Buy first the upgrade that solves the most important, frequent problem at a cost you can afford—not automatically the newest or cheapest gadget. Compare each candidate’s urgency, practical benefit, total ownership cost, repairability, support life, and compatibility. If a device still works, check whether repair or a smaller change would solve the problem before replacing it.
Start with the problem, not the product
Write down what is frustrating, failing, or preventing you from doing something with each device you might upgrade. Then describe the specific improvement a replacement would provide. “My laptop battery no longer lasts through a class” is more useful than “I want a new laptop”; it identifies a problem you can compare against other needs.
For each candidate, note its purpose, how often you use it, how long you expect to keep it, your budget, whether it fits your space, and whether it works with your other devices. Those are among the factors recommended by Consumer Protection New Zealand.

There is no universal order without knowing your devices, priorities, location, and budget. Use the same comparison criteria for every candidate rather than allowing an appealing feature or promotion to decide for you.

As a practical rule, investigate safety concerns, a device that can no longer perform an essential task, or loss of necessary software or service support before cosmetic improvements and novelty features. This is a way to organize your own priorities, not an official universal ranking. Support life matters especially for phones and tablets; the EU has requirements for certain products, described below.
Frequency and importance help distinguish useful upgrades from merely attractive ones. A device used daily for important work may deserve attention before an occasional-use convenience, even if the latter has a more noticeable new feature. This is a judgment framework, not a published scoring formula.

Compare total cost over the time you expect to use each device
The sticker price is only one part of the decision. Include setup or installation, energy use when material, maintenance and repairs, likely replacement costs over the period you expect to own it, and disposal. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) explains these ownership-cost categories in its 2024 training material.
FEMP gives an illustrative bulb example: a bulb costing $10 initially and using 20 kWh per year at about $0.10 per kWh for 10 years has $20 in electricity costs and a $30 total purchase-and-electricity cost. That is a 2024 training example, not a current universal electricity price or an estimate for other gadgets. The useful lesson is to compare costs across the expected period of use, not purchase prices alone.

Use current local prices and device-specific information for your own comparison. A device with a higher upfront price could cost less over time, or a cheaper option could be better; the result depends on its energy use, lifespan, repairs, and what you actually need it to do.
Check repair, warranty, and compatibility before replacing a working device
For an existing device, look into its likely failure, repair cost, parts availability, repair instructions, and remaining support before assuming replacement is the only option. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) identifies glued-in batteries, limited spare parts, and unavailable instructions or diagnostic software as examples of repair restrictions in its repair guidance. Ask whether a repair would restore the capability you need and whether its cost makes sense against a replacement that meets the same need.

The FTC’s 2021 advice also says that, in the United States, a manufacturer cannot refuse an otherwise covered warranty repair solely because an independent repair shop previously performed unrelated repair or maintenance, if the warranty has not expired and the later issue is covered. That is not a blanket guarantee for every fault, warranty, or country; check the actual warranty terms and applicable local rules.

Before buying, confirm that the candidate works with your existing devices and services, and check its repair costs, warranty, energy use, and expected lifespan. A feature is of little use if it requires replacing other equipment or does not work with the setup you rely on.

What EU phone and tablet rules may tell you
For covered smartphones and tablets placed on the EU market from 20 June 2025, EU ecodesign requirements address durability, battery endurance, repair access and spare parts, and operating-system upgrade availability. The European Commission’s product information describes, among other provisions, batteries retaining at least 80% of initial capacity after at least 800 charge/discharge cycles, and spare-part availability in 5–10 working days and for up to seven years after a model’s last placement on the EU market. These requirements have specific product and part scopes; do not assume every provision applies to every device or market.
The Commission also gives a modeled example in which the expected average lifetime for a mid-range smartphone rises from 3.0 to 4.1 years under the rules. That is a modeled example, not a promise about the life of an individual phone. Check whether a particular model and market are covered before using a specific requirement to compare devices.
Make a short list and choose one next step
- List each candidate and its problem. Record the current limitation and the concrete improvement you expect.
- Mark urgency and use. Note the consequence of waiting, how often the device is used, and how important that use is.
- Estimate ownership costs. Use local prices and include setup, material energy costs, likely repairs, maintenance, replacement, and disposal over the expected life.
- Check repair and fit. Investigate whether the current device can be fixed; verify candidate support, warranty, parts, and compatibility with your existing setup.
- Rank and decide. Compare urgency, useful improvement per dollar, expected years of use, and ownership cost. Buy the top candidate only if it fits without undermining essential expenses; otherwise, set a date to revisit the list.
This ranking is a practical comparison method, not a universal numeric score. If two candidates are close, favor the one that addresses a more important recurring problem, or wait until you have reliable prices and repair information for both.
