Choose a soundbar by checking three things before you buy: whether it physically fits your TV area, whether your TV and source devices can send audio to it, and whether its speaker design suits your room and seats. If you want Dolby Atmos, confirm that the entire signal path supports it—not just the soundbar.
Start with fit and placement
Measure the space where the bar will sit, including the usable width and height beneath the screen. Check the soundbar’s dimensions against the TV stand, cabinet opening, TV pedestal and any wall mount. There is no universal soundbar width or room-size rule established by the sources cited here, so use the measurements for your own setup.
Dolby recommends placing a soundbar below the television at approximately ear level, aimed toward seats that face the TV. Keep the front of the bar unobstructed. For models with upward- or side-firing speakers, furniture and nearby walls can affect the sound paths and reflections those designs rely on. Dolby’s setup guide suggests a minimum listener distance of 4 to 5 feet (1.2 to 1.5 meters) for an ideal playback experience; treat this as guidance for the cited setup, not a universal requirement for every soundbar or room. Check how the soundbar will connect
Look at the ports on both the TV and soundbar, then check the manuals for the exact models. HDMI ARC or eARC can carry TV audio to a soundbar over one cable when both devices support the relevant connection. If the TV does not have ARC/eARC, HDMI passthrough may be an option: connect the source device to an HDMI input on the soundbar, then connect the soundbar’s HDMI output to the TV. Use an appropriate high-speed HDMI cable for the connection you choose. Check whether your existing cable meets the devices’ requirements before buying another one.
Verify the full audio path before paying for Atmos
An Atmos label on a soundbar alone does not guarantee Atmos playback. The content or source device, the TV or passthrough route, and the soundbar all need to support the format and work together. Check each device’s documentation for supported audio formats and passthrough capabilities; ARC/eARC support is relevant to TV-connected setups, but the exact capabilities depend on the models and route. If your devices or content do not support the formats you want, prioritize the features they can actually use. A general soundbar may be a better fit than paying extra for Atmos capability your setup cannot deliver.

Match the speaker configuration to your room
Compare a single bar with systems that add a subwoofer or rear speakers according to your available space, seating and listening goals. Add-ons are model-dependent: verify that a particular soundbar supports the speakers or subwoofer you are considering. Dolby’s guidance does not rank these configurations or identify one as best for a particular room.

- Consider whether the bar can face your main seats without being blocked by furniture.
- For upward- or side-firing designs, consider whether the room provides clear paths and nearby surfaces for the effects to work with.

Use this pre-purchase checklist
- Measure the soundbar location and compare it with the bar’s width and height.
- Check the TV and soundbar manuals for matching ARC/eARC support, or confirm that HDMI passthrough works for your setup.
- For Atmos or another desired format, verify support from the source, TV or passthrough route, and soundbar.
- Assess the bar’s position relative to the seats, furniture and room surfaces.
- Check whether the system’s subwoofer or rear speakers are included, optional, and compatible with the exact model.
- Inspect your HDMI cable and device guidance before purchasing a replacement.
