Choose washer capacity by matching the machine to your usual laundry volume and the largest items you wash—not household size alone. Use people-per-household estimates to narrow the options, then check the exact model’s loading guidance, dimensions, installation requirements, and efficiency information.

How much capacity do you need?

Washer capacity is the volume of the drum, usually stated in cubic feet in U.S. product listings. Household size offers a rough starting point, but it does not capture how often you wash, what you wash, or whether you prefer fewer, larger loads.

Whirlpool’s general guide suggests these ranges, while noting that there is no industry standard for “small,” “medium,” or “large” capacity:

Whirlpool capacity band Illustrative household size
1.5–3.4 cubic feet One or two people
3.5–4.4 cubic feet Two or three people
4.5 cubic feet or more Three or more people

Whirlpool’s chart is manufacturer shopping guidance, not a universal sizing rule. Its categories overlap for households of two and three, which is a reminder that headcount alone cannot settle the choice. Another Whirlpool guide describes common standard capacities as about 3.5–5 cubic feet, so labels and ranges can vary by guide and product lineup.

Adjust for your laundry routine

Think through your actual week before choosing a band. Count loads, consider whether clothes are unusually bulky or heavily soiled, and decide whether you want to wash more frequently or save laundry for fewer larger loads. Whirlpool lists more than three household members, children who play sports, more than seven loads per week, or a desire to reduce load count when space permits as reasons to consider a large washer. These are examples from the manufacturer, not thresholds that apply to every home.

  • Estimate how many loads you run in a typical week.
  • Account for sports uniforms, work clothes, towels, bedding, and other recurring heavy laundry.
  • Consider whether your routine favors frequent smaller loads or fewer larger ones.

Let your largest regular item set a practical minimum

Bulky items can matter more than the number of people in your home. Consumer Reports’ buying guide, updated May 26, 2026, says a washer needs at least 4.5 cubic feet to handle a king-size comforter. Treat that as a useful range to investigate, not a guarantee that every king comforter will fit every washer: construction, thickness, and the specific machine’s design matter. Check the model’s product details and manual for loading guidance.

Towels can help make capacity examples tangible, but they are not a precise conversion from drum size to everyday clothing loads. Consumer Reports gives an example of about six thick, full-sized bath towels in a compact washer rated at 2.7 cubic feet or less, compared with 17 towels in an extra-large 6.2-cubic-foot washer. Whirlpool publishes different towel ranges and notes that towel size varies, so use examples like these only as illustrations—not as a promise about your towels or a particular model.

Use capacity bands to narrow the search, then compare models

Once you have a rough capacity range, compare the machines that could handle your routine. Do not choose solely by a household-size label or the largest cubic-foot figure. Look at the actual capacity stated for each model and whether its loading guidance accommodates your largest recurring items.

What to compare What to check
Drum capacity The exact capacity stated in the model’s specifications.
Largest routine load Whether the manufacturer’s product details or manual support your bulky items.
Typical laundry How well the machine suits your usual load sizes and weekly routine.
Physical fit Exterior dimensions, access for loading, delivery route, and installation clearances.
Efficiency Current water- and energy-efficiency information for the specific model.

Capacity alone does not show that a washer will clean better or use less water or energy. ENERGY STAR defines efficiency factors in relation to washer capacity; compare current certified information for the exact models rather than inferring performance from cubic feet. ENERGY STAR’s clothes-washer criteria explain the program’s measures.

Will the washer fit your laundry space?

Drum capacity and exterior size are related imperfectly: washers with different capacities can have similar outside dimensions. Before settling on a model, measure the space and the route the appliance must travel to reach it. Check the washer’s height, width, and depth, as well as door or lid movement, hose connections, required clearances, and any ventilation or service-access needs.

  • [Product Usage Tips] 1. Don't overload. Overload may cause the motor to turn on overheating protection. 2. Balance the spinner to prevent it from losing balance, hitting the inner walls, stopping work. 3. If the machine doesn’t drain, check that the water hose is not clogged or bent, which may prevent the spinner from working properly. 4. Make sure the drain height is less than 45 inches.
  1. Measure the installation area. Record usable height, width, and depth, including obstacles such as nearby cabinets or walls.
  2. Check access and delivery. Measure doorways, hallways, turns, and stairs along the delivery path; confirm the appliance can be maneuvered into place.
  3. Review the model’s installation instructions. Follow the exact manual for connection space, clearances, and access requirements. Whirlpool provides example installation and access guidance, but its figures do not replace the selected model’s instructions.
  4. Confirm loading clearance. Make sure a front-load door can open or a top-load lid can lift without obstruction.

Whirlpool’s installation guidance describes connection and access clearances, but requirements vary by model. Use the selected washer’s installation manual as the authority for its setup.

A practical way to make the final choice

  1. Start with household size to identify a rough capacity band, not a fixed answer.
  2. Describe your laundry routine by weekly loads, heavy or bulky clothing, and whether you want fewer loads.
  3. Identify the largest item you wash regularly and check the candidate washer’s specific loading guidance.
  4. Compare models on stated drum capacity, routine-load suitability, installation fit, and current efficiency information.
  5. Verify the entire installation—including dimensions, delivery path, clearances, connections, and access—before buying.
