Start with household size to estimate refrigerator capacity, then adjust for how often you shop, how much you cook or entertain, and how much freezer space you use. Treat capacity charts as rough guides: measure your kitchen opening and delivery route, and check the specific model’s clearances and door movement before you buy.
Use household size as a starting point
GE Appliances offers these approximate capacity recommendations by household size:

| 5 or more people, or frequent hosts | 25+ cu. ft. |
These are GE’s recommendations, not a universal standard or a guarantee that a particular model will suit your kitchen. The ranges vary across manufacturer guidance: Whirlpool describes small-space refrigerators as around 11–18 cu. ft., a standard capacity as around 20 cu. ft., and large capacity as closer to 30 cu. ft. Neither guide establishes a single per-person formula. GE Appliances’ sizing guide and Whirlpool’s buying guide are useful starting points, but your storage habits should determine where you land.
Adjust for what you store
People count alone does not show how much refrigerator space you need. GE and Whirlpool both advise considering what your household brings home from grocery shopping; GE also points to meal preparation, bulk shopping, and frequent entertaining as reasons a small household may need more capacity. Minimalist eating may mean you can choose less. Think separately about fresh-food storage and freezer capacity, especially if you buy frozen food or prepare meals ahead.

- Shop in bulk or infrequently: You may need room for larger grocery loads.
- Cook often or prepare meals ahead: Account for ingredients, leftovers, and prepared dishes.
- Host regularly: Extra drinks and food can make a larger capacity useful even in a smaller household.
- Use little freezer space: A large total capacity may not be the best match if much of it is allocated to a freezer you rarely use.
Measure the opening before choosing a model
Measure the available opening’s height, width, and depth before comparing specific refrigerators. Include anything that reduces usable space, such as baseboards, trim, counters, overhead cabinets, or uneven floors. Outer dimensions alone do not tell you whether a model will fit with the installation space it requires.
Check the selected model’s installation instructions for ventilation clearance. GE’s guide advises at least 1 inch at the top and back and about 2 inches on the hinge side, but requirements vary by model. Follow the instructions for the refrigerator you are considering rather than assuming those figures apply to every unit.

Check doors, drawers, and the delivery route
Confirm that doors and drawers can open fully without hitting a wall, island, or cabinet. Look up the model’s open-door dimensions and hinge requirements, and consider how people will move past it when it is open. In a tight space near a wall, GE notes that a side-by-side or French-door model may need less clearance to open fully than some alternatives; verify the actual model’s movement rather than relying on the style name alone.

Measure the entire delivery path, including entry doors, hallways, and stairs. A refrigerator can fit its kitchen opening but still be difficult to bring into the room. If a doorway or turn is tight, confirm the delivery plan and whether any doors must be removed before the purchase is finalized.

Balance capacity against energy use
ENERGY STAR says that larger refrigerators generally use more energy and that the most energy-efficient models are typically 16–20 cu. ft. That range is program guidance, not a household-size formula. ENERGY STAR also says top-freezer models tend to use the least energy compared with bottom-freezer and side-by-side models; this is general guidance, not a guarantee about every individual refrigerator. - Does the capacity leave enough room for both fresh food and the freezer storage you actually use?
- Do the model’s height, width, depth, and required clearances fit the measured opening?
- Can doors and drawers open as needed in the kitchen layout?
- Can the refrigerator travel through the full delivery route?
- How does its model-level energy information compare with other plausible choices?
Consider configuration and extra features after these checks. A larger refrigerator is not automatically a better choice if it exceeds your storage needs, consumes more energy, or cannot function properly in the available space.
