Samsung refrigerators do not all use the same water filter. Find the full refrigerator model number first, use Samsung’s filter finder to identify a compatible cartridge, then cross-check the code on the filter already installed and the refrigerator’s manual. Do not buy a filter based only on the Samsung name or a similar-looking cartridge.
Find the filter that matches your exact refrigerator
- Get the complete refrigerator model number. Samsung says the model code is generally on a label inside the appliance. Use the full code—not just the series name—in Samsung Canada’s Fridge Water Filter Finder.
- Check the installed cartridge. Read its printed model or part code. This is a useful cross-check, but confirm it against the refrigerator model because a prior owner may have installed the wrong filter.
- Consult the refrigerator manual. The manual can identify the filter type and gives model-specific removal, installation, flushing, and indicator-reset instructions.
- Verify the complete model on the compatibility information. Samsung’s product pages list compatible refrigerator models. Match the entire model code before purchasing; a filter family or partial model match is not enough.
Samsung’s US replacement guide names HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN, and HAFCU1 filter families. Samsung Canada’s guide describes three common internal types and notes that a fourth, external type is used in a few Canadian-market models. How HAF-CIN/EXP and DA29-00020B fit into the picture
HAF-CIN/EXP is one specific internal filter, not a universal Samsung cartridge. Samsung Canada identifies DA29-00020B as its replacement cartridge code and lists a 300-gallon capacity for this product. Its page also names system model DA97-08006A-B. These details apply to this filter only; confirm that your complete refrigerator model appears in the current compatibility list before ordering. Samsung Canada lists NSF 42 certification for chlorine taste and odor reduction and NSF 53 for reduction of cysts, turbidity, lead, asbestos, benzene, carbofuran, p-dichlorobenzene, and mercury. These are the claims shown on that product page; they should not be read as a claim that the cartridge removes every contaminant. Samsung’s US general guide discusses NSF/ANSI standards 42, 53, and 401 for Samsung filters as a group, but that general statement does not establish NSF 401 certification for this specific HAF-CIN/EXP cartridge.

When to replace the filter
Samsung’s US and Canadian support guidance recommends replacing the filter every six months. Actual timing can vary with local water quality and dispenser use; slow water flow can also indicate that replacement is due. Use the refrigerator’s indicator as a reminder, not as a substitute for checking the filter’s condition and model-specific instructions. Samsung says the built-in filter light should be reset each time a new filter is installed.
Replace the cartridge and reset the reminder
Exact steps depend on the filter family and refrigerator controls. Before starting, confirm that the replacement is compatible and consult the appliance manual. Samsung’s general sequence is:

- Shut off the water supply to the refrigerator and relieve pressure by dispensing water.
- Remove the old filter. For HAF-CIN and HAF-QIN, turn the cartridge to unlock it, then pull it out. Follow the manual for other filter types, including external filters.
- Prepare and install the new cartridge. Remove its protective cap. HAF-CIN and HAF-QIN cartridges use a turn-to-lock fitting: insert the filter and turn it clockwise until locked, with the lock mark aligned. HAFCU1 has a different notch-and-arrow alignment; do not use the HAF-CIN/HAF-QIN method in place of its instructions.
- Flush the system. Follow the refrigerator manual and the filter instructions for the required amount of water. Samsung Canada’s replacement guide instructs users to dispense about seven minutes—roughly 10–12 large glasses—and discard that water after replacement. Treat that as the Canadian guide’s instruction, not a universal quantity for every model or market.
- Reset the filter indicator. Use the reset method for your refrigerator’s control panel. Samsung lists different methods for standard controls and Family Hub models, so follow the manual for your model rather than assuming a single button sequence.
Should you use a third-party filter?
Samsung’s manufacturer guidance warns that third-party filters may leak or damage the refrigerator and recommends genuine Samsung filters in its Canadian guide. That is Samsung’s position; the sources cited here do not provide independent comparative testing of aftermarket brands, so they do not establish that every third-party cartridge is unsafe or rank brands by performance. If choosing a non-Samsung cartridge, verify exact model compatibility and the seller’s certification documentation rather than relying on appearance or a broad compatibility claim.
