After a round, brush or wipe dirt from the clubface and grooves, use warm soapy water on the clubhead only if grime is stuck, then dry the club thoroughly before storage. Use a soft-bristle brush or damp cloth, and check the maker’s care advice before treating a specialty finish.
How to clean golf clubs after a round
- Remove loose dirt. Shake off soil and grass, then brush or wipe the clubface with a soft-bristle brush or damp cloth. For modern iron grooves, Titleist identifies a toothbrush or plastic-bristle brush as suitable in its Club Care 101 guidance.
- Loosen stuck grime on the head. If wiping does not remove it, soak the clubhead in warm soapy water for a few minutes, then brush it clean. This approach is recommended in Titleist’s Vokey groove-care guidance. Keep the cleaning focused on the head; do not assume every club or finish can be immersed.
- Wipe the grips if needed. Use a damp cloth to remove dirt. Titleist staff guidance for T-Series irons describes gently wiping grips this way after cleaning the heads.
- Dry before putting clubs away. Use a clean towel to dry the head thoroughly, paying particular attention after wet play. Callaway advises cleaning and drying clubs before storage after damp play or before off-season storage.
Work along the grooves to lift dirt; do not scrape or reshape them. Avoid assuming a hard metal brush is safe for every club finish.
Adjust the routine to dirt and finish

| Specialty or uncertain finish | Check the manufacturer’s care information or contact customer support rather than applying an unverified cleaner or treatment. |
Callaway’s customer-service FAQ also advises wiping wedges clean and dry after use and directs customers with groove questions to its customer-service team.

How often should you clean your golf clubs?
Clean them after each round, especially the face and grooves, so dirt does not remain when the clubs go into storage. Titleist’s Vokey guidance recommends cleaning after each round. A quick brush or wipe is usually enough for light dirt; reserve soapy water for grime that will not come off with wiping.

Cleaning does not restore worn grooves
Dirt in a groove and wear in the metal are different issues. Cleaning removes debris, but it cannot restore a worn groove or establish whether a club conforms to equipment rules. The USGA equipment rules on club faces set groove requirements, and a USGA interpretation explains that normal wear can make grooves no longer conform. If conformity matters for competition, check the current USGA/R&A rules or ask the relevant committee.

Under USGA Rule 4, cleaning a club is allowed, but applying a substance to the clubhead to affect how it performs during a stroke is prohibited. Use cleaning methods to remove dirt, not to alter playing characteristics.
