Choose a USB-C charger by your iPhone model and charging method—not by the largest wattage on the box. For wired fast charging, Apple’s general guidance is 20 W or higher for iPhone 12 and later, while its model-specific guidance calls for 40 W or higher for iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air. The adapter should support USB Power Delivery (USB-PD).
Wired USB-C charger wattage by iPhone model
Apple’s general fast-charge guidance says iPhone 8 or later can fast charge, and specifies a 20 W-or-higher adapter for iPhone 12 and later. That is a useful baseline, but not the fastest-charge threshold Apple gives for every recent model. Apple calls for a 40 W-or-higher adapter for fast charging iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max.
| iPhone or use case | Apple’s stated wired guidance | What to choose |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 8 or later, general fast-charge guidance | Up to 50% in around 30 minutes; Apple notes that adapter, settings, usage, and environmental conditions affect charging time. | Use a compatible USB-C adapter and the appropriate cable. For iPhone 12 and later, Apple specifies 20 W or higher as the general threshold. |
| iPhone 12 and later, general threshold | 20 W or higher for fast charging. | A USB-C PD adapter rated at least 20 W is a practical choice unless Apple gives a higher model-specific threshold. |
| iPhone 17e | Up to 50% in 30 minutes with a 20 W adapter or higher. Apple says its iPhone 17e test used pre-production units in January 2026. | Choose a compatible 20 W-or-higher USB-C PD adapter for Apple’s stated fast-charge example. |
| iPhone Air | Up to 50% in 30 minutes with a 20 W adapter or higher; Apple’s adapter guidance also lists 40 W or higher for fast charging. | For Apple’s model-specific fast-charge guidance, choose 40 W or higher. |
| iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max | Up to 50% in around 20 minutes with a 40 W adapter or higher. | Choose a compatible 40 W-or-higher USB-C PD adapter. |
The iPhone Air guidance appears in two different contexts: Apple’s fast-charge page gives a 20 W example for reaching up to 50% in 30 minutes, while its adapter guide specifies 40 W or higher for fast charging. If you want to meet the model-specific adapter guidance, use 40 W or higher rather than treating the 20 W example as a universal fastest-charge threshold. Charging-time figures are Apple’s stated examples, not a guarantee for every charging session.

Wattage alone is not enough. Apple says a comparable third-party USB-C power adapter for fast charging should support USB Power Delivery (USB-PD). For iPhone 15 or later, use a USB-C cable; for an earlier iPhone with a Lightning connector, use a USB-C-to-Lightning cable for the fast-charge setup Apple describes.

- What You Get: Anker Charger (2-Port, 20W), 2-pack 5 ft USB-C to USB-C cable, welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- USB-C iPhone: iPhone 15 and later have a USB-C connector. Apple says they can charge with a USB-C cable and a standards-compliant USB-C adapter, including one supporting USB Power Delivery. The included cable supports charging.
- Lightning iPhone: Use a USB-C-to-Lightning cable with the USB-C adapter for Apple’s fast-charge setup.
- Third-party adapter: Check that the product explicitly supports USB-PD and can provide the wattage appropriate to your model.
Apple’s fast-charge page also describes an Apple USB-C adapter rated 18 W or greater, or a comparable third-party USB-C adapter supporting USB-PD. That broad setup guidance does not replace the separate 20 W general threshold for iPhone 12 and later or the 40 W model-specific guidance for the listed iPhone 17 models and iPhone Air.
Why a higher-wattage adapter does not automatically charge faster
An adapter’s wattage rating describes its available output capacity; it does not mean the iPhone draws that amount throughout a charge. Use Apple’s threshold for your model as the decision point. Buying a much higher-rated adapter solely to speed up an iPhone is not supported by the available model-specific guidance.

A higher-capacity USB-C PD adapter can still make sense if you also charge another device, such as a tablet or laptop. In that case, check the adapter’s output specifications and ports for those devices as well; the iPhone still uses only what it can negotiate and accept.

Do not apply the wired USB-C threshold directly to wireless charging. For fast MagSafe charging, Apple specifies a MagSafe Charger with a 30 W-or-greater USB-C adapter for iPhone 16 or later. For iPhone 15 and earlier, Apple says MagSafe charging is up to 15 W with a MagSafe Charger and a 20 W-or-greater adapter.

How to choose in practice
- Identify your iPhone model. Find the model in Settings or check Apple’s model information; then use the corresponding row above rather than assuming one wattage fits every iPhone.
- Decide whether you mean wired or MagSafe. Wired fast charging uses the USB-C PD and cable guidance; MagSafe has its own adapter thresholds.
- Match the adapter rating to Apple’s guidance. For many iPhones, 20 W USB-C PD is a useful category. For iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air, Apple’s model-specific guidance says 40 W or higher.
- Confirm the cable and protocol. Pair USB-PD with USB-C-to-USB-C for iPhone 15 and later, or USB-C-to-Lightning for earlier Lightning models.
- Account for other devices only if needed. If one charger must power a laptop or tablet too, select its total output and port configuration for those devices without assuming the iPhone will use the full rating.
Apple’s 40 W adapter is an example, not a requirement
Apple names its 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max as one compatible option. Apple’s guide lists 40 W continuous sustained power and 60 W maximum output for that adapter; those are adapter specifications, not a claim that an iPhone draws 60 W. A compatible third-party USB-C PD adapter can also be used, provided it meets the applicable output guidance.
Charging-time caveats
Apple says fast charging may not work in conditions that are too cold or too hot. It also says charging times vary with the adapter, settings, usage, and environmental conditions, so treat its “up to” percentages and times as conditional examples rather than a promise for every session. Apple’s fast-charge page was published April 2, 2026; its USB-C connector support page was updated September 24, 2026.
