Clean and lubricate each 3D printer motion component according to the instructions for your exact printer model. Smooth rods, profiled linear rails, and threaded lead screws are different mechanisms; they may need different products, application methods, and maintenance intervals. Don’t assume a lubricant or cleaning solvent that works on one part is safe for another.

Before you start: identify the part and check its manual

Find the manufacturer’s maintenance guide for your printer model and identify the component you plan to clean: a smooth rod with linear bearings, a profiled linear rail, or a threaded lead screw. Appearance alone is not enough to establish which cleaner or lubricant is compatible.

Use the manual’s directions for the specific component. The examples below show why that matters: Prusa separates the lubricant for its CORE One/+ smooth rods and Z lead screws from the dedicated product for its linear rail, while Phrozen’s Sonic Mighty 8K guide describes its own procedure for the Z screw and rail guide.

How to clean and lubricate a printer motion component

  1. Check the model-specific instructions. Confirm the component, approved cleaner, lubricant, application method, and maintenance timing in the printer manufacturer’s guide.
  2. Remove dust and debris gently. Use the clean cloth or tissue specified by the manufacturer. For the CORE One/+ linear rail, Prusa calls for a clean tissue or cloth and warns against degreasers and chemicals that could damage the carriage rubber.
  3. Lubricate only if the manual calls for it. Apply the product specified for that exact component. Do not substitute a general-purpose oil or grease, or use lubricant intended for a different part.
  4. Move the axis as instructed. This distributes lubricant along the intended travel path. For the Sonic Mighty 8K, Phrozen’s instructions move the T-plate up and down after lubricating the Z screw and rail guide.
  5. Wipe off excess and keep lubricant contained. Phrozen instructs users to remove excess lubricant and warns against touching other printer parts with gloves that have contacted lubricant.

If an axis still moves roughly after the prescribed cleaning and lubrication, stop and consult the printer’s manual or manufacturer support. Do not assume a disassembly or bearing-cleaning procedure applies across printer models.

How the procedure differs by component

Smooth rods and linear bearings

For the CORE One/+, Prusa directs users to clean the Y-axis smooth rods with a clean paper towel and apply a small amount of Prusa Lubricant. The same instructions say bearings may be removed, cleaned with alcohol, and greased inside only if the axis remains rough after recent cleaning and lubrication. Keep that bearing procedure specific to the CORE One/+; do not treat it as a general instruction for other printers.

Profiled linear rails

Prusa’s CORE One/+ guidance says to remove debris from the rail with a clean tissue or cloth, without degreaser or chemicals, then lubricate the rail every 3–6 months using the dedicated rail lubrication set. It specifically says not to use Prusa Lubricant or other products outside that set on the rail. Prusa’s XL guidance also calls for avoiding chemicals and using its dedicated rail lubrication set; it says not to remove the bearing from the rail.

  • Long Lasting Lubrication: The 3D grease is in the form of a paste, not easy to dry or flow; It can tightly adhere to the mechanical surface, maintain lubrication effect for a long time, and reduce frequent application
  • Non-toxic: This 3D printer lubricant grease meets certified environmental standards, colorless, odorless, Non-toxic, rust and corrosion resistant; Non irritating volatilization during use, safe for both home and work
  • Lubricant Grease Application: Widely compatible with all 3D printers, and suitable for various 3D printer accessories, such as: Z-axis lead screws, linear rods, guide rails, gears, bearings, pulley systems, stepper motor shafts, etc

Lead screws

On the Original Prusa XL, Prusa’s guide says to clean the Z lead screws with a clean paper towel after approximately 500 print hours, apply a moderate amount of Prusa Lubricant with the printed thread greaser, move the Z axis, and autohome. Phrozen’s Sonic Mighty 8K instructions use a different application procedure for that model. Follow the directions for your own printer rather than combining steps from different manufacturers.
