Build the characters who fill a real gap in a team you can use now, fit the characters and weapons you already have, and can become useful with an investment you can afford. There is no universally correct first character: the best choice depends on your roster, progression, goals, and who you enjoy playing.
Start with the team’s biggest need
Before spending materials, identify what is holding your current team back. It may need more damage, healing, shielding, energy support, or reliable elemental application. Then look at the characters you own and want to play, and ask who can address that need in a team you can actually field.
A generic tier list cannot account for your available characters, weapons, or preferences. A character who makes one of your workable teams stronger is often a more practical investment than someone ranked highly in the abstract but difficult to fit into your account.
Compare candidates before committing
If you are choosing between two characters, compare them against the same practical questions. These are decision criteria, not a published scoring system; no single answer makes one character objectively best for every account.

Check what the build will cost
Character progression is made up of separate levers: character levels, weapons, artifacts, and talents. Community build overviews may also discuss constellations, but you do not need to invest equally in every system at once. Choose the next upgrade based on the character’s job and the problem you are trying to solve.
HoYoverse’s Training Guide announcement describes character-specific suggestions for levels, weapons, artifacts, and talents. It was introduced in Version 4.5, and the announcement says recommendations for characters below level 90 depend on ascension status. Treat the in-game suggestions as a starting point, then adjust for your team and goals.
Before committing, check the materials and Mora required. HoYoverse’s Help Center articles, updated September 17, 2025, explain that talent upgrades draw on specific items from multiple sources and weapon upgrades require their own materials. Costs and domain schedules may change in later game updates, so check the current in-game information when planning.
Talents and character materials
Talent books come from Domains of Mastery, whose available materials rotate by day. Higher talent levels can also require specific weekly or elite boss drops. The HoYoverse talent guide notes: “Leveling up character talents requires a combination of specific items from various sources.” Use the Adventurer’s Handbook to locate relevant bosses.

Weapon upgrades
Weapon upgrades use weapon ascension materials, common and elite enemy drops, Weapon Enhancement Ores, and Mora. Ascension materials come from Domains of Forgery, which also rotate their offerings. The HoYoverse weapon guide says Enhancement Ores can be crafted at the blacksmith or gathered through expeditions; the Adventurer’s Handbook can help track enemy locations.
Mora and route planning
Mora is a shared cost across upgrades, so include it in your plan rather than treating materials as the only bottleneck. HoYoverse lists Blossoms of Wealth, daily commissions, quests, the Battle Pass, and limited-time events as Mora sources in its talent-upgrade help article. For routes and locations, HoYoverse recommends the HoYoLAB Teyvat Interactive Map. Check the in-game schedule, Adventurer’s Handbook, and map together to plan around rotating domain days and the materials you need.

Make one targeted upgrade at a time
Once you choose a character, identify the smallest investment that addresses the team’s current weakness. A damage dealer, support, healer, and shielder may need different priorities; there is no rule that levels, talents, weapons, and artifacts must all advance together. Focus on the lever most likely to make that character more useful in the role you selected, then reassess before starting several other builds.
A version-specific example shows how a guide can define a stopping point instead of demanding maximum investment: a Version 5.5 HoYoLAB guide for Xianyun describes a budget setup at level 80/80 with talents at 1/8/8, and excludes weapons available only from the limited weapon banner. Those figures are specific to Xianyun and that version, not a universal target for other characters.

Concentrating resources on a small group of preferred characters can help you get a dependable team working before spreading materials across your whole roster. A HoYoLAB beginner guide published in 2022 recommends planning around several main characters and building others later as lineups and needs change. Its version-specific details may be dated; the useful principle is to build breadth in response to your account’s needs rather than all at once.
