Disk Cleanup instructions. A Microsoft Q&A response explains that choosing Thumbnails clears the cache rather than the original photos or folders; this is a forum answer, not a formal product guarantee. Explorer may show generic icons or blank previews briefly, then create thumbnails again as you browse folders.

Reduce future thumbnail display

Microsoft documents an icon-only display policy for File Explorer in its Thumbnails Policy CSP documentation. This changes how images are displayed; it is not the same as clearing previews already cached. The documentation also describes a separate policy for turning off caching in hidden thumbs.db files for network folders. That network-folder policy is not evidence that all local per-user thumbnail caching is disabled.

What clearing the cache does—and does not—guarantee

Disk Cleanup is an ordinary file-cleanup feature, not a documented forensic wipe. The available Microsoft instructions explain how to remove the thumbnail category, but do not claim secure erasure. A 2011 forensic study of Windows 7 found that the methods it tested did not securely delete thumbnail-cache files; that historical result is not a Windows 11 test. A specialist reference also cautions that remnants may persist in unused database space and that other copies, such as shadow copies, may matter.

For routine privacy, clearing the cache removes the active cached previews Windows uses. If you are handling highly sensitive data, the reviewed sources do not establish a Microsoft-backed Windows 11 procedure that guarantees forensic-grade erasure of every trace. Do not treat the Disk Cleanup confirmation as proof that no thumbnail or other copy can be recovered.
