Choose a router by matching it to your broadband plan, the devices you use, and where your connection needs to work—not by picking the biggest speed number on the box. First identify whether your problem is a crowded network or weak coverage in particular rooms; then compare compatible Wi-Fi features, security, wired connections, and whether a single router or mesh kit suits your home.
1. Start with your broadband plan and the problem you need to solve
Check the speed and type of internet service you pay for, then note where performance falls short. If the connection is slow across the home, the router may not be the only cause: the service itself, the modem or gateway, or a wired connection can matter. If performance is good near the router but poor in distant rooms, coverage is the more relevant issue. If many devices compete at once, network capacity may matter more.
A router’s advertised combined wireless rate is not the speed one device will necessarily receive, nor a promise that your internet plan will deliver that rate. Amazon Web Services describes 9.6 Gbit/s as Wi-Fi 6’s theoretical maximum; realized throughput depends on the devices, configuration, and environment. AWS explains Wi-Fi 6 and its performance limits.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2. Check whether your devices can use the router’s features
List the phones, computers, TVs, game consoles, and other devices whose connection matters. Newer Wi-Fi features require compatible clients. Older Wi-Fi 5 devices can connect to a Wi-Fi 6 router, but they do not receive Wi-Fi 6 speeds or all of its capabilities, according to AWS.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
For Wi-Fi 6E or a router advertising 6 GHz, check both ends of the connection: the router and the device must support 6 GHz. A newer router can still serve older clients, but its latest features will not automatically upgrade them.
3. Match the Wi-Fi generation to your actual needs
Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax): consider it for a busy network
Wi-Fi 6 is the name for IEEE 802.11ax. Its capacity improvements can help a router handle many simultaneous devices and competing connections. That makes it relevant to households with several people streaming, gaming, video-calling, or using connected devices at the same time—provided the clients can use the features.
Rank #2
- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
Do not buy Wi-Fi 6 on the assumption that the standard directly increases range. AWS says it can help manage existing connections and make edge connections more stable, but its features do not directly improve range. A weak signal in a distant room is a coverage problem to address separately.
Wi-Fi 6E: look for a specific 6 GHz need
Wi-Fi 6E adds access to 6 GHz spectrum. To use that band, both router and client must support it. Confirm that the devices you intend to connect actually have 6 GHz capability before paying for a feature they cannot use.
Rank #3
- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.

- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Wi-Fi 7: compare the whole product, not just the label
A Wi-Fi generation label alone does not establish that a router is the right fit. Compare the supported bands, client compatibility, security modes, broadband and wired connections, included equipment, and update policy. Wi-Fi Alliance records show that specific products completed certification testing for listed capabilities; certification is not an independent comparison of speed, coverage, or value in your home.
4. Decide whether you need one router or a mesh system
A single router and a whole-home mesh system are different options to compare when coverage is the issue. A mesh kit uses multiple units; check how many are included and whether the units fit the areas you need to serve. The available product records establish mesh as a product category, but they do not establish a universal floor-area or building-material threshold for choosing mesh over one router. Do not rely on a generic square-foot promise as a guarantee for your layout.

Some routers also integrate broadband access equipment. The Wi-Fi Alliance lists the TP-Link XB432v as a BE7200 dual-band Wi-Fi 7 GPON router and integrated broadband gateway, with 2.4 and 5 GHz capabilities. That record does not establish whether it works with your ISP or local service; check with the provider and consult the exact regional model’s documentation. Its certificate, WFA133601, is dated November 28, 2024. View the XB432v certification record.

5. Check security, compatibility, and ongoing support
Look up the exact model and regional version rather than assuming every router with the same generation label has identical capabilities. Verify its security modes, ISP or gateway requirements, WAN and LAN connections, and manufacturer firmware-update support before buying. WPA3 is a relevant security capability; the cited Deco certification records list WPA3-Personal as well as WPA2-Personal. A certification listing confirms the capabilities recorded for that product, not how long its maker will provide updates. The cited records do not establish support periods.
6. Compare the candidates on the details that affect your home
Once you have two or more plausible options, compare them side by side. Use the manufacturers’ documentation and current retailer information to fill in the model-specific details; the certification records below establish only the listed certification information.
| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Router or mesh kit | Whether it is a single router or whole-home mesh kit, and the number of included units. |
| Bands and clients | Supported bands, including 6 GHz if needed, and whether your important client devices support them. |
| Capacity | Whether Wi-Fi 6 capacity features address a household with many simultaneous connections. |
| Internet and wired connections | WAN and LAN port details, broadband or gateway requirements, and compatibility with your ISP and service type. |
| Security and updates | Supported security modes and the manufacturer’s stated firmware-update support. |
| Purchase terms | Current price, availability, included equipment, and return terms for the exact regional model. |
Certification records can verify that a product completed interoperability testing for listed capabilities, but they do not show how it compares with another router in real-world speed, coverage, or value. Current prices, stock, independent comparative tests, and model-specific support periods are not established by the cited records.
