For most foam or EVA camp shoes, use cool or lukewarm water, a little mild soap, and a soft cloth or soft-bristled brush. Wipe away soap residue, then let the shoes air-dry in a shaded, ventilated place at room temperature. First check the care label or instructions for your exact model: liners, straps, adhesives, and finishes can require different treatment, and machine washing is safe only when the manufacturer says it is.
Check the shoe’s instructions before cleaning
Foam camp shoes can include materials beyond the foam shell, such as textile liners, leather, straps, glued joints, or decorative finishes. Care instructions can differ even within one brand, so check the shoe’s label or the manufacturer’s page for the exact model before washing. If the shoe has removable parts, confirm that they are meant to come out.
Do not assume a shoe is machine washable because it is made of foam or because another style from the same brand can go in a washing machine. Skechers, for example, says its Foamies should be hand-washed in cold water and not machine-washed or machine-dried; its machine-washable instructions apply only to styles identified as washable. TEVA likewise advises against machine washing unless its product team approves it. Skechers cleaning guidance and TEVA’s care and cleaning guidance are brand-specific; your model’s instructions take priority.
Clean foam camp shoes by hand
- Brush off loose dirt. Use a soft cloth or soft-bristled brush. Work lightly around textured areas, seams, and outsole grooves so you do not abrade the surface. A soft cloth is enough for smooth foam; a brush can help with dirt caught in grooves.
- Wash with mild soap and cool or lukewarm water. Dampen the cloth or brush, add a small amount of mild soap, and gently clean the foam. TEVA recommends lukewarm or cold water with mild soap for most synthetic sandals, shoes, and boots; Camminare recommends warm soapy water and a soft cloth or sponge for its EVA footwear. - Wipe or rinse off soap. Use clean water to remove suds and residue. Avoid prolonged soaking unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it; guidance against soaking can be specific to a particular shoe construction.
- Clean removable liners separately only if permitted. Remove a liner or insole only when the model allows it. Follow its own care instructions, and let it dry fully before putting it back. Permissions vary: Camminare allows washing specified removable liners in lukewarm water up to 40°C, while Joybees describes machine washing its own removable liners. Air-dry the shoes without overheating them
Let the shoes dry at room temperature in a shaded, well-ventilated spot. Do not use a tumble dryer, heater, or radiator, and avoid leaving them in strong direct sun for a prolonged period. Excess heat can deform or shrink EVA footwear. Camminare and Joybees both caution against direct or extreme heat for their EVA shoes; Camminare recommends drying flat at room temperature. Other footwear makers give similar drying cautions for their own products, but those instructions are not a substitute for camp-shoe guidance. Salomon says to dry its hiking shoes at room temperature away from sun or excessive heat and not to machine-wash them. Salomon’s hiking-shoe care guidance is relevant context, not permission or a rule for every foam camp shoe.
What not to use on foam camp shoes
- Do not use bleach, harsh chemicals, strong solvents, or abrasive scrubbers. Manufacturer guidance for foam and synthetic footwear favors mild soap and soft tools. Hard brushes and aggressive scrubbing can damage finishes or surfaces.
- Do not machine-wash by default. Use a washing machine only if the manufacturer explicitly approves it for your exact shoe model.
- Do not use direct heat to speed drying. Dryers, heaters, and radiators can expose foam to damaging heat; prolonged direct sun can also be a concern.
- Do not apply one material’s care method to the whole shoe. A textile liner, leather detail, glued component, or finish may need separate care.
- Do not assume soaking is harmless. Follow the model’s instructions, particularly when the shoe includes materials or construction beyond a simple foam shell.
When to follow a different method
Manufacturer advice is not universal. For example, HOKA’s cautions about hot water and soaking refer to particular trail-shoe constructions, while Joybees warns against prolonged water exposure for its EVA footwear. Use warnings in the context of the product they describe, and follow the exact model’s instructions when they differ from general foam-cleaning guidance.
