Clean retro running shoes panel by panel: brush off dry dirt first, then use only the least moisture and abrasion that each material can tolerate. Mesh and fabric may allow gentle hand-cleaning with mild soapy water, while suede, nubuck, and leather need material-specific care. Check the shoe’s care guidance before starting, and let the pair air-dry fully.
Check the materials before cleaning
Retro runners often combine mesh with suede, nubuck, leather, or other overlays. A method that is suitable for one panel can stain, harden, or otherwise damage another. Inspect the shoe and its tongue label, and look up the care guidance for the exact model if available. Gather a few suitable tools
- A soft-bristle shoe brush or clean toothbrush for dry dirt and gentle brushing.
- A clean, damp cloth or sponge for wiping and for suitable fabric panels.
- Mild detergent for materials whose care instructions allow it.
- A suede brush and a cleaner specifically made for suede or nubuck when those materials are present.

Clean the shoes in a low-risk sequence
- Remove loose parts where practical. Take out the laces and removable insoles before cleaning. Clean them separately and leave them to dry before putting them back. ASICS recommends removing these items before cleaning. ASICS shoe-cleaning guidance
- Brush away dry dirt. Use a soft-bristle shoe brush or clean toothbrush with light strokes. Removing grit first helps avoid grinding it into the surface during wiping. Do not scrub aggressively, particularly on delicate mesh or suede.
- Clean the outsole separately. ASICS’s guidance allows a brush, warm water, and mild soap for the soles. Keep this solution away from delicate uppers, then wipe the sole with a damp sponge or cloth to remove residue. ASICS shoe-cleaning guidance
- Clean mesh, fabric, canvas, or woven panels cautiously. If the shoe’s care instructions allow it, use a damp sponge with mild soapy water. Work in small areas with gentle pressure, then wipe away soap with a clean damp cloth. Do not submerge the shoe: ASICS advises against soaking, and adidas cautions that unsuitable cleaning can damage woven or mesh material. - Handle suede and nubuck dry first. Brush dust and dirt with a suede brush. If more cleaning is needed, use a product specifically made for suede or nubuck and follow its label; do not apply the soapy-water method used for suitable fabric panels. New Balance Japan recommends brushing before using suede cleaner, while ASICS and New Balance advise specialist cleaners for delicate leather and suede materials. - Use leather-specific care on leather panels. Follow the shoe maker’s instructions and choose a cleaner intended for leather. New Balance warns that washing leather may cause severe discoloration and hardening; ordinary soap and water are not a safe default for these panels. Air-dry the pair without heat
After cleaning, remove moisture with a clean cloth where appropriate and leave the shoes to air-dry fully before wearing. New Balance’s undated general care guidance recommends 24 hours of air-drying; that is its instruction, not a guarantee that every shoe will dry in that time. New Balance also says not to machine-wash or machine-dry its shoes. Avoid direct heat as a shortcut, and follow the exact model’s care guidance. New Balance shoe-care FAQ

For a mixed-material shoe, use the method for each panel rather than treating the whole upper as one surface. When the material or care instruction is unclear, stay with dry brushing and consult the shoe maker’s guidance before adding moisture.
