Build the characters who solve a problem on teams you actually use—not simply the newest or highest-ranked characters. First identify your target content and the role your roster is missing, then estimate the material bill and invest in predictable upgrades before spending heavily on random Relic rolls.
Start with the team and content you want to improve
There is no universal investment ranking that fits every Honkai: Star Rail account. A character’s value depends on your roster, equipment, teammates, Eidolons, target mode, and current game version. A tier-list position is therefore a starting point for comparison, not an instruction to spend resources.
Begin by naming the goal: story progression, a specific endgame mode, or several teams. Then identify which teams already work and what is preventing the team you care about from doing its job. A candidate is more compelling when they fill that gap, enable a coherent team, or improve a team you actively play.

Before committing, compare each candidate on the same practical dimensions. These are decision checks, not a formal score; a character can be an excellent build in one roster and an expensive, low-impact choice in another.

- Team contribution: Does the character fill a missing role, enable a team you can assemble, or meaningfully improve a team already in use?
- Owned support and equipment: Do you have suitable teammates and a compatible Light Cone, or would the character require several other characters to be built at the same time?
- Investment threshold: Can the character perform their basic job at modest investment, or do they rely on a particular Trace level, stat threshold, signature equipment, Eidolon, or teammate?
- Overlap and flexibility: Does the character add a capability your roster lacks? Can their equipment be reused on another team if your plans change?
- Target content: Do they address the encounters or mode you are trying to clear?
- Opportunity cost: What active-team upgrade will have to wait while you spend Trailblaze Power and materials on this build?
Build recommendations are conditional too. Star Rail Builds explains that Light Cone rankings are character- and build-specific, while Relic rankings can change with team composition, Speed tuning, Eidolons, Light Cones, and other assumptions. Check the individual character page and its displayed update information rather than treating a general ranking as timeless: Star Rail Builds FAQ.
Estimate the remaining material cost before you begin
Use the in-game Leveling Guide and Build Target to plan the chosen character instead of guessing at the full bill. HoYoverse’s Version 3.0 update notice described the Leveling Guide as showing progression for a selected character’s levels, Light Cone, Traces, and Relics, and allowing players to designate a leveling target to calculate required materials: Version 3.0 “Paean of Era Nova” Update.
This makes it easier to distinguish a character who needs a few focused upgrades from one whose team, Light Cone, or stat requirements would consume resources better spent elsewhere. Treat the guide as a planning aid: it shows the requirements for the target you set, while you still need to decide whether that target is worth pursuing for your account.

Spend Trailblaze Power in predictable stages
A practical order is to secure the upgrades that reliably make a character functional before pursuing low-probability Relic perfection. HSR Zone’s Trailblaze Power guide, updated July 24, 2026 and marked checked during Version 4.4, recommends the following progression. It is a secondary guide, not an official binding rule, so recheck activity costs and game mechanics after major updates: HSR Trailblaze Power Guide.
- Unlock ascensions and useful level caps for characters on the active team.
- Raise character and Light Cone levels enough to support the role and your current progression.
- Unlock major Traces and raise the abilities that drive the character’s job. Do not max every Trace automatically: Trace priorities express relative value, and some abilities gain little practical value from extra levels.
- Equip functional Relics with appropriate main stats. A complete ideal set is not the first requirement for a character to contribute.
- Farm toward a concrete team breakpoint, such as required Speed, Effect Hit Rate, Break Effect, or survivability—but only when the character’s build and team need it.
- Chase marginal substat improvements last, and decide in advance what result is good enough to stop.
Know when to stop farming Relics
Relic farming has several layers of randomness: the set, slot, main stat, substats, and the outcome of upgrade rolls. That makes it a poor early destination for scarce resources when guaranteed levels, ascensions, or key Traces remain unfinished.

First aim for usable main stats and any required team thresholds. Then ask whether another round of farming addresses a real weakness or merely offers a chance at a slightly better roll. Stop when the character meets the intended job and a different bottleneck on an active team would matter more.

HSR Zone’s guide reports that, during the Version 4.4 check noted on July 24, 2026, Trailblaze Power regenerated at 1 point every 6 minutes, for 240 points per day, with a normal cap of 300; it also reports that one Fuel restores 60 Trailblaze Power. These are secondary-source figures and can change, so check the current client or guide after a major update. Fuel lets you farm sooner; it does not make an uncertain character investment more valuable by itself.

If a candidate also requires new supports or gear, compare the cost of that whole package against a smaller upgrade to a team you already use.
Recheck recommendations when the game changes
New characters, equipment, enemies, modes, and mechanics can change build recommendations. A guide’s ranking or priority order reflects assumptions about a particular character build and game state, not a permanent verdict. Before spending heavily, check the recommendation’s displayed update version and confirm that its team and stat assumptions match your roster and target content.
