Cite a screenshot as a dated record of what appeared in a browser—not as a complete copy of a web page. Identify the page and its publisher, give the full URL and capture time with time zone, state when you accessed it, and link to an archived copy when one exists. Keep the citation with the image and explain what the screenshot cannot establish on its own.
Use a traceable citation, not just a caption
A reader should be able to identify the page, understand which version you viewed, and distinguish the visible screenshot from other evidence. Treat the capture record and citation as a pair. This is a practical editorial checklist, not a universal legal citation format.
Use this template and adapt its punctuation and ordering to your publication’s style:
Author or organization. “Page or post title.” Website or platform, full URL. Captured [date and time, time zone]; accessed [date]. Screenshot by [collector, if relevant]. Archived copy: [timestamped archive URL, if available].

Include the collector only when relevant, and be precise about who made the capture. If someone else supplied the image, say so rather than implying that you captured it.
What to record when capturing the page
- Identify the source. Record the full URL as displayed, including the protocol and any path or parameters needed to identify the page. Note the page or post title, author or publishing organization, and website or platform.
- Record when and how you accessed it. Note the capture date and time, including the local time zone, and the access date. When practicable, include the URL and date/time in the screen capture itself. SWGDE’s online-content guidance says: “All available information displayed should be included in the screen capture such as URL and date and time.” SWGDE, Best Practices for Acquiring Online Content, section 7.1.
- Preserve the original image. Keep the unaltered capture. If you crop, highlight, blur, or annotate a copy, label it as edited and record what changed and why; do not let an edited image be mistaken for the original.
- Check whether the page can change. For changeable content, the access date helps identify the state you consulted. Cochrane distinguishes dynamic web pages from dated publications hosted online in its reference guidance.
- Look for an archive or saved record. If available, cite the archived version separately, using its timestamped URL and archive date. The UK National Archives’ guidance for archived government pages recommends identifying the original publication or document and site, the archive date, the timestamped archive URL, and the access date. Use the archive’s own capture details.
- Verify the claim and context. Locate the original source where possible and corroborate the claim independently. A genuine image can still be paired with a misleading description. The House of Commons Library briefing on online information advises checking original sources and context and comparing versions or independent reporting where available.
What a screenshot proves—and what it does not
A screenshot can document the visible browser presentation at the time of capture, including on-screen wording and layout. By itself, it does not preserve all page metadata, links, hidden or off-screen content, or page behavior. It also cannot establish the page’s earlier or later state or prove that the image file is authentic.

State the limits that matter to your fact-check: for example, that the image shows a visible portion of a page at a particular time, not every element of the page or the history of its content. If the claim turns on material outside the screenshot, seek additional evidence rather than implying the image captures it all.

| Evidence form | What it can help show | Limitation to explain |
|---|---|---|
| Screenshot | The visible browser presentation at capture time, including layout and on-screen wording. | It is static and does not retain all metadata, links, hidden content, or page functionality. |
| Timestamped web archive | A preserved version associated with an archive timestamp and retrievable URL. | The archive citation identifies that archived capture; it does not by itself prove every part of the live page was captured. Use the archive’s own capture details. |
| Saved or harvested web record | Depending on the capture method, more page content and link structure may be retained. | Dynamic behavior and referenced resources may not be completely reconstructed. Describe the capture method and date. |
For an archived copy, cite its timestamped URL and archive date separately from the live-page citation. The UK National Archives provides guidance on citing pages in the UK Government Web Archive; its recommendations concern archived government pages, so do not treat them as a universal citation rule.

Preservation needs vary by purpose. NARA says agencies may preserve web content through point-in-time snapshots accompanied by a site map. For permanent federal web-content transfers, its guidance requires methods that retain hypertext functionality and does not accept static screenshots for that purpose. These are federal records-management requirements, not universal rules for private fact-check articles. See NARA’s Guidance on Managing Web Records and NARA’s Appendix A: Tables of File Formats.

If you need a screenshot but do not want to set up a browser capture, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return an image or PDF. For a basic capture, this cURL command saves a WebP image:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace the target URL with the page you need and provide your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the request options and response details. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server includes tools for AI agents to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common citation mistakes to avoid
- Only naming the website: Include the specific page title and full URL so readers can locate the source.
- Leaving out the time zone: A timestamp without its local time zone can be ambiguous. Record the time zone alongside the capture time.
- Treating an archive and live page as the same item: Identify and cite the archived capture separately.
- Presenting an edited image as untouched: Preserve the original and label any modified version.
- Overstating what the image establishes: A screenshot is not proof of the complete page, its history, or the authenticity of the file.
- Skipping verification: Check the original source and context; an accurate capture can still support an inaccurate claim if it is miscaptioned.
Legal and style limits
The template above is a practical way to make a fact-check traceable, not a universal style-guide rule. The cited guidance does not establish a cross-jurisdiction rule about whether a screenshot is admissible evidence. If admissibility in a particular proceeding is the question, consult legal guidance for that jurisdiction and case.
