To choose where Firefox saves downloads on a computer, open Settings > General, find Downloads under Files and Applications, and choose a folder beside Save files to. To select a different folder for each download, turn on the option to always ask where to save files. Firefox for Android has a separate download-location setting.
Choose one folder for desktop downloads
- Open Firefox Settings (called Preferences in some contexts).
- Select General.
- Scroll to Downloads under Files and Applications.
- Beside Save files to, select Browse or Choose. The label can vary by operating system.
- Select the folder you want Firefox to use.
Firefox saves files to the folder shown beside Save files to. Mozilla’s download-file guidance covers the setting and how to find downloaded files.
Choose a destination for each download
In the same Downloads section, select the option to always ask where to save files. Firefox will let you choose a destination when you download a file, rather than automatically using the configured folder.

This preference controls where a file is saved. It is separate from whether Firefox saves a file or opens it with an application.

Understand why Firefox may open a file instead of asking
Firefox’s handling of a file type can affect whether it opens or is saved. In Settings > General > Files and Applications, review the action listed for that file type. For a type Firefox already recognizes, you can set its action to Always ask. For other, unconfigured types, Mozilla documents the option Ask whether to open or save files.
Firefox’s download behavior changed starting with version 98: it no longer asks what to do for every file by default. Mozilla explains that the older dialog is not the default because downloads are usually intentional. See How file downloads are handled in Firefox for details. Changing a file-type action does not replace the download-folder setting.

Change the download location in Firefox for Android
- Open the three-dot menu and tap Settings.
- Scroll to Advanced and tap Download Settings.
- Tap Default download location and choose the location.
To let another app manage downloads, enable Manage downloads with another app in the same settings area. See Mozilla’s Firefox for Android download instructions.
Find a file you have already downloaded
Select the Downloads toolbar button or open the Firefox menu to see recent downloads. Use the folder icon beside a file to reveal its location; on macOS, the control is a magnifying-glass icon labeled Show in Finder. To browse the broader download history, select Show all downloads to open the Library. Mozilla’s guide to managing downloaded files describes these controls.

Which download setup should you use?
