There is no single best screw for every license plate. The right fastener depends on how your vehicle mounts its plate, how thick the plate, holder or frame is, and whether you want a security drive. For most drivers the practical answer is to match the thread and length to what the vehicle already uses, add anti-theft screws if you want to make casual removal harder, and choose stainless steel if corrosion resistance is a priority.
Start with fit, not the product
A screw that is too short will not hold the plate securely. One that is too long can bottom out before it seats, or push against the bumper or body. A plate holder or frame adds thickness to the stack, so the screw has to pass through every layer and still engage the vehicle’s hole or nut. Because of this, a kit that works on one car may be wrong for another, even when both use similar-looking plates.
Before you buy anything, check the following on the vehicle itself:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Existing fastener: Note the head type, diameter and length of the screw you are replacing. If it is missing, check the mounting holes and any nut, insert or captive fitting behind them.
- Mounting point: Confirm whether the plate attaches directly to bumper or bodywork holes, or through a holder or frame.
- Total stack thickness: Measure the plate, holder or frame, and any cover together. The screw must pass through all of them and still thread into the vehicle.
- Vehicle documentation: The owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s service information is the most reliable reference for your model.
Vehicle-specific guidance shows why this check matters. Tesla’s Model X service procedure for 2021 and later models warns that plate screw sizes may vary, and advises against overtightening. That is model-specific guidance, not a universal screw or torque specification, so it should not be applied to other cars.

Compare the screw types
Most buying decisions come down to the drive type, the material, and whether the kit includes what you need to remove the screws later. The table below compares the main drive options.
| Option | Fitted with | Removed with | What it adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard drive screw | Standard tools | Standard tools | Simple replacement; no removal barrier established |
| One-way anti-theft screw | Standard screwdriver (Victoria Police guide specifies a flat-bladed screwdriver for one-way screws) | Special tool supplied with the kit | Casual removal is harder without the matching tool |
| Special-tool security drive | Matching installation tool, where supplied | Matching removal tool only | Removal barrier depends on keeping the tool; security is not established as stronger than this against determined removal |
Material is the second axis. Stainless steel is a documented option: one plate bolt product specifies SUS304 stainless steel. That is a product fact, not a comparison. No comparative corrosion test across alloys or finishes was established, so you cannot rank stainless against other finishes on expected service life from the label alone.

Anti-theft screws: what they do and do not do
Victoria Police, the state police force in Victoria, Australia, states on its number plate theft guidance page, updated 24 August 2026: “Anti-theft screws are fitted with a standard screwdriver but can only be removed with a special tool.” The benefit is a removal barrier against opportunistic theft. It is not a guarantee.

Two points follow from this. First, the security depends on the matching tool staying in your possession. Store it where you will find it for future plate work, and keep a note of where it is. If it is lost, removing the plate may require replacing the fasteners or getting specialist help. Second, no fastener should be described as theft-proof. A determined person with the right tools can still remove the plate, so anti-theft screws are best treated as one deterrent alongside keeping the vehicle secured and parked where it is less exposed.

Stainless steel and corrosion
Stainless steel is a sensible priority if your vehicle is exposed to road salt, wet conditions or coastal air, because corrosion can make a plate difficult to remove and can weaken a fastener over time. The documented evidence supports stainless as an option, not as a proven longer-lasting one. Use the material as one criterion among fit, drive type and kit contents, and do not assume a particular lifespan.
How to install the screws
Victoria Police’s one-page DIY Number Plate Theft Prevention guide describes the following process. Work through the steps in order and confirm the fit before you tighten.

- Position the screws clear of the plate lettering and any vehicle lighting, so the plate remains readable and lights are not obstructed.
- For one-way screws, install with a flat-bladed screwdriver.
- Tighten until the plate is firm. Do not overtighten. The guide’s wording is “Tighten until firm, but do not over-tighten.”
- Store the removal tool with your spare parts or documents.
- Check regularly that the plate remains secure, and retighten gently if it has loosened.
A UK retailer’s direct-mount kit gives a similar caution: keep screws clear of lettering and do not overtighten, so the plate can still move slightly. Its dimensions and drilling directions apply only to that product. For example, one retail kit uses 6 mm × 18 mm fasteners. That is one kit’s size, not a universal one, and it should not be used as a reference for other vehicles.
