Clean and inspect your desert air cooler before its first seasonal use; at shutdown, turn off the water, isolate power, drain and clean it, then dry and cover or store it as its design allows. Start with the exact model’s owner manual: a portable cooler and a roof-mounted or ducted system can have different access, drainage, pad-cleaning, and service requirements.
First, identify the cooler and make it safe
“Desert cooler,” “swamp cooler,” and “evaporative cooler” are commonly used for overlapping equipment. Seasonal instructions are not interchangeable, however. A portable unit may be unplugged and moved to sheltered storage; a roof-mounted or ducted cooler is connected to a building and may require service-level work or roof access. Use the manual for the exact model to determine how it opens, drains, and should be serviced.
- Before opening panels or inspecting internal components, switch the unit off and unplug it or isolate its power using the method specified in its manual. Keep hands clear of fan blades.
- Do not run a pump without water in the cooler; Portacool warns that doing so can damage components in its equipment guidance (Portacool seasonal maintenance guide, August 21, 2025).
- Do not climb onto a roof or open equipment if you are not equipped to do so safely. Seeley recommends authorized service for maintenance or checks on roof-mounted Breezair coolers (Breezair EXQ/EZQ/EXS owner’s manual).
How to prepare a cooler before the season
- Check the manual and the installation. Confirm whether the unit is portable, roof-mounted, or ducted, and identify its drain, water connection, and approved cleaning method. Follow its instructions for removing panels or pads.
- Isolate power before inspection. Turn the cooler off and unplug or isolate it as the manual specifies. Do not reach into fan openings.
- Clear exterior dust and debris. Clean the casing, vents, and fan openings without forcing debris into the unit. Inspect the cord, housing, casters where fitted, and visible water components for damage.
- Inspect the pads or media. Look for cracks, brittleness, clogged areas, mineral scaling, or salt deposits. Clean only by the method approved for that media; replace it if the manual or its condition calls for replacement. Pad material and fit vary by model.
- Check water components where accessible. Look for leaks and, if the design has a float valve, check that it operates as described in the manual. Roof-mounted work may be better left to authorized service.
- Reassemble and test. Put each pad back in its original position and secure all panels. Connect or fill the water supply as directed, then run a test. Check for even water distribution across the media, dry spots, leaks, unusual noises, or error messages. Stop and consult the manual or a service provider if something is wrong.
Clean pads gently—and use the right method
There is no universal pad-washing method. The Breezair EXQ/EZQ/EXS manual says not to wash its pads with a high-pressure water spray and says salted-up pads should be replaced. Portacool, by contrast, recommends a spray nozzle and brush for debris on its HydroTek media. These directions apply to different products: use the method specified for your cooler, not the one that seems most convenient.
How often to clean an evaporative cooler during the season
Follow the manufacturer’s schedule and adjust inspections if mineral deposits or other problems appear. Portacool’s seasonal guide suggests daily media drying, weekly reservoir and media checks and cleaning, and monthly exterior and vent inspection and a test run. Those are Portacool recommendations, not a schedule established for every evaporative cooler.

If the cooler will sit idle for more than a few days, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) recommends emptying its drain pan. Standing water can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and bacteria, including Legionella. Where water is hard or mineral-rich, inspect for buildup and consult the manual about drain, bleed-off, or automatic-flush options.
What mineral buildup and bleed-off mean
Minerals can accumulate in the water system and on pads. PNNL says bleed-off can reduce mineral concentrations but may increase water use by 10% to 50%; an automatic-flush system is another design option (PNNL evaporative cooling systems guide). Bleed-off is therefore a maintenance trade-off, not a cost-free fix. Use the system’s design and instructions to decide what applies.

How to winterize an evaporative cooler
At season’s end, shut off water, isolate power, drain standing water, clean the pan or reservoir and media, and leave components dry before storage or covering. The exact order and disassembly differ by model.

For its portable equipment, Portacool recommends cleaning the reservoir and media, drying both completely, and removing the pump and reservoir where applicable. Secure the power cord and keep the unit dry and sheltered; its guidance also says to store it away from freezing temperatures, open flames, and heat. Use mild soap or a spray nozzle and brush only where the model’s cleaning instructions allow.

Roof-mounted or ducted coolers
PNNL recommends shutting off the water line, draining and cleaning the pan, and fitting a winter cover to installed systems. For the Breezair EXQ/EZQ/EXS family specifically, the manual directs owners through shutting off the water, removing pad frames, isolating power, cleaning distribution channels, draining the tank, and cleaning the tank and pump filter; it also refers to cleaning the salinity probe if fitted. Do not treat that sequence as universal or attempt roof work without safe access and appropriate skills.
Choose a cover for the cooler’s model, installation, and dimensions; there is no single universal size. Replacement pads also need to match the model and the pad’s dimensions and material. The Home Depot’s general guide includes fall and winter maintenance advice, but the cooler’s own manual remains the controlling source for model-specific steps (The Home Depot guide to using and maintaining an evaporative cooler).

When scheduled service is needed
Service intervals depend on the manufacturer, installation, environment, and use. The Breezair EXQ/EZQ/EXS manual calls for scheduled service after the first year and then every two years, ordinarily before summer. It warns that adverse environments or non-domestic use may require more frequent service, notes that maintenance affects warranty coverage for those models, and says local rules may impose service intervals. Do not apply that schedule to other brands or models without checking their instructions.
