Choose a phone for your needs first; judge the sale listing second. Set a budget that includes delivery, rank the features you need, check the exact model against your carrier, then compare the full checkout cost, seller, return terms, and warranty. A discount alone does not show whether a deal is worthwhile.
1. Set your budget and priorities before comparing phones
Decide what matters most and separate must-haves from optional features. The Federal Trade Commission recommends setting priorities before shopping and including delivery costs in your budget. Its online shopping guidance also advises checking the full cost and the seller’s terms.
- Budget: Set a ceiling for the total purchase, not just the advertised phone price.
- Camera: Consider the kinds of photos and video you take rather than assuming a headline camera specification guarantees better results.
- Display: Think about screen size and viewing needs.
- Storage: Estimate how much room you need for apps, photos, video, and other files.
- Battery: Consider your typical use and how often you can charge. Do not treat a manufacturer’s or seller’s battery claim as a guarantee of your own experience.
Use these priorities to narrow the options. There is no single best phone for every buyer, and a lower sale price does not compensate for a phone that misses a must-have.

2. Check whether the exact model works with your carrier
Before comparing prices, confirm that the exact phone model and version you are considering supports your intended carrier and network. Compatibility can vary by model or regional version, so a broad product name or a claim that a phone is “unlocked” is not enough on its own.

Verizon’s cell phone buyer’s guide includes network-generation compatibility among the factors to consider alongside hardware, camera, and display. Because that is Verizon guidance, check directly with your own carrier for the device you plan to buy; do not generalize Verizon compatibility information to other carriers or countries.
3. Compare the actual deal, not just the discount
Compare the same exact model and storage configuration across sellers. Record the condition and seller for each listing, then calculate the amount you would actually pay. Include shipping, handling, delivery, taxes, and other fees; also check whether the advertised price requires a condition such as a particular payment method or trade-in.

Read the sale-specific terms before deciding. Clearance or sale items may have different return rules. Check whether a price match or later price adjustment is available, and what conditions apply. The FTC’s online shopping guidance recommends checking costs and fine print rather than relying on the listed price alone.

4. Assess the seller and listing
Make sure you know who is selling the phone, especially on a marketplace where the platform and the seller may be different businesses. Check seller contact information, reputation, marketplace protections, the item description, and whether photos show the actual device. For a used phone, look for specific condition details rather than relying on a broad label such as “good.”

The FTC advises caution when an expensive item is offered at an unusually low price: “If a seller lists an expensive item for a very low price, it might be fake.” Review the FTC guidance on buying from an online marketplace for advice on seller checks, payment, and keeping records. Check whether the platform’s protection applies to this specific seller and item; avoid moving payment outside the marketplace’s system.
5. Understand returns, warranty, and repair options
Before paying, read the return and refund policy for the particular listing. Note the return deadline, who pays return shipping, whether a restocking fee applies, and any exclusions for sale or open-box items. Save the listing, seller communications, receipt, and relevant policy text in case you need to refer to them later.

Read the written warranty before purchase, not just a short warranty summary on the product page. Compare its duration, coverage, exclusions, claim process, shipping responsibilities, and remedy: repair, replacement, or refund. Check who handles a claim—the manufacturer, seller, or another provider. - Activation Lock: Confirm the phone is not tied to someone else’s Apple Account and can be set up by you.
- Carrier Lock: In Settings, open General > About and check Carrier Lock. Apple says “No SIM restrictions” indicates an unlocked iPhone; still confirm that the exact device works with your carrier.
- Battery: Check battery condition and whether it charges. Apple’s guidance is: “If the battery won’t charge, don’t buy the iPhone.”
7. Use a final checkout checklist
- Confirm the listing is for your chosen model, storage configuration, and condition.
- Verify the exact model and version with your intended carrier.
- Add shipping, handling, tax, and fees to the phone price; confirm any conditions attached to the advertised price.
- Review the seller, actual-item photos, marketplace protection, and payment method.
- Read the return deadline, refund terms, shipping obligations, and restocking fee.
- Save the written warranty and identify who handles claims and related shipping.
- If it is a pre-owned iPhone, check Activation Lock, Carrier Lock, and battery condition before committing.
- Keep copies of the listing, policies, seller messages, and receipt.
