To clean Sony WH-1000XM6 ear pads, switch the headphones off, unplug the USB cable, and wipe the pads gently with a soft, dry cloth or 99% water-based wipes. Wipe the headband and other exterior surfaces with a soft, dry cloth, then let the headphones dry thoroughly at room temperature. Avoid alcohol, thinner, benzene, and other solvents.
Clean the ear pads safely
- Power off and unplug. Turn off the headphones and disconnect the USB cable before cleaning.
- Wipe gently. Use a soft, dry cloth or 99% water-based wipes on the ear pads. Sony specifies these options in its WH-1000XM6 care and cleaning guidance.
- Let them dry. Allow the headphones to dry thoroughly at room temperature before using them.
Do not use thinner, benzene, alcohol, or similar solvents; Sony warns these may damage the finish or cause other problems. Water, sweat, and skin oils can darken the pads over time, which Sony says does not affect headphone performance.
Wipe the headband and exterior
Use a soft, dry cloth on the headband and exterior surfaces. While wiping, extend and retract the slider and rotate the ear pads to reach less accessible areas. Take care not to push dirt into the USB Type-C port or headphone cable input jack.
Remove sweat and moisture promptly
Do not leave sweat or moisture sitting on the headphones. Sony warns that moisture can cause metal parts to rust and ear pads to deteriorate or become moldy. Wipe moisture away with 99% water-based wipes and let the headphones dry thoroughly at room temperature.

Clean the microphone mesh without pushing debris inside
Debris, sweat, or moisture on the mesh in front of the microphones can affect noise cancelling or cause abnormal noise. Sony advises occasional cleaning with a cotton swab. Work gently and avoid pushing dirt into the mesh.
Remove or replace ear pads only when necessary
Sony advises limiting pad removal to when it is necessary. Before removing a pad, switch off the headphones, disconnect the USB cable, and move away from iron sand or metal dust, which can be attracted to the headphones’ magnets. Follow Sony’s WH-1000XM6 pad removal and installation instructions.

- Pull the pad straight out, perpendicular to the earcup.
- Match the replacement pad to the marked left or right side.
- Align the claws, then press firmly until all five click into place.
For worn or damaged pads, Sony’s general guidance is to contact an authorized service center. Replacement methods vary by model, and service may involve a fee or depend on parts availability. Check Sony’s WH-1000XM6 support page or local Sony support for current regional service options and stock.
