Measure your viewing distance first, then use it to estimate a screen size: for mixed viewing, divide the distance in inches by 1.6. Treat the result as a starting point, not a rule. Check the TV’s full dimensions against your wall or cabinet, then choose a display type and model based on lighting, seating angles, and the content you watch.
What size TV should you get for your room?
RTINGS recommends a field of view of about 30 degrees for mixed use and gives a quick estimate: divide the distance from your eyes to the screen, in inches, by 1.6 to get an approximate screen diagonal. This is a planning guide, not a universal comfort standard; viewing habits, room layout, budget, and personal preference all matter. RTINGS’ TV size and distance guide was updated June 3, 2026.
- Measure from where your eyes will be when seated to the screen—not from the back of the sofa to the wall.
- Convert that distance to inches and divide by 1.6 for a rough diagonal estimate.
- Compare nearby available screen sizes, then check the actual model dimensions before buying.
For example, RTINGS lists about 8 feet 10 inches as the mixed-use viewing distance for a 65-inch screen at approximately 30 degrees. That is a useful reference point, not a requirement that every viewer sit at precisely that distance.

Screen size describes the diagonal, not the TV’s full width or height. Bezel dimensions, stand design, and overall measurements vary by model, so consult the manufacturer’s complete specification. Confirm the available wall or cabinet width and height, and allow for the stand or mounting arrangement you plan to use. RTINGS suggests marking candidate screen outlines on the wall with painter’s tape to visualize how they will fit.

OLED or QLED: which display type fits your room?
OLED and QLED describe different display approaches, but neither label alone guarantees that a particular TV will perform best in your room. Compare the specific models’ measured performance and screen finish, especially if your room is bright or has distracting reflections.

For a bright room, compare measured brightness in the kinds of scenes you watch and check how the screen handles reflections; the available guidance does not establish a universal brightness threshold for every room. For movie watching in a dark room, prioritize dark-scene contrast. For a wide seating arrangement, give viewing-angle performance more weight than you would for one centered seat. How does seating position affect the picture?
If several people sit across a wide sofa or in different parts of the room, viewers at the sides may see changes in picture accuracy depending on the panel. RTINGS reports that OLED TVs have very wide viewing angles. Among LCD types, IPS generally maintains accuracy better off-axis than VA, though IPS has lower contrast. Check model-level viewing-angle performance where possible: panel categories describe tendencies, not identical results across all TVs.
Does 4K or 8K resolution change the size you should choose?
Resolution is only one part of perceived detail. Screen size and viewing distance determine how much extra detail a viewer can notice. RTINGS’ resolution guide says that, on a 65-inch TV, sitting within about four feet is generally needed to notice 8K detail compared with 4K. That is the guide’s analysis, not a guarantee for every viewer or eyesight.
