Start by confirming that a watch works with your phone; then narrow the choice by the activities you track, how often you are willing to charge it, and the total cost. Apple Watch is the natural place for iPhone owners to start, while Android users should check for phone-brand restrictions. If you want one watch for either platform, or put fitness tracking and battery life ahead of deep phone integration, compare cross-platform options such as Amazfit and Garmin.
Which smartwatch will work with my phone?
Compatibility is the first filter, not a feature to check after choosing a watch. Some watches require a particular phone platform, and some Android-oriented models reserve certain features for phones from a specific brand. Check the exact watch’s current phone and operating-system requirements before buying; compatibility can differ by model and software version.
| Phone situation | Candidate direction | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone | Apple Watch. Tom’s Guide’s September 21, 2026 guide lists Apple Watch Series 12 for iPhone users. | Current iPhone and iOS requirements for the exact model. |
| Android | Google Pixel Watch 4 is an Android-oriented option listed by Tom’s Guide. | Whether any desired functions require a particular phone brand, plus current Android and app requirements. |
| Either iPhone or Android | Tom’s Guide lists Amazfit Active 3 Premium as compatible with both platforms. | Compatibility for your phone and the specific functions you need; the guide describes it as more fitness-focused and less feature-rich as a smartwatch than Apple or Google alternatives. |
These are candidate directions, not a guarantee that every feature works on every compatible phone. Confirm regional and software eligibility for any health or safety function that matters to you.

Choose around the activity you actually do. A watch designed for general wellness and gym use may be a better fit than a running watch loaded with training metrics you will not use. How should I compare battery life?
Compare estimates as a rough guide to charging frequency, not as a controlled ranking. Manufacturers and reviewers may use different settings and test conditions, and your use of GPS, notifications, display features, and other functions can change battery life.
| Model | Published figure | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Garmin vívoactive 6 | Up to 11 days in smartwatch mode | Garmin manufacturer estimate in its 2026 guide; actual battery life varies with settings and usage. |
| Garmin Forerunner 70 | Up to 13 days in smartwatch mode | Garmin manufacturer estimate in its 2026 guide; actual battery life varies with settings and usage. |
| Amazfit Active 3 Premium | 12 days claimed; about eight days in testing | Amazfit’s claim and Tom’s Guide’s 2026 test result, respectively. They are different kinds of evidence and should not be treated as equivalent. |
| Apple Watch Series 12 | 24 hours | Tom’s Guide’s 2026 guide lists this figure; it is not a controlled comparison with the other figures here. |
For a meaningful personal comparison, look for estimates in the mode you will actually use, including GPS workouts if relevant. Then check independent testing for the exact model and usage pattern where available; the figures above do not come from one shared test.

How much should I spend, and are there subscription costs?
Set a budget for ownership, not just the watch. Include the purchase price, any cellular-plan charges if you choose a cellular model, and recurring subscriptions tied to features you want. Prices and plans vary, so verify them when you buy.
Tom’s Guide characterizes the Amazfit Active 3 Premium as around half the price of Apple or Google flagship watches, but that is a guide’s broad price comparison, not a fixed current quote. The guide says its features are free apart from an optional sleep-focused Zepp Aura service. Check the current model price and subscription terms rather than assuming either applies unchanged.
For any candidate, ask whether a subscription is required for the feature you care about or merely offered as an extra. Also confirm the exact generation, case size, connectivity configuration, and current price: similarly named models or listings may not have the same capabilities.
What should I check before buying?
- Confirm phone support. Check the exact watch’s current phone, operating-system, and app requirements.
- Choose your main use. Decide whether you mainly want everyday notifications, wellness and gym tracking, beginner running support, or advanced training features.
- Match features to your activities. Verify the GPS, sport modes, and metrics you will use instead of paying for a long feature list.
- Estimate your charging routine. Compare qualified battery estimates and look for results that reflect your likely settings and workout use.
- Check the wearing experience. Compare case size, display, and comfort, especially if you plan to wear the watch overnight for sleep tracking.
- Calculate total cost. Add the watch price, potential cellular-plan charges, and any subscription you actually need.
- Verify regional feature availability. Confirm health and safety functions for your region, phone, and software version.
Model names, compatibility, prices, and feature eligibility can change. The options and figures here reflect guidance available in 2026, not a model-by-model laboratory comparison.
