For Nintendo NES, SNES, and N64 systems, clean exterior surfaces with a soft cloth that is only slightly damp with water, and let them dry completely. Treat cartridge contacts differently: keep them dry, do not touch or blow on them, and do not use alcohol or other solvents. Turn the console off before inserting or removing a cartridge.
Clean exterior surfaces without wetting the electronics
Nintendo’s support guidance for NES, SNES, and N64 components says to use a soft, slightly damp cloth and water only, then let the component dry completely before using it again. A soft cotton cloth is suitable for this exterior cleaning. Do not pour water onto the console or let moisture run into openings.
For Nintendo handhelds, including Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance, Nintendo advises turning the system off and unplugging accessories before cleaning. Do not pour liquid directly onto a handheld or submerge it, and make sure it is completely dry before use. See Nintendo’s handheld system cleaning and maintenance guidance.

Nintendo warns against touching Game Pak connectors, blowing on them, or allowing them to get wet or dirty. It also says: “Do not clean with benzene, paint thinner, alcohol or any other solvent.” Do not use a damp cloth, alcohol, sprays, or an abrasive eraser on cartridge contacts based on this guidance.

Before inserting a Game Pak, inspect its edge connector for foreign material. Turn the console off before inserting or removing the cartridge, and do not force it into place. Nintendo repeats the solvent warning and connector-inspection advice in its Game Boy Advance safety documentation.
Routine cleaning steps for Nintendo cartridge systems
- Turn off the console before removing or inserting a cartridge.
- Inspect the cartridge edge connector for foreign material without touching the contacts.
- Wipe exterior components with a soft cloth that is slightly dampened with water only. Keep the cloth away from connectors and openings.
- Allow the cleaned component to dry completely before reconnecting or using it.
Why advice differs by model and source
Nintendo’s current support guidance specifically covers NES, SNES, and N64 components; its handheld page covers the Game Boy family and other handheld systems. These instructions should not be assumed to apply to every vintage console brand.

An archived NES Cleaning Kit manual describes a model-specific method involving an isopropyl alcohol and water mixture. That historical kit instruction conflicts with Nintendo’s general warning not to clean Game Paks with alcohol or other solvents, so it is not a sound basis for a general cartridge-cleaning method. The manual is available through a third-party archive; its original date and present applicability are not established.
What this routine care does not cover
These instructions address routine surface care and cartridge handling. They do not establish a safe general procedure for opening consoles, removing corrosion, replacing cartridge batteries, or cleaning systems from other manufacturers. For those jobs, use guidance specific to the exact model rather than applying Nintendo’s instructions broadly.
