Choose a toolkit by matching its driver bits and opening tools to the repair manual for your exact Android phone—not by buying the kit with the most pieces. For occasional phone work, a precision driver handle and bits, plastic opening tools, an ESD-safe spudger, and tweezers are a practical starting point. Add suction, ESD gear, heat tools, or specialty bits only when the model-specific procedure calls for them.
Start with the phone model and the repair
Before buying tools, find the repair instructions for the exact phone model and the job you plan to do. A screen replacement, battery repair, and camera repair may require different bits, opening methods, and precautions. iFixit recommends checking the guide for each device to confirm which tools are needed: What toolkits do you recommend?
There is no universal Android screwdriver-bit set. For example, the Pixel 6 repair manual lists a Torx Plus 3IP bit as optional, while Samsung’s general disassembly guidance names a cross-head screwdriver. These are examples for particular documentation, not a compatibility chart for all Android phones. Check the exact manual and repair procedure before choosing a kit.

- Precision driver handle and bits: Use the exact bit types and sizes specified for the repair. A large assortment is not useful if it omits the required bit.
- Plastic opening tool or picks: These help separate edges and lift components without using a metal screwdriver as a pry tool. Follow the manual’s instructions for insertion depth and force.
- ESD-safe spudger: Use it around connectors and circuit boards. iFixit advises using an ESD-safe spudger for this work rather than a flathead screwdriver; see How to use the Essential Electronics Toolkit.
- Tweezers: They help handle small parts, but use them carefully around delicate components.
- Suction handle: Add one if the documented procedure calls for lifting a screen or glued panel.
Some repairs also call for heat, extra opening tools, or additional specialty items. Do not assume those are needed—or safe to use in a particular way—without checking the procedure for your model.

How to compare toolkit options

A precision electronics toolkit such as iFixit’s Essential Electronics Toolkit is an example of a kit category for basic phone work, not a guarantee that every required tool is included for every Android repair. Check current contents and confirm bit coverage against your manual before purchasing.
How to use opening tools safely
Use plastic opening tools or an ESD-safe spudger near boards and connectors, and follow the repair guide for how far to insert a pick and how much force to apply. A tool that fits an edge can still damage hidden cables or components if pushed too far. The opening method varies: some procedures call for suction or heat, so use those only as the model-specific instructions describe.

Samsung’s US guidance emphasizes proper tools, ESD precautions, and care around broken glass and internal components. It also warns against leaving loose screws inside the device. Safety steps can be specific to a model and repair. For example, the iFixit/Google Pixel 6 Pro earpiece speaker procedure instructs readers to discharge the battery below 25% before disassembly. For Pixel phones, Google says owners can access repair manuals and buy genuine parts through iFixit. Google also states that people who choose self-repair assume the associated risk. Start at Repair your own Pixel device and select the instructions for your model and repair.
