Let Le Creuset enameled cast iron cool to room temperature, then wash it with warm water, mild dish soap and a soft, non-metal sponge. Avoid thermal shock, metal scouring pads and abrasive cleaners. For stubborn residue, soak the pan or simmer baking-soda water for about 8–10 minutes before cooling, rinsing and drying it.

How do I clean my Le Creuset Dutch oven or skillet?

  1. Let the cookware cool to room temperature before washing. Do not put a hot pan in cold water or pour cold water into a hot pot: Le Creuset warns that thermal shock can crack the enamel. See Le Creuset’s Dutch oven cleaning guidance.
  2. Wash with warm water, mild dish soap and a soft, non-metal sponge or brush. Soft natural and nylon tools are suitable; avoid metal pads and abrasive cleaners that could damage the surface.
  3. Rinse well and dry thoroughly before storing.

Hand washing is the practical default. Le Creuset says its Dutch ovens are dishwasher-safe, but repeated dishwasher use may dull the enamel over time; the brand says this does not hinder cooking performance.

How do I remove stuck-on food or oil?

Start with a warm, soapy soak

Fill the cooled cookware with warm soapy water and let it soak until the residue softens. Then wash gently with a soft sponge or brush.

For persistent residue, simmer baking-soda water

Le Creuset recommends adding one or two tablespoons of baking soda to warm water in the cookware and bringing it to a simmer for about 8–10 minutes. Let the liquid cool, then drain, rinse and dry the cookware. Do not drain or rinse a hot pan with cold water.

For stains and marks, choose a gentle option

For heat stains, discoloration and everyday buildup, Le Creuset names its optional Pots and Pans Cleaner, an 8.5 fl. oz. product intended for enameled cast iron and stainless steel. The brand also lists Bar Keepers Friend and a baking-soda-and-water paste for tough stains, oil residue and marks. These options are not needed for routine washing; follow product directions and avoid aggressive scrubbing.

Does the enamel need seasoning?

No. Enameled cast iron has a porcelain enamel surface and does not need the seasoning routine used for raw cast iron. Le Creuset’s guide to its enamel finishes distinguishes smooth, stain-resistant sand interior enamel from black satin enamel, which is semi-matte and lightly textured. Both are enamel finishes, not raw metal.

Care for black satin enamel patina

Black satin enamel develops a natural patina with use. Le Creuset says the patina enhances cooking results and should not be scrubbed away. Clean the surface gently rather than treating the patina as residue to remove.

What can damage or change the finish?

  • Thermal shock: Hot cookware meeting cold water can crack enamel. Cool it before washing.
  • Abrasion: Metal scouring pads and abrasive cleaners could damage the enamel; use a soft, non-metal cleaning tool instead.
  • Repeated dishwasher cycles: The Dutch oven guidance says these may dull the finish, even though the cookware is dishwasher-safe and cooking performance is not hindered.
  • Scrubbing black satin patina: The patina is intentional and should be preserved.

Le Creuset describes enamel as resistant to staining, chipping and cracking, and sand interior enamel as stain-resistant. These are resistance claims, not a promise that the finish cannot stain, dull, chip or crack.
