If you want the classic real-time strategy experience—building a base, expanding your forces, and commanding armies—start with Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Definitive Edition. Relic Entertainment’s Steam listing says it includes the original game and all expansions in one package, with four campaigns, nine factions, and more than 100 maps. If you would rather develop a smaller squad and focus on tactical missions and co-op, choose Dawn of War II instead.

| Squad development, tactical combat, campaign progression, and co-op | Dawn of War II | Its official materials emphasize squad development and tactical combat; the Retribution manual documents co-op campaign play and Last Stand cooperative survival. View the Steam listing. |
| Interested in the next series entry | Wait for Dawn of War IV to release and be reviewed | The official site lists a December 3, 2026 release date. Its feature descriptions are announcements, not evidence from a released game. Visit the official site. |
Why the Definitive Edition fits a first classic-RTS choice
The Definitive Edition is the clearest single-package route into the original Dawn of War. Relic’s listing says it contains the original game and all expansions, and names four campaigns, nine factions, and more than 100 maps. These are package counts stated by the publisher’s 2025 product listing, not independent measurements.
The same listing describes updates including a 64-bit version, improved camera, modern widescreen layout, integrated Mod Manager, pathfinding changes, and visual updates. It was released on August 14, 2025. Those details may help explain what is included and updated, but they do not establish that the game is objectively easier to learn than other RTS games.

When Dawn of War II is a better fit
Choose Dawn of War II if your interest is in developing and deploying squads rather than starting with the classic base-building package. The official game description foregrounds squad development and tactical combat. The Retribution manual also documents campaign loadout and deployment screens, co-op campaign play, and Last Stand, a cooperative survival mode. The official Steam listing is a useful starting point for its current product details.
