Start with what you listen to, where you sit, the TV connections you have, and the space available for speakers. A soundbar is a compact, TV-focused choice; separate speakers suit stereo or surround listening when you can place them well. There is no reliable room-size-to-wattage formula here, so compare fit and layout rather than choosing by a wattage rule.
Choose a system around how you use the room
Dolby describes home-theater options ranging from a TV and soundbar to multichannel systems for different floor plans and budgets. The right shape depends less on a room label than on what you want to hear and where equipment can go.
- Mostly TV and dialogue: A soundbar keeps the setup compact and typically avoids placing several separate speakers around the room.
- Music or stereo listening: Separate left and right speakers can suit a dedicated listening position, provided you have room to place them on stands or shelves without blocking their sound path.
- Surround effects: Consider additional channels only if the room can accommodate their placement and wiring. Dolby’s guidance includes compact Atmos configurations for small rooms, so a more elaborate layout is not automatically required.
Dolby’s speaker setup guide puts the principle plainly: “Choosing the right layout for your room size will get you the best Dolby Atmos sound without having to spend more than you need to.”

Check where speakers can actually go
Before comparing features, mark the main listening seat and identify possible speaker positions. Dolby recommends placing main speakers around seated ear height—about 3.9 feet is one example—and using stands if needed. That measurement is a placement example, not a universal requirement for every seat or room.
#1 Best Overall
- 2 x AUX INPUT - Convenient connection to any device that has a 3.5mm headphone output or dual RCA output. Connect to two devices via AUX at the same time, no plugging and switching needed.
- STUDIO SOUND QUALITY - Natural sound reproduction from 13mm silk dome tweeter and 4 inch full range unit
- REMOTE CONTROL - Adjust volume at your figure tips. Bass and treble control located on the side of main speaker.
- CLASSIC WOOD FINISH - High quality MDF wood build finished with wood effect vinyl serves as a great compliment to any home decor.
- SIDE PANEL CONTROLS - Use the side panel knobs to adjust the EQ to your liking. The controls are located on the active/powered speaker.
For separate left and right speakers
- Angle the speakers toward the listening position; the useful amount of toe-in varies with the room and the speakers.
- Bookshelves can work if they do not block the sound path. A center speaker intended to sit close to the TV should not be tucked onto a bookshelf.
- Hard walls, windows, and floors can create unwanted reflections. Adjust placement and listen rather than assuming a single position will work in every room.
For upward-firing speakers and subwoofers
- Keep the ceiling path above upward-firing height speakers clear.
- Avoid placing a subwoofer on a bookshelf: vibration can make the sound boomy.
- A subwoofer can provide deep bass and let you use smaller, easier-to-place main speakers, but it is an option to match to your listening needs—not a mandatory part of every setup.
Some soundbars, AV receivers, and subwoofers offer room-calibration modes, which Dolby says can help. For a substantial fixed installation, professional calibration is an option; it is not a prerequisite for a basic setup. See Dolby’s speaker setup guidance.
Verify the TV connection before buying
The available connection depends on the ports on both the TV and speaker. Sony India’s guide lists HDMI ARC as a preferred connection when compatible, with optical digital audio or analog connections as alternatives where both devices support them. Do not assume that every HDMI port supports ARC or eARC: check the port labels and the manuals for your exact models.

- Look at the TV’s rear or side panel and identify its audio output ports.
- Check the soundbar or receiver’s input ports for a matching connection.
- Consult both manuals for supported formats and model-specific setup steps.

Measure the space and compare the real trade-offs
A soundbar that fits on paper can still obscure the screen, remote sensor, or TV controls once installed. Yamaha advises checking soundbar dimensions and placement; Dolby’s setup guidance also makes clear that separate speakers need a usable path to the listening position.

| Choice | Space and placement | Connection and setup | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soundbar | Check width, height, depth, and clearance below or around the TV. | Connect to a compatible TV audio output; installation is generally more compact than a multi-speaker layout. | TV-focused listening where floor or shelf space is limited. |
| Separate stereo speakers | Allow space for left and right speakers on stands or shelves, with an unobstructed sound path. | Check whether the speakers need a separate amplifier and plan for their cables. | Music or stereo listening when the room permits deliberate placement. |
| Multichannel or Atmos setup | Requires suitable positions for added speakers and, where applicable, a clear path for upward-firing units. | More placement and wiring decisions than a simple TV-and-soundbar setup. | Surround effects when the layout and installation effort are practical. |

- Decide whether TV dialogue, music, or surround effects matter most.
- Measure the TV stand, shelf, or wall area and confirm the unit will not block the screen or remote sensor.
- Map where separate speakers could sit and whether their sound paths would be unobstructed.
- Identify the TV’s actual audio output and confirm a matching input on the speaker system.
- Check whether separate speakers require an amplifier, and whether a subwoofer or extra channels can be accommodated.
- Move speakers and listen after installation; placement can be adjusted for the room rather than treated as fixed by a generic diagram.
