The right farm fence depends on what you need it to do: contain livestock while letting wildlife pass, keep deer out of a valuable crop, or deter bears. These goals call for different designs. Start by identifying the target animals, crop or livestock needs, site conditions and maintenance you can manage; then confirm the design against local NRCS or Extension guidance before buying materials.

Start with the job the fence must do

Before comparing wire or fence height, write down the practical requirements that determine whether a design will work:

  • Target wildlife: Identify the species and whether the goal is to let it cross, discourage it, or exclude it.
  • Livestock and crops: Specify which animals must stay contained, which crops need protection, and when those crops are most vulnerable.
  • Scale and site: Consider acreage, perimeter length, terrain, gates, and whether the fence will be permanent or seasonal.
  • Upkeep: Be realistic about inspection, vegetation management, repairs, and—if it is electric—reliable power.
  • Wildlife movement: Decide whether native wildlife should be able to cross, particularly at migration routes or regular crossing points.

There is no universal design or verified cost-per-foot comparison for these different jobs. Construction cost depends on the chosen system and site; weigh it against crop value, protection period, maintenance and the consequences of wildlife getting through.

Match the design to the protection goal

Farm need Design direction Key trade-offs and checks
Contain cattle or bison while allowing big game to cross Flexible three-wire hot-ground-hot electric fence Wyoming Game and Fish Department guidance lists wires at 22, 32 and 42 inches. Construction, tension, visibility, reliable power and livestock needs all matter.
Exclude deer from a small, valuable area for extended protection Tall woven-wire fence Indiana DNR describes a minimum height of 8 feet. It is costly and more complex to build, but North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission describes woven wire as effective under high deer pressure and easy to maintain.
Protect seasonal crops or a garden from deer Temporary electric polytape Indiana DNR describes a design around 30 inches above ground, most effective for areas of 40 acres or less. It is removable, but needs inspection and a constant current.
Deter bears at an enclosure or livestock area Electrified wires added to suitable net-wire or panel fencing Use a system designed for bear deterrence. Wire arrangement and grounding depend on the existing fence and site; get livestock-specific advice when animals also need containment.
Keep migration crossings permeable Wildlife-friendly fence with a low top strand, suitable spacing, or let-down sections at frequent crossings USDA Farmers.gov describes a top strand of 42 inches or less as common in wildlife-friendly designs. Balance passage with livestock containment and wire visibility.

When wildlife should be able to cross

A wildlife-passage fence is not meant to exclude the animals that need to move through the landscape. Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s 2004 guidance lists a three-wire electric design, with hot, ground and hot wires at 22, 32 and 42 inches, for containing cattle or bison while allowing deer, elk, pronghorn or moose passage. The exact heights are an example from that guidance, not a universal prescription.

Turtle & Tortoise Fence - 3 ft by 100 feet Welded Wire Mesh Fencing - Galvanized -Gardens, Livestock Enclosures, Tree Guards, Construction (20)
  • TORTOISE FENCE - Sandbaggy's Tortoise Fence is built to keep tortoises within an enclosed area. Assembled with T-Posts, Tortoise Fencing is required for many construction sites since tortoises are an endangered species
  • WILDLIFE EXCLUSION FENCING FOR ROADS: Prevent turtles and tortoises from crossing and accessing roads, which further puts their lives at risk
  • TOUGH 14 GAUGE WIRE - Made to be a tough 14 gauge wire, Sandbaggy's Tortoise Fence is built to last. Welded with a 1 inch by 2 inch wide opening, Sandbaggy's Tortoise Fence exceeds most Department of Transportation requirements for a tortoise fence
  • GALVANIZED AFTER WELD - Steel wire is galvanized to prevent rust from forming and increases the longevity of the fence. We take it a step further. We galvanize the welding around the joints of the wire to further extend the life of the wire.
  • MULTI PURPOSE FENCING: Beyond tortoise protection, this welded wire mesh is ideal for gardens, livestock enclosures, tree guards, and general-purpose fencing needs.

A USDA NRCS Montana supplement gives a flexible high-tensile example using smooth 12.5-gauge wire, fiberglass line posts no more than 1 inch in diameter, and wood braces at corners, gates and significant direction changes. Its spacing guidance is 22–30–40/42 inches, with the top wire no higher than 42 inches. These are example specifications; local conditions and livestock needs may call for changes.

Flexibility and visibility both matter. NRCS notes that properly tensioned wire helps prevent wildlife damage and that flexibility can let animals pass between or over strands. Fence stays can make passage harder, while smooth wire may be difficult for animals to see; markers, flagging or visible-coated wire can improve visibility. The 2020 supplement quotes Wyoming Game and Fish Department habitat extension biologist Rory Karhu: “Using high-tensile wire at the proper tension is key to prevent wildlife damage.”

When deer must be kept out

Long-term protection for valuable crops

For high-value crops or small areas needing extended protection, a tall woven-wire barrier can be appropriate. Indiana DNR describes a minimum height of 8 feet, noting that deer can easily jump lower fences. North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission characterizes woven wire as costly and difficult to build, but easy to maintain and effective where deer pressure is high.

Before choosing it, consider the full perimeter, terrain, gates, installation complexity and whether contractor help is needed. A tall barrier is a different investment from a seasonal deterrent, so compare the construction and upkeep with the crop’s value and the length of time protection is needed.

Seasonal deterrence

For temporary crop protection, Indiana DNR describes visible electric polytape installed around 30 inches above ground and says the approach is most effective on areas of 40 acres or less. It relies on both visibility and a shock association, so the fence needs regular inspection and a constant current. Indiana DNR says deer must encounter a live fence to learn to avoid it.

A single-strand electric wire by itself is a poor deer barrier: it can be difficult to ground properly, deer may pass without receiving a shock, and the wire is hard to see. Polytape is a more visible option for temporary use, but it is not a substitute for a tall physical exclusion fence where dependable long-term protection is required.

When bears are the concern

Bear deterrence calls for a purpose-designed electric system, often with electrified lines added to existing net-wire or panel fencing. Texas A&M AgriLife recommends permanent smooth galvanized steel or aluminum wire for this use. Its guidance distinguishes permanent wire from temporary polywire and says polytape is less effective for bears and is not recommended for bear deterrence.

The grounding and wire arrangement must suit the existing fence and the site. If livestock also need to be contained, consult local Extension or livestock experts about the design and how to train animals to respect the electric fence. Texas A&M AgriLife also advises against using household or industrial wire as lead-out wire because it is not rated for electric-fence systems.

Check local specifications before building

The NRCS national Fence (382) Conservation Practice Standard is a starting point, not a stand-alone installation plan. NRCS directs users to local Field Office Technical Guide specifications for planning. Contact the local NRCS office or Extension service to check the design for your location, livestock, terrain and wildlife goals before purchasing materials. Local legal requirements, electrical requirements and funding eligibility are not established by the national standard alone.

Use this checklist before buying materials

  1. Write down the target wildlife and whether it must pass, be deterred or be excluded.
  2. Identify livestock containment needs, crop vulnerability period, acreage, terrain and desired fence life.
  3. Choose the matching design category: wildlife passage, tall deer exclusion, temporary deer deterrence or bear deterrence.
  4. For electric designs, plan for a reliable energizer and power supply, suitable grounding, visible wire and regular inspection.
  5. Ask the local NRCS office or Extension service for applicable specifications, then confirm material sizes, spacing, bracing, gates and maintenance needs against that guidance.
