Start with the distance from your usual seated eye position to the screen, then choose a screen size that matches how immersive you want viewing to feel. For a general-purpose TV, a roughly 30-degree viewing angle is a useful starting point; for a more cinematic feel, consider about 40 degrees. Treat either as a guide, not a rule: room layout, comfort, and the TV’s actual external dimensions matter too.
Measure your viewing distance first
Measure from where your eyes are when seated normally to the screen’s front surface. Do not use the room’s total length: the distance between the TV and your actual viewing position is what matters. If more than one seat is used regularly, measure from the seat that will be used most or compare the main seats separately.
Screen size is measured diagonally, but the viewing-distance formulas estimate a diagonal size or a viewing angle. Neither tells you whether the TV’s full width and height will fit your wall or furniture.

Choose a viewing experience, then estimate a size
Published recommendations differ because they answer slightly different questions. RTINGS uses viewing angle to describe mixed-use, cinema-like, and immersive viewing. LG and Samsung offer rules around a 1.2 multiplier, while Sony Support gives a minimum distance intended to make 4K pixels hard to distinguish. These are reference points, not competing measurements of one universal ideal.

Mixed daily viewing
RTINGS recommends a field of view of about 30 degrees for mixed use and estimates a corresponding screen size by dividing viewing distance in inches by 1.6. Its guidance also describes 30–40 degrees as a useful balancing range. This is a practical place to start if the TV will be used for a variety of everyday content rather than primarily for a cinema-like experience. See the RTINGS size-to-distance explanation.
Cinema-like viewing
For a more enveloping picture, LG suggests dividing viewing distance in inches by 1.2 to estimate a TV size for a 40-degree viewing angle. LG gives approximately 2.1–2.3 meters as a suitable distance for a 75-inch TV. Samsung Canada presents the inverse general-distance rule: multiply the TV’s diagonal size in inches by 1.2 to estimate distance, or multiply distance in meters by 25 for an approximate screen size. These are cinema-oriented starting points, not requirements for casual viewing. See the LG size guide and Samsung Canada’s size and distance guide.

Minimum distance for 4K pixel visibility
Sony Support recommends a minimum 4K viewing distance of 1.5 times the screen’s vertical height. For example, it lists approximately 3.94 feet for a 65-inch TV and 4.59 feet for a 75-inch TV. This is much closer than a typical mixed-use or cinema target because it addresses when pixels become difficult to distinguish, not the distance that gives every viewer the most comfortable or balanced experience. Sony says the distance can be adjusted for preference and room layout. Its article was last modified January 17, 2025: Sony Support’s recommended viewing distance.
A separate screen-height guideline
Sony Electronics offers another general selection heuristic: TV height should be about two-thirds of the distance between the TV and viewing position. This is a proportional screen-height guideline, not the same as Sony Support’s minimum-distance advice for 4K pixel visibility. See Sony Electronics’ TV selection guide.

Use a 55-inch TV to compare the viewing angles
RTINGS’ published distances for a 55-inch TV show how much the recommendation changes with the viewing experience. The figures below are guide values for the stated angles, not measurements of one universal optimum. RTINGS updated its guide on June 3, 2026.
| Intended experience | Viewing angle | Distance for a 55-inch TV |
|---|---|---|
| Mixed use | 30° | 7 ft 5 in (2.27 m) |
| Cinema | 40° | 5 ft 6 in (1.67 m) |
| Immersive | 62° | 3 ft 4 in (1.00 m) |
At 7 feet, RTINGS says sizes from 50 to 115 inches can be considered depending on how immersive a viewer wants the picture to feel. That broad range illustrates why distance alone cannot select a size: the intended viewing angle and personal comfort also matter.

Follow a practical size-selection process
- Measure the seat-to-screen distance. Use your normal seated eye position and measure to the screen, rather than estimating from the room’s overall dimensions.
- Decide how you watch. Choose a mixed-use starting point for everyday viewing, or a wider-angle target if films and immersion are priorities.
- Estimate a candidate size. Apply the matching viewing-angle or distance reference above. Do not treat Sony Support’s minimum pixel-visibility distance as a mixed-use recommendation.
- Compare nearby available sizes. Look up the exact model’s external width and height, including its bezel, stand or other dimensions relevant to your setup. Diagonal size is not the same as the TV’s full footprint. RTINGS and Samsung both advise checking manufacturer dimensions before buying.
- Preview the footprint. Mark the proposed screen outline on the wall with painter’s tape and assess it from your usual seat. RTINGS recommends this as a way to compare sizes in place.
- Choose between sizes that fit. Consider viewing distance, desired immersion, room layout, viewing habits, and budget. Samsung notes that there is no single size that is always better.
How resolution affects distance and comfort
Higher resolution can make it possible to sit closer while retaining visible detail, but it does not make every large screen comfortable at every distance. Sony Support’s 4K guidance is specifically about the distance at which pixels become hard to distinguish; Samsung says higher-resolution sets allow closer viewing while preserving clear detail. For ordinary size selection, RTINGS recommends treating field of view as the main sizing consideration and using resolution to think about how close you can sit before pixels become noticeable.
RTINGS’ chart indicates that a viewer watching a 65-inch TV from about 4 feet can process 4K detail, while the difference from 1080p may be appreciated at distances up to about 8.5 feet. Those are chart-based examples, not guarantees for every viewer or source. Content quality and compression also affect perceived image quality; a larger display will not make a low-quality source look cleaner.

When should you choose the larger or smaller option?
- Lean larger if the screen outline looks comfortable from your normal seat and you want a wider, more cinematic field of view.
- Lean smaller if the larger outline overwhelms the room or feels uncomfortable to scan during everyday viewing.
- Recheck the setup if a candidate size fits the wall but not the entertainment center, or if the main seating position is closer or farther away than expected.
